Pictures from the Vanarama National League North clash at Broadhurst Park between FC United of Manchester and Darlington.
The game finished in a hard fought 3-2 victory for Darlo. who were 2-0 up inside 27 minutes.
Hardy opended the scoring for the visitors latching onto a superb ball from Thompson before slipping the ball past the advancing keeper.
Quakers went two-up on 27 minutes but it should have been more as thye spurned a host of chnaces. Liam Marrs’ free-kick was headed down by Mark Beck for Hardy to lay off in turn for Thompson to fire across Frith.
Against the run of play United pulled a goal back on 42 minutes when Jason Gilchrist spotted Jameson off his line, and chipped the ball over the keeper followed by an equaliser on 66 minutes from Thomson.
A draw looked on the cards however with 10 minutes left subsititute Cartman cleverly found Purewal with an overhead kick for his fellow sub to charge up the left. His ball to the far post was blocked, but it came back out to Cartman, who struck a low shot that took a deflection and beat the keeper to make it 3-2. Darlo were able to weather a late storm to secure all 3 points!

A photo of a gorgeous Malachite butterfly, taken in the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo way back on 26 September 2011. This comparatively new building was under water after the severe Flood of the Century, that started just over two weeks ago. Not sure when it's likely to be reopened. At the very end of July, the Zoo will be opening just the north part of the Zoo, which is built on the edge of the river. The main part of the Zoo is built on an island in the middle of the Bow River, and has suffered tremendous damage, and so will take much longer to get ready to open for visitors.
"The Calgary Zoo is laying off nearly 300 people in the wake of the flooding that caused $50 million in damage to the non-profit." From CBC News.
One happy thing, though, is that, after being rescued from the flood, a Meerkat at the Zoo gave birth to five babies : )

You are not on 5th Avenue walking your dog, rushing before having to go back to the office, where there might be some new lay-offs in the most stressful week ever...
Relax... you are still on your sunbed in the Caribbean, you just closed your eyes, probably fell asleep for a second... your frozen daiquirí is coming up.
Dreaming is easy. And it's free.

2/25/08 – A couple more TV shows mentions, then I’ll lay off the TV pics for awhile (maybe…definitely excludes “Lost”).
Have my Monday night line up bookmarked:
Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles - Even though I missed the 1st 2 episodes, and anywhere from 5 – 30 minutes (work) of each episode thereafter, I am grooving on this show. It is more in the vein of the original Terminator movie…if you’re expecting the over-the-top action feel of the sequels you’re going to be sorely disappointed. This series is touching upon a lot of interesting themes. One of my favorites is when they ran into a terminator who’s mission didn’t involve the assassination of John, but the gathering and protection of supplies…of course Skynet would set itself up for post-Judgment Day. My favorite episode so far is where Derek Reese (Kyle’s brother…aka: John Conner’s father from the original Terminator) is remembering the events leading up to him being sent back to the present. While a prisoner, he meets one of the creators of Skynet. This scientist said they lost control of Skynet because it was afraid (oh, and Skynet originally started as an AI chess computer). Then there’s Cameron, the female Terminator sent back to protect John. With the season finale next Monday, hopefully we’ll find out if Cameron is going bad or, if not, what her agenda is.
&
Medium - Probably the best written show on TV right now. The writers do a great job in melding the crime-of-the-week story and Allison’s family life. The actors & actresses are often put through the ringer on this show, especially during the chaotic breakfast scenes. The dream sequences are also unique and creatively brilliant (tonight it was a silent movie). I am happy to see NBC has finally moved it back to Monday’s. Hopefully in the fall we can get the Chuck, Heroes, Medium line up…and if Fox doesn’t cancel Sarah Conner Chronicles (which they probably will because they’re Fox and they like to cancel they’re really good SF shows…like Firefly & Wonderfalls…before they build an audience), I’ll be getting myself a DVR by September.
Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson NJ was built during the Great Depression with grants from the federal government. A large portion of the labor came from layed off mill workers in Paterson NJ.
That federal investment in a construction project gave Paterson a 10,000 seat stadium that was used through the mid-1990s. Now in need a major renovations voters approved a ballot measure in 2009 to restore this historic structure.

