Some coal fields in Hwange, Zimbabwe, are being exploited by the Chinese. We drove to two, picked at random. The coal dust pollution was awful, though we did see one water truck spraying a lorry track. Every Zimbabwean who’s mentioned the Chinese presence has been negative, saying they import Chinese (“criminals worked as slaves”) labour and their food, and the mines profit no one but the Chinese. However the workers we saw were Zimbabwean dressed in good PPE and using well maintained machinery. An English expat was even more damning telling how slag heaps are encroaching on game parks (but I always take expat talk with a pinch of salt). It is also said that the Chinese, having taken over gold exploitation, do so with no regard for the environment bulldozing up anything, including river beds, to extract gold. Another bad feeling towards the Chinese is that they flood the market with shoddy goods. For instance a Zimbabwe company used to buy wire to produce fencing, but now the Chinese import fencing at less cost than the cost of wire. So the company folded up its fence making activities, laying off 90 people. It’s thought that each Zimbabwe employee supports about 12 people, so the closure of that facility caused widespread hardship. It is said many Chinese imports are sub-standard. Possibly inspections by Veritas, about to start, so it’s hoped, will put a stop to this.

Alcatraz. San Francisco, California. April/2018

The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary or United States Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island (often just referred to as Alcatraz or the Rock) was a maximum high-security federal prison on Alcatraz Island, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) off the coast of San Francisco, California, which operated from August 11, 1934, until March 21, 1963.

The main prison building was built in 1910–1912 during its time as a United States Army military prison; Alcatraz had been the site of a citadel since the 1860s. The United States Disciplinary Barracks, Pacific Branch on Alcatraz was acquired by the United States Department of Justice on October 12, 1933, and the island became a prison of the Federal Bureau of Prisons in August 1934 after the buildings were modernized to meet the requirements of a top-notch security prison. Given this high security and the location of Alcatraz in the cold waters and strong currents of San Francisco Bay, the prison operators believed Alcatraz to be escape-proof and America's strongest prison.

Alcatraz was designed to hold prisoners who continuously caused trouble at other federal prisons. One of the world's most notorious and best known prisons over the years, Alcatraz housed some 1,576 of America's most ruthless criminals including Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud(the "Birdman of Alcatraz"), George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Bumpy Johnson, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Mickey Cohen, Arthur R. "Doc" Barker, Whitey Bulger, and Alvin "Creepy" Karpis (who served more time at Alcatraz than any other inmate). It also provided housing for the Bureau of Prisons' staff and their families. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts during the 29 years of the prison's existence, the most notable of which were the violent escape attempt of May 1946 known as the "Battle of Alcatraz", and the arguably successful "Escape from Alcatraz" by Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin in June 1962 in one of the most intricate escapes ever devised. Faced with high maintenance costs and a poor reputation, Alcatraz closed on March 21, 1963.

The three-story cellhouse included the main four blocks of the jail, A-block, B-block, C-block, and D-block, the warden's office, visitation room, the library, and the barber shop. The prison cells typically measured 9 feet (2.7 m) by 5 feet (1.5 m) and 7 feet (2.1 m) high. The cells were primitive and lacked privacy, with a bed, a desk and a washbasin and toilet on the back wall, with few furnishings except a blanket. African-Americans were segregated from the rest in cell designation due to racial abuse being prevalent. D-Block housed the worst inmates and five cells at the end of it were designated as "The Hole", where badly behaving prisoners would be sent for periods of punishment, often brutally so. The dining hall and kitchen lay off the main building in an extended part where both prisoners and staff would eat three meals a day together. The Alcatraz Hospital was above the dining hall.

Corridors of the prison were named after major American streets such as Broadway and Michigan Avenue. Working at the prison was considered a privilege for inmates and many of the better inmates were employed in the Model Industries Building and New Industries Building during the day, actively involved in providing for the military in jobs such as sewing and woodwork and performing various maintenance and laundry chores.

Today the penitentiary is a public museum and one of San Francisco's major tourist attractions, attracting some 1.5 million visitors annually. The former prison is now operated by the National Park Service's Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the badly eroded buildings of the former prison have been subject to restoration works in recent times and maintained

Cloudy and windy, but the sun had just started to push through.

In these pictures you have both old norwegian history (church) from Viking age, and offshore industry which is Norways main export. Unfortunally these vessels seen in these photos is all layed up and awaiting new assignement.

