Otherwise, the earth and everything on it would have been scorched to a cinder by a wayward sun.

Phaethon entered this mess by begging Helios, his estranged father from the gods, to prove to him that he really was Phaethon's son. He wanted to know if he really had Helios' blood in his veins. In order to prove he had the right stuff, Phaethon wanted to drive Helios' sun chariot. Helios begged Phaethon not to take on such an overwhelming challenge that even Zeus could not perform. But in the end he stepped out of the way and let his son Phaethon drive the chariot. As Phaethon lost control of the strong horses, the sun began to rock the cosmos, and then it began to scorch the earth. The winged seasons and times informed Zeus of the unfolding calamity. Zeus intervened, unleashing his might in the form of lightning bolts to stop Phaethon. Phaethon fell from his high-flying chariot and was killed from the fall. His death was the nail in the coffin that Phaethon was no Helios.

Phaethon had many powerful friends and supporters who mourned his termination.

From a photographer's point of view, look at how the canvas is separated from an invisible diagonal line that sorts dark from light. A lighted circle in the middle directs the eye to travel around the figures of the canvas for the story.

Hmm, this canvas and the story begins in the middle, around a horse's ass. That's funny, Rubens!

Title: The Fall of Phaeton, c. 1604/1605

Artist: Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640)

Medium: Oil on canvas

Venue: National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC

There is always room for fun, breath and laughter in Open Space (OST), 2013 at the ICF Michigan statewide conference (professional coaching organization. I'm standing by the projector near the middle of this photo.

The statewide organization asked me to coordinate Coach Cafe' Ann Arbor in 2011. I was also on the planning team (and resident techie) for the ICF Michigan Annual Forum 2013. (Int'l Coaching Federation, for which I'm a member.)

Leading a session with the West Michigan Forum with professional coaches. It was great to see how much happened in 10 minutes with Open Space Technology.

I facilitated another Open Space Technology session with the statewide organization, ICF Michigan, at the 2013 Annual Forum

Here's a quote from one of the attendees:

"I had the opportunity to participate in an Open Space ...where the theme was 'use of social media as a marketing tool'.

Very quickly, the group in attendance identified about 6-8 related topics and then off we went with the freedom to walk around and join in on any group conversation we wanted to.

In one corner of the room was a group huddled around and buzzing about Twitter while another was sitting on the floor talking about blogs.

I was interested in learning about WordPress at the time so I gravitated to a group discussing its use. A long time coaching colleague was also in the group and I learned she had just converted her website to WordPress. She generously offered to help me out which resulted in a couple of very insightful phone calls in the weeks after the meeting.

I really don't think I would have made this connection, and gained the insight I did, if not for the environment Open Space facilitates."

Our Ann Arbor LinkedIn group is open to coaches who'd like to participate in Coach Cafe' in the SE Michigan area. Search for "Coach Cafe' Ann Arbor" and, if you are practicing coach, ask to join. Also see our website: Coachcafeannarbor.weebly.com/

A video explaining profession coaching (by those external to your immediate organization, is there. There is also a link to an article on how to select a coach.

Coaching by those external to your organization is recommended, as internal coaches and managers, while useful in providing support/perspective, may have PAAR, that is power, authority, accountability & responsibility for your work, and therefore may not be fully objective or fully able to support what is best for your development.

I'm always amazed and affirmed at how to Open Space Technology process allows for good to great discussion about topics in tension, this one being: How to deal with problematic performance appraisals.

What a great group of open-minded HR people at MISHRM in Grand Rapids, MI!

See the attached flipcharts for discussion notes. I will respond to generated questions, creating a FAQ, and will be sharing resources, including references from BetaCodex.org, the 2012 book, Beyond Performance Management, by Jeremy Hope and Steve Player

This group understood the flow of Open Space (Technology) immediately and plunged right into the topic of the session of raising questions and discussing how to move beyond industrial age and 70's behaviorist thinking to transition to the modern 21st century of achievement and performance.

Context is here: A History of Performance Appraisals: Letting Go to Power New Culture

Description:

This presentation provides a context for performance appraisals, ratings and reviews as very old ideas compared to organizational leadership pioneers and what's next. Performance management, defined in the 1970s, is rooted in scientific management. It is possible to acknowledge history, realize its impact on our business systems, and let go to embrace new strategies.