ok, so i'm no runner (by any means), but i just signed up to run a 5k at this years race for the cure. Breast cancer hits close to home for me, as my mother is a breast cancer survivor. Both of my grandmothers also had breast cancer (my dad's mom will be 96 this year!). My mom's mom had a mastectomy before I was born, and survived another 15 or so years cancer-free before the cancer came back. She fought a tough fight for several years, and passed away a few days before I graduated high school.
I'll be running in honor of my mom and grandma roeser, and in memory of my grandma fec. Having breast cancer run in my family as it does means my sisters and I need to be extra careful. I'd like to raise money and do whatever I can to make sure that when I have a daughter, she doesn't need to worry about it.
So I have two months to get in respectable enough shape to run a 5k without completely humiliating myself. (This might mean I need to lay off the iced vanilla coffees for a while). I don't plan on finishing first, I just want to finish. My goal is to raise $150. If you would like to support me in the race, you can donate online here. I'll be posting updates on my progress on my blog, so stay tuned...

ROMA ARCHEOLOGIA e BENI CULTURALI: Tens of thousands march in Rome against unemployment, REUTERS NEW, USA (22/06/2013).
ROME (Reuters) - Thousands of workers and unemployed people marched in Rome on Saturday to protest against record unemployment and call on Enrico Letta's two-month-old government to deliver more than empty rhetoric on the issue.
The rally, organized by the country's three largest union confederations, CGIL, CISL and UIL, was the first major protest since Letta's broad, left-right coalition took office following an inconclusive election in February.
Italian unemployment hit 12 percent in April, the highest level on record, and joblessness among people under 24 is at an all-time high above 40 percent.
Union chiefs, speaking before a flag-waving crowd estimated at more than 100,000 by the organizers, criticized Letta for what they called a lack of action on an urgent problem.
"We can't accept these continuous promises that aren't translated into decisions that give a change of direction," said Susanna Camusso, leader of the country's largest union CGIL.
Luigi Angeletti, head of the UIL, said the country could not afford the piecemeal approach to policy adopted so far, especially when the ruling coalition is so fragile.
"In a country where the main concern is betting on how long the government will last, the message is that there is no more time for promises and announcements," he said in Piazza San Giovanni, the traditional venue of left-wing protests.
Letta's cabinet is due to unveil a package aimed at tackling youth unemployment next week, but Angeletti said the measures being mooted, such as tax breaks for firms hiring young people, were "useless".
Italy's economy has contracted in every quarter since mid-2011 - its longest post-war recession - and companies are steadily shedding staff.
The unionists called on the government to intervene to prevent plans by white goods maker Indesit to lay off 1,400 workers in one of the most recent labor disputes.
"Indesit isn't in crisis, it just wants to use its profits to make investments in Turkey and Poland," Camusso said.
One marcher, Lorenzo Giuseppe, told Reuters he had turned out "to send a message to the government that jobs have to be the top issue on the agenda. If we have work we can move ahead."
Millions of Italians are so convinced they have no chance of finding work that they have given up looking altogether, meaning official figures severely understate the number of unemployed, according to national statistics office ISTAT.

Ship fitters use wooden templates to create the steel plates that form the hull and bulkheads of the ship. On the left side of the painting, men with hammers are striking a punch to outline with prick marks the shape to which the metal will be cut. Once all the plates are cut, each is labeled with information to identify its exact position on the finished vessel.
Yesterday was the trial of three union leaders charged with instigating an attack on a German consular official during a German - Greek conference on local authority governance. The trial was once again postponed till 28th November after key prosecution witnesses failed to turn up.
The charges are widely seen by Greek trade unions and political activist as an attempt to intimidate local authority employees who have have been waging a campaign of resistance against the first in a series of planned lay offs in town and county councils across Greece. The cuts in jobs and salaries are being demanded by the country's creditors in return for the release of the next tranche of bailout funds.
However, whether Athens will be able to impose its will on recalcitrant public sector workers is moot as just 25 of the Greece's 340 councils have submitted the names of employees to the laid off. In addition over 200 town and county council halls are currently under occupation.