This southbound Union Pacific home signal at CPI 074-Ben on their Villa Grove sub will no longer govern direction southward on track 2 as it lays off to the side of the track waiting to be transported to a torch on June 21st, 2016. I don't know exactly when it was placed here in service, but my guess was during the MoPac era sometime in the 1970's? I wanted to steal it but I couldn't budge it.....

I don't know what it is...but...I have been so annoyed with stupid people/decisions the last couple of days. I know that might sound a bit judgmental, but seriously, hear me out here. :)

Do you really think A-Rod that we believe that you thought you were only taking an over the counter substance? If it was over the counter, why didn't you just walk into the 1000's of drug stores we have here and buy it. Why did you have to get it from your cousin out of the country?

It's obvious that the Dutch were angry when Fokker's majority owner Daimler-Benz withdrew financial support for Fokker NV, leading to its collapse. It was the biggest mass lay-off in Dutch corporate history.

I love newspaper and often buy a local newspaper when I travel. This 1996 pull-out section of The Netherlander, however, came to me from my brother. He was in Rotterdam on a conference when Dutch plane-maker Fokker NV collapsed.

Very kindly, he brought me this pull-out special of The Netherlander when he came back to Toronto. The Netherlander is an English-language business weekly of Het Financieele Dagblad, a Dutch business daily.

'Animals' is about economies collapsing under the weight of stock market savagery, of industries desperate to "advertise, franchise… kill the competition," and of the greed of bankers who Matt claims should "kill [themselves]." Matt says: "This song is conjuring up the rawest form of that feeling of 'look what humans are capable of doing, it's shocking.'"

I liked the way the stage was set up with the video on the pyramid and the stocks rolling below.

Many decades ago, Dead Horse Bay was a little finger of water protruding into Barren Island, the southernmost of a group of marshy islands that once lay off the coast of Brooklyn at the mouth of Jamaica Bay. Barren Island was infamous for the more than two dozen malodorous industrial enterprises that called it home over the years. According to the NY Times:

From the 1850's until the 1930's, the carcasses of dead horses and other animals from New York City streets were used to manufacture glue, fertilizer and other products at the site. The chopped-up, boiled bones were later dumped into the water. . . .

In the 1860's, fish oil plants were established along Dead Horse Bay. The oil was used to tan leather and mix paints and the scraps were used to make fertilizer. When the factories faded in the 1890's, the New York Sanitary Utilization Company was established to transform city garbage into grease, soap and fertilizer. The processing and horse-rendering industries, at their peak, supported a population of 1,500. Barren Island, however, had no public water, sewage system or fire department, and nearby communities complained endlessly about the horrendous stench of its factories.

The city stopped sending garbage to Barren Island in 1919. And as the automobile became more popular, "the number of horse carcasses in Dead Horse Bay dwindled . . . and by the 1920's only one rendering plant remained."

In the late 1920s, to create a site for Floyd Bennett Field, the city's first municipal airport, Barren Island and its neighbors were transformed into a peninsula, connected to each other and the Brooklyn mainland (a.k.a. Long Island) with millions of cubic yards of sand pumped up from Jamaica Bay. The airport opened in 1931, and the final rendering plant on what had been Barren Island closed around the same time.

According to Robin Nagle, the anthropologist-in-residence at the Department of Sanitation, the bottles and other items lying on the beach of Dead Horse Bay (the name has lived on even as the geography has been radically altered over the years) were dumped there in 1953:

All this stuff got here when Robert Moses was expanding the landfilling of garbage around the city, which was especially urgent after the United States Supreme Court told New York it could no longer dump garbage at sea, which we had been doing for centuries. That Supreme Court order took effect in 1934. From that point forward, we started building landfills and incinerators all over the city. Everything we see here was placed here sometime between early February and mid-March of 1953, and it's all from somewhere in Brooklyn — I'm not exactly sure where yet, but I'm working on that — and these are homes, the debris from homes that were razed to make way for various forms of urban renewal and highway construction.

Howard Warren, who has been visiting the shoreline of Dead Horse Bay (now part of Gateway National Recreation Area) since 1987, says he didn't start seeing debris emerging on the beach until 1991, but now more and more of the old landfill is being uncovered every day.

You can read a little about life on Barren Island here, and see some old photos of the place here. A lengthy 1899 Brooklyn Daily Eagle article about the island (part 1, part 2) offers an enthusiastic report on the garbage-processing and animal-rendering plants, from which I have excerpted the following:

Not many of the millions of persons who make up the throngs on New York's thoroughfares know that there is gold in the garbage they see scattered over the streets and lying in the gutters. Fewer still know the method by which the gold is extracted. To the average member of the great public the banana peels, watermelon rinds, dirty rags, tin cans, rotted fruits and decaying vegetables are simply parts of a great nuisance. They are of no value and only of importance because they are an offense to both the senses of sight and smell and a menace to the public health. . . .

But this same garbage is worth $2,000,000 a year. That is very nearly the exact sum annually realized from the filthy stuff after it has passed through the plant of the New York Utilization Company, which disposes of all the garbage of the City of New York. Two big twin factories on the extreme eastern end of Barren Island convert the kitchen refuse and vegetable matter into commercial commodities and two other plants near by, but under a different management, take the putrid flesh of all the animals that die in the city and make it into some of the most valuable articles of daily use.

High priced commodities for the market are manufactured from the mass of reeking filth that is daily gathered from the streets and from the back yards of the New York residents. Costly toilet soap that is advertised as being made from purely vegetable oils is manufactured from this garbage. The finest of lubricating oils on the market are made from the carcasses of the dead animals. Candles that burn in golden candlesticks are molded from grease that is pressed out of the city's refuse. Fresh vegetables on the table to-day were given their flavor and nutritious qualities by fertilizers manufactured from the refuse of vegetables that were on the table a year ago. The dirty rags picked up with the street garbage and gathered with the kitchen slops are sold again from the stationery stores as white paper and discarded tin cans are melted to be used in a part of the construction of the finest mansions in the city.

Happy New Year's Eve!!!

This was the prerequisite 365 jumping on the bed shot. I never really got it right because I had to try and time it with the self timer. But it was fun trying :O)

This was while we were getting dressed for the night. I never got a full body shot of me or Virginia but suffice it to say we were looking va va va VOOM!

Our night was full of adventure including....

1. Walking more than 1.5 miles and 1.5 hours in 4" platform heels (me) and stillettos (Virginia) because the lobby person said there was no transport to the club we wanted. Only to find taxis running straight to the door when we got there.

2. Getting stuck in a zombie like crowd on the strip because it was so crowded

3. Almost not getting into the club that we paid $75.00 for tickets

4. Not getting in said club until 11:45pm due to staff disorganization

5. Expecting fireworks only to look up and see none. Later it was rumored that the casinos didn't feel it was prudent to spend that much money on fireworks when they were laying off people

6. Resting my bruised feet across from Jenna Jameson, a pregnant porn star (so I am told)

7. Standing in line for a taxi at 2:30pm only to take a bus that got us CLOSE but not to our hotel

8. Trying to have some dignity while hobbling back the short distance to the hotel. I swear I thought I was crippled.

9. Soaking feet in bathtub before bed.

Definitely a New Year to remember!

"Hey Annette, why don't you lay off the cakes?... You fat bitch!"

While the Obama White House celebrated the US Supreme Court decision in favor of its health care bill, several hundred people gathered in front of Downstate public hospital in Brooklyn to protest plans to lay off over 1000 doctors and health care workers or close the hospital entirely. The hospital, serves a predominately low income Black, Latino and Caribbean neighborhood and is one of thousands of hospitals in minority communities closed or downsized in recent years. last year Downstate treated nearly half a million patients. It was a reminder that the gap between the reality and the political hype surrounding access to health care for low income communities is wide - and getting wider

Brandon Floyd Mason, with his lady Teresa, and her Service Pooch 'Fonzie'.

A former co-worker of mine, at Warner Brothers (1997 - 2005), he was made redundant along with I and 37 other folks in January 2005.

He's dead now. A victim of Great Hostility, ignorance, and unjustified hatred.

Migrating from L.A. to Colorado, he found it difficult to keep their heads above water after the lay-off..and in 2012, he and Teresa ended up sleeping rough..

Homeless.

He was doing his damndest to work (3 jobs! No rest, damn little sleep..) and get both he and Teresa re-situated, re-established, and have all worked out.

On 4 April, 2017, in a neighbourhood called East Colfax, in front of a 7-11 store, late at night..he was attacked by person...or persons...unknown...and gravely wounded.

On life-support and in a coma.. his Mum opted to have him removed from life-support on 14 May, 2017.

He was all of 34 years old.

The killer(s) were never caught.

Do you know the name Brandon Floyd Mason?

No.

Did you hear anything in the news about his murder?