You may (or may not) have noticed I havn't been very active lately on flickr. This is not to do with me losing interest at all but more to do with me having a rather larger project on than usual. For the last five months or so I have been busy at work in the shed building completely from the ground up a 1926 Morris Cowley. I've had all the parts for ages, just rusting away in the woolshed and early this year I decided I might as well do something with them. The vehicle used to be (many moons ago) the butchers van for a town near where I live but was disassembled decades ago for reasons unknown. I've mannaged to find out that the last time the motor ran was a good 60 years ago at least and even then it was used to power a saw bench. The restoration should hopefully take a year and a bit from now to complete at a push but since I'm on temporary lay-off from work I should be able to get quite a bit done. This is not a goodbye by any means, more of a grey age than a dark age. I'm more than happy to put up the odd photo of my progress if anyone is interested. So just so you know, I am still alive, just busy with a different, much bigger project than usual.
Thanks for your time,
Nicholas Carter
People like to pick on Detroit, which I consider my hometown even though I grew up in the suburbs (have YOU ever heard of Berkley, Royal Oak, or Birmingham? I didn't think so). It irks me to no end to hear people slamming my city; usually a) they've never been to Detroit, and if they have, they've not spent much time there, or at least not enough; b) oftentimes their own hometown has problems of its own that are all too obvious to everyone, and they really need to stop calling the kettle...well, you know; c) they often do this for the sole purpose of getting a Detroiter's ire up or being petty, and this sort of intentional goading is just plain childish.
Trust me, the sensible folks know there are problems and what they are.
Michiganders and Detroiters are proud of our state and city. Though Detroit's once-gleaming grandeur is faded, decaying in places, and worn thin, it's hard for a native to drive downtown and look at those stunning buildings (the ones that led to Detroit being called "The Art Deco Capital of the World") and not be proud of what she was and, under a better hand, could be. We look at fellow Detroiters who are working hard—and there are some, believe me—still actually working despite the name-calling, the odds, the snide remarks and a poor economy, and we're proud of each other, and the city and her people become more deeply entrenched within our hearts during every encounter.
You might feel close to the same about your city, but I'm not sure the intensity level is the same. In fact...I kind of doubt it is. Detroit has become personal to her people. The constant attacks and slurs aimed at Detroit, once the nation's heartbeat, the old Arsenal of Democracy, one whose beauty we can still see, whose future we have faith will be bright again one day, have made it only dearer to us, more beloved.
Detroit has gone from being Secretariat to a $2500 claimer, but one that has good bones and just needs better training and care. The stupid comments too many make about Detroit cut to the quick because over the years, our hearts and the city have somehow become soldered together; it's love somehow strengthened by our sadness.
So don't rip on Detroit. If you're not from here, we don't mind genuinely helpful ideas or suggestions, but keep your bitterness, your insults, and your snotty remarks to yourself. I don't come to your city—or worse, sit in a faraway town—and call your town names (unless you're playing my Red Wings, but that is another matter entirely!), so don't do it to mine. It's personal.
Not sure why I'm on a tear, but it's probably that we just spent five days in Michigan, in Detroit, and I love it so much despite the terrible sadness I feel when I'm in some of the worst neighborhoods, watching and talking to the people. It hurts seeing what has happened—it physically hurts. My heart breaks. So seriously, lay off Detroit. Stop kicking folks who are down and bite your tongue or lend a hand.