No.

And..you never will..

The local news media didn't give a Tinker's Damn because he was one of *THOSE* people!!

If it were a Fortune 50 Executive who sits in his Ivory Tower .. countin' his eight goddamn bills a year that this happened to......CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, CNN, SKY, ITN, CBC, RTL, BBC, *ad infinitum* WOULD...................................................have covered this 24/7!

BUT................................because he was homeless, HE DIDN'T COUNT!

This Expatriate Chicagoan was notified of this by one of my former Warner Brothers m8's on 30 May, 2017.

There shall be a memorial remembering him back in The States on 14 June, 2017 (Wednesday)..

And I shall be there..........................

I am preparing for my flight .. which shall be this coming Sunday, 11 June, 2017..

There are many, many folk out there...who have suffered a similar fate..

And although there ARE **LOTS** of people who HAVE suffered severe setbacks...they HAVE overcome them and live quite happily, healthily...and, most of all, secure and safe.

But there are **SO MANY** others....whose lives are...in the balance. Who live precariously. As many homeless are endangered by -- not only people more fortunate, who target the less-than-fortunate as scapegoats ; using the homeless as objects of their wrath to justify and compensate for their own shortcomings -- but also oft times by fellow homeless.. Making the terminology "homeless community" a 99 44/100% misnomer..

For many formerly 'sleeping rough/homeless' folk in the world, The Battle Is Over.....but for many others, They Are Still At War!

No Kidding. These are real Generals and Senior NCOs wearing uniforms that are under serious consideration by U.S. Air Force leaders managers for adoption.

The USAF is laying off hard working war fighters for budget reasons, but they have enough crack-smoking Generals to put on this horrible fashion show.

I've been in the Air Force one way or the other since 1970. Every new class of generals almost without fail changes the uniforms. Every change is always a pathetic imitation of some other service. We've had Army, Navy, Marine and U.S. Airways imitations. Now add Star Fleet to the list of services that can mock us for being their groupies.

This just makes me sick.

Jose Mourinho admitted he felt emotional to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic return from his career-threatening knee ligament operation in Manchester United’s impressive 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.

Paul Pogba, coming back from a 12-match lay-off of his own with a hamstring problem,...

Movietone news film: Ordeal of The Seafarer

See Boost1966's collection of images

The stranding of the S.A. Seafarer on Friday 1st July 1966, is all but forgotten, except by the affected few, but it has been referred to as “a tragic milestone” in South African maritime history. It would have been worse but for a handful of S.A.A.F. men flying Alouette helicopters who battled against strong winds to lift off the passengers and crew of the stricken vessel.

Originally named Clan Shaw, then Steenbok and finally S.A. Seafarer, the ship was owned by the Springbok Shipping Co when she arrived off her home port of Cape Town on the evening of June 30, 1966. On board were a crew of 63 and 12 passengers, including a six-month-old baby. The cargo amounted to 7,800 tons and included thousands of bottles of whisky, over 300 different-titled magazines and a lethal consignment of tetraethyl lead.

The weather was bad, the sea rough with a heavy swell running, and there was intermittent rain and a north westerly wind blowing at 30 knots. Port Captain Motson, of Cape Town, decided it would be safer to handle the ship by day and told the master, 32-year-old, Captain James Branch, to remain clear of the harbour and bay until morning.

When Capt. Branch received the message the S.A. Seafarer was three to four miles north-west of Robben Island. For about an hour the engines were stopped and the vessel drifted but at approximately 20:30 the master went to the bridge and set a course of 230° with an option to steer 240° if it was found the ship rode more comfortably. At 22:00 Capt. Branch reviewed the situation and again at midnight he returned to the bridge. By this time the weather had improved and the wind speed was down to 10 knots, with visibility considerably improved. The lighthouses at Green Point, Milnerton and Robben Island were all visible.

Although the Port Captain had intended his message to be an instruction, Capt. Branch regarded it as advisory and decided to enter Table Bay and proceed to an anchorage. The task seemed simple enough and as the ship was equipped with gyro compass, magnetic compass, echo sounding apparatus, direction finder, radar and Decca Navigator, he did not foresee any difficulty. Undoubtedly, there were certain risks involved but Capt. Branch did not deem them dangerous. What he did not know was that a series of small errors had already begun to place the ship in jeopardy.