Bell media, is a proud Canadian Company ? It's Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas Nevada USA. Prior to the big game CTV has been flooding North American airways with ads to promote their full coverage of the upcoming American Superbowl and they will then broadcast 10 straight hours of uninterrupted prime time live T.V. coverage of this prime American sporting event on Superbowl Sunday 2024 ? However, on the other hand, back home in their home country of Canada, they don't broadcast anything at all, nothing (zero) blanco, zilch, silencio, not even 1 minute of CTV coverage of their own 2024 Canadian Grey Cup game for their fellow Canadians to enjoy ? www.flickr.com/photos/74039487@N02/53523500175/in/datepos...
Feb 2024 - Halifax Nova Scotia,
Bell media and CTV have deafened and blindfolded many East Coast residents after eliminating many critical hours of local and community news programming in the Atlantic region ?
Recent Bell Canada Corporate decisions have now left many Maritimers in a vulnerable position ? East Coast Provinces appear to be the target of severe local live Newstime cancellations and these cut-backs have left many Maritimers without their daily Noon news hour updates that are broadcast everyday all week long ? ATV viewers will now be forced to tune into the other station (CBC) where CBC tends to run mostly world international news along with their select choice of the National News, along with lengthy live news conferences that are put on by the PM and other liberal party members ?
Aside from terminating the popular weekday ATV Noon hour news show, CTV has also downsized in half the very popular and iconic , 'ATV live at five' 5 P.M. local community news program, (prompting long time popular host Jason Baxter to seek early retirement) ? Adding to the devistating loss of this much needed news reporting that is traditionally broadcast every week, Bell will also now terminate all weekend Saturday and Sunday local news reporting currently running on ATV ? The cancellation and elimination of so much allotted local news airtime that is normally given to Atlantic Canadians surely threatens the safety and security of residents especially now that there will be a 24 hour local news blackout for 2 full days each and every weekend and even for as much as 3 consecutive days every holiday long weekend ? And so it seems that arch rival CBC has taken over prime time live local news reporting in the Maritimes and Bell Canada is blaming the Liberal Government's new Bill C-18 for them having to slash so many prime time hours of local and Provincial news coverage in the Maritimes ?

Is this a CBC Stanley Cup cruel joke ? June 2nd, 2024 Edmonton ? Fans are upset after CBC had broadcast the first 5 games of the Men's NHL Dallas vs Oilers series, and then, without warning and for no logical reason, CBC blacked out the critical and most important climactic final game that saw Edmonton win and gain entry into the Stanley Cup finals ? It remains unclear why CBC would do this ? Was it arrogance, or was it to be mean spirited, or was it a gender bias issue due to this being Men's pro hockey, or was it maybe a lesson given out to remind Canadians just who is running this Countries main media and who controls the programming ? v=iW0yzPhwC4s" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW0yzPhwC4s

the fans are confused ? After Connor McDavid and other NHL Superstar heroes played starring roles in glamorous new betMGM ads to promote gambling on their websites, numerous complaints were filed. One of three shots with a purpose. There and back VERY quickly - more interested in numbers of people and not being able to identify individuals than originality, art, or creativity. (You can get in a lot of trouble putting pictures of people online, or publishing their image without permission,) A slightly blurry 'focus' is my resolution for that). I simply wanted to capture the numbers of people, the lack of distancing, and whether or not people were wearing masks. Granted it's somewhat difficult to verify mask wearers as half the people are walking away with their back to the camera, but you can nonetheless see there are people who aren't wearing a mask.
Theme: Despite a major, very SERIOUS lockdown, people are continuing to gather and crowd. We are all supposed to be staying home, distancing, and are restricted to only being around the immediate people we live with. But the opposite is what is happening. How the city can allow what these three pictures prove is beyond me when California is running out of Covid beds, and emergency personnel, nurses, etc. We are at the point of having to bring in nurses from overseas - yet this kind of crowding is openly going on and will continue. So will the refusal to wear masks.
Same kind of thing is happening on Muni, our local transit system. Smaller buses are put on the busiest line carrying the most people, FORCING crowding. Passengers are allowed to close windows opened for ventilation, and to lower seats locked upright to force distancing. Some drivers even allow passengers to board without masks. And few passengers pay any fare at all - on a system that supposedly is totally broke, cutting bus routes, and laying off drivers due to lack of budget. Totally mixed messages.
Too many are Ignoring the science and facts, which puts everyone at risk. More proof of how America has rapidly gone down hill and lost integrity, conscience, common sense, and long-held values that used to define us. Very short-sighted and selfish.