The third officer had found that he could not hold the ship on a course of 230°/240° with the ship travelling dead slow and he had altered course to 260°, but he made no mention of the alteration to the master and neither did he inform the second officer when the latter took over the watch at midnight. The third officer also failed to fix the ship’s position satisfactorily before handing over. When Capt. Branch returned to the bridge at midnight he, without checking the ship’s position, rang down for “Full ahead” and turned the vessel to leeward, prior to setting a course into Table Bay. The ship’s head was steadied on a course for Milnerton Light but at this stage Green Point and Milnerton lights were close together and the quarter master could identify neither by its flash.

On assuming watch at midnight the second officer obtained a position by taking two bearings but failed to fix his position by taking a third bearing on Robben Island light. Nor did he lay off, on the chart, the course set by Capt. Branch. Had he done so he would have discovered how perilously close they were to the dangers off Green Point. The second officer took another bearing at 00:23 and at this time, Capt. Branch stopped engines and checked the ship’s ability to go astern. Four minutes later the second officer took a third fix and entered the ship’s position on the chart. When he had finished he commented that the rocks on the shore were clearly visible when the beam of light from the lighthouse fell upon them. It was about this time that the boatswain uttered a warning of breakers ahead. The master immediately put the ship astern and once clear of the area the position of the ship was again fixed. Satisfied that he was clear of danger, Capt. Branch turned the ship to port and ordered “Slow ahead”. Then, when he was sure that they were heading for deeper water, he rang down for “Half ahead”. At 00:37 the boatswain once again warned of breakers ahead. The master ordered the ship hard to port but it was too late. There was a sudden lurch and the ship was on the reef, off Green Point.

As the engine-room began to flood the engines were shut down for fear of an explosion and Capt. Branch realised that the ship was in grave danger. Every wave that broke over the S. A. Seafarer pushed her further and further onto the reef. Hurriedly, but calmly, the passengers and crew gathered in the lounge while they awaited instructions from the master. By this time it was obvious that there was no chance of saving the vessel. The first message from the ship was one of urgency: “Please take off passengers and crew as soon as possible”. Rescue operations from the shore were immediately set into motion. The tugs F.T. Bates and C.G. White left Duncan Dock and manoeuvred into position outside the breakers off Green Point in order to render whatever assistance possible.

As time dragged on several attempts were made to rig a breeches buoy but the wind and mountainous seas played havoc with the lines, constantly carrying them away and fouling them in the rocks. It was then decided that this method would be too hazardous and that a helicopter rescue should be attempted at first light. At 04:42, after being subjected to massive seas and waves, the S. A. Seafarer broke her back. Rescue operations were now being hampered by lack of adequate light and it was decided to use the beam from Green Point lighthouse. The revolving mechanism was therefore stopped and the beam focused on the S.A. Seafarer. A helicopter flown by Commandant Tatham was then manoeuvred into position over the stricken vessel in an endeavour to lower a walkie-talkie and thus establish direct communication with the shore; messages were previously being relayed to the rescue crew on the shore via Cape Town Radio. The first attempt was a disaster and the walkie-talkie was smashed but the second attempt was fruitful and direct ship-to-shore communication was established.

Although the forward section of the vessel was steady the stern section rocked violently as each wave struck. By this time those on board had gathered in and around the master’s, cabin as it was feared that the ship’s mast would fall onto the lounge area. Even in this terrible predicament, tea and biscuits were served to the crew and passengers. Helicopter rescue operations started at dawn and at 07:55 the first passenger, Mrs. Louise Waterson, was safely lifted to shore. Shortly after she was joined by her husband. From then on the rescue operation ran smoothly and at 10:15 Capt. Branch was the last person to leave.

For weeks after the stranding wreckage from the SA. Seafarer continued to be washed ashore. Drums of tetraethyl lead were feared to have burst as hundreds of dead crayfish and perlemoen were washed ashore but laboratory tests revealed that they had actually been killed by a wood preservative, pentachlorophenol, which had been carried in the ship’s hold.

The subsequent court of inquiry found Capt. Branch negligent on three counts:

(1) Setting an unsafe course;

(2) Stopping the vessel and putting the engines astern at a time when she was within two cables of foul ground at Green Point and on a lee shore; and

(3) Not appreciating the seriousness of the situation even at this late stage and not ordering “Full astern” to take the vessel clear of danger.

Cap.t Branch’s certificate of competency as master was suspended for two years and the court also reprimanded the second officer for negligence in failing to warn the master of the imprudence of their course before the stranding. During the hearing Capt. Branch told the court that the stranding could have been caused by a shoal extending further seaward than shown on the chart, or by an uncharted pinnacle in the line of his course. In order to remove any doubt a survey was carried out by an underwater “sledge” pulled by a power boat. Nothing was found.

A contract to get rid of the wreck was eventually awarded to a scrap metal firm and today there is no visible evidence of the disaster.

By Robin Thompson

Friday August 19

I awoke this morning with the air conditioning having kicked in at some point during the night, and I was cold. I thought the coffee shop in the main building sounded interesting; but when I went over there, it was already queued up to the door. So, not having learnt my lesson from previous day, I thought I would stop off and get something on the way down.

Looking at the map, I thought route 1 passed really nothing of much interest once it left 101, so I thought I would continue on 101 right to Los Angeles. Once 101 ran beside the sea once more, we passed wide sandy beaches, dull Californian coastal towns and the occasional island just offshore. Elsewhere, the road ran through brown, rolling hills and vineyards.

Santa Barbara looked fine, from the freeway; palm trees mixed in with the faux Spanish villas. I stopped off at some nameless town to look for somewhere for breakfast; but could either find no where or find no parking spaces. In the end, I went into some sprawling town, along a strip mall; and ended up in a Subway; by that point I was too hungry to care. The weather was fine, hot and sunny, and getting warmer with every mile I went south.

As we approached Los Angeles, the urban sprawl got ever thicker and 101 ever wider. I thought that Los Angeles airport, LAX, would be signposted of a major north/south route; but as ever, I was wrong. I headed ever deeper into Los Angeles, the traffic got heavier, and the turnoffs ever more familiar. By the time I got to Hollywood Boulevard I was worried. Stuck in a traffic jam, I looked at my guide book and realised I should have turned off miles before and headed to Santa Monica. I thought I worked out a route, and headed into the Downtown area before eventually heading west towards Santa Monica. As I approached Santa Monica, the signs for the airport appeared, and I began to relax. However, it was not easy, as LAX is as surrounded by sprawl as Heathrow is. In the end, after driving round three quarters of it, I saw the signs for the hire car drop off, and once I was satisfied where to go in the morning, I checked into the hotel nearest the Hertz yard. It turned out to be the Sheraton, and I was on the 300th floor, or something. By this point, I was hot and bothered, and all I wanted was air conditioning and cold drink.

After staring at my luggage for some time, I got down to work to pack; repack; and repack again. The case weighed a ton in the end, but it had wheels. My rucksack was to be left behind, and everything else jammed into the camera bag I bought in Portland.

That night I went to the bar to find that there was beer tasting available. Not clever, but I did partake. I got talking to a guy from Minnesota, and he was fine. He was on a business trip and missed his flight home this afternoon. We included a German in our conversation, out of politeness really; big mistake. The German thought he would try to teach us some words, and was insistent we learn this word which meant something bet; or he could have been trying to tell us his name; who knows? I did drink a little more than I intended, but they had Hoegaarten in bottles, which was too good to pass up; at least I lay off the whiskey.

I was hoping that my trip down to Athens would allow me two visits in a row when I wasn't tear gassed and up till late in the afternoon of Tuesday it seemed that was exactly what was going to happen. Despite the massive crowds that turned up in Syntagma Square to mark the visit of German chancellor, Angela Merkel the mood of the people was peaceful if not calm.

Despite draconian security measures which included a ban on any form of gathering or assembly along the planned route from Athens airport to the centre between 60,000 and 80,000 turned up to voice their anger and frustration not only with EU - IMF imposed austerity but also their own corrupt government coalition.

As the day wore on groups of stone throwing youths started their ritualised attacks on the riot police units that had lined the square. It's hard to express the surrealistic nature if such clashes as they seem to serve little purpose with both sides acting out a pre-arranged script which they've failed to share with the rest of us. To add to the sense of the unreal the small army of photographers and camera operators present gave the scene the feel of some alternative sports match.

Of course, the tear gas and the chunks of marble which often filled the air were real enough and at one point I was forced to retreat as I had not brought any protection. Fearing the possibility that I'd be stopped by the police I'd left my gas mask at home rather than face a day in police custody while they checked out my ID.

At any point the police could have used their overwhelming force to clear the place in just a few minutes, but instead they chose to play a bizarre game of cat and mouse with masked protesters. Even when they managed to catch someone the crowds immediately swarmed around them hurling every kind of vile insult in the Greek language to show just what they thought of them.

True to form the Greek police managed to foul up their image once more, this time by using a woman detainee as a human shield against stone throwers in a narrow back street, an action which ensured the story went global.

Later on, like children bored of playing the same old game for hours on end the police entered Syntagma Square in force using batons, pepper spray and tear gas to clear the area, once gain using their doctrine of casual brutality in the name of restoring public order.

The same absurdist script was also playing out for the cameras in the streets behind parliament as Greek prime minister, Antonis Samaras and Angela Merkel strolled through the tree lined streets on the way to a joint press conference. I assume the images were intended to show that contrary to foreign press reports the PM could walk freely in public without fear of attack.

What the TV pictures did not show were the seven water canons parked just up the road and 1000's of heavily armed riot police that separated the leaders from the seething demonstrator in Syntagma. With security measures as tight as these even Barack Obama could happily spend a carefree morning window shopping in down town Kabul or Baghdad.

It hard to fathom what was the point of the whole expensive exercise since Merkel said little of substance and merely repeated her position that Greece needed to stick to the terms of the bailout deal and press ahead with yet more tax hikes, public spending cuts and lay offs. Instead of strengthening Samaras's position within Greece's shaky coalition government, Merkel underlined just how little real power Greece's political leadership has in its negotiations with the EU/IMF/ECB troika.

On the other hand the hardware stores in Monestiraki which do a roaring trade in improvised gas masks and marble wholesalers who regular replace the smashed stone work in Syntagma had a great day

Getting my eye in after a long lay off!

Think about it first, what is your guess? Likely you already had a gender

in mind....Well if you expected we're having a *BOY*, you're wrong!! We're

having a girl! :) We had the long ultrasound appointment yesterday, and we

visited with my doctor today so she could explain everything to us. At

first the technician could not determine the gender because the baby was

sitting down sort of indian-style, so she had me get up and touch my toes 3

times. After that both she and the doctor were certain that it's a girl.

The ultrasound was the coolest experience ever! I feel so blessed that we

have moving pictures now to actually see the baby moving around. The tech

who performed our ultrasound, Joy, was an expert, she's been doing it for

30+ years. She said when she started they didn't even have moving pictures!

We got to see the baby moving her mouth in the drinking motion, so cute! We

saw all the bones of the arms, legs, fingers & toes. Everything appears to

be perfectly healthy with the spine, kidneys, heart, head & stomach. They

gave us a perfect report! Also, this confirmed that we have the lowest

chance of all that our baby has Down's syndrome.

The only thing that they said they're going to monitor, is a very slight

risk of growth depression due to the odd placement of the umbilical cord on

the placenta. My doctor assured me that it's not statistically proven at

all because she's seen plenty of baby's with this issue that are enormous.

But since our baby's umbilical cord connects to the edge of the placenta

(rather than somewhere toward the middle), theoretically she could have

trouble getting all the nutrients and growing. However, she said so far our

baby's even a little bit ahead so the ultrasound showed us having a due

date of Dec 27th, rather than the 30th, so we'll see! It's actually kind of

cool though because this means we get to do another ultrasound in 9 weeks,

when normally we wouldn't! I'm really excited to see the baby when she's

that big.

I attached a picture that has our 2 favorite pictures from the ultrasound.

You can see her cute profile with nose & lips (whose do they look like?!),

and the other one is looking directly at her face and she's smiling! I also

attached pictures of me in our new apartment! We moved last month to an

apartment in Chinatown and we're really enjoying it. Who wants to come

visit?!

T-Mobile USA workers on Monday sent a loud, clear message to their CEO Philipp Humm: Keep good call center jobs in America and bring back the thousands you've shipped overseas.

More than 100 CWA members, along with other union and community supporters, delivered the 100,000-signature petition -- criticizing

the company's decision to close seven US call centers and lay off 3,300 workers in June -- to T-Mobile headquarters in Bellevue, Wash.

Protesters demanded that Humm return 6,000 overseas jobs, which have been moved to countries like Honduras and the Philippines, and ensure that workers can freely choose union representation without fear of retaliation.

Scatsta Airport closed back in June 2020 laying off 50 jobs with the oil and gas flights which the airport was used for moving to Sumburgh Airport. This has meant there is a bus required to go from Sellaness to the airport and the bus will pick up workers at either Sellaness or SVT to transfer them to the airport where it will wait for the flights and then depart back up north again once the flight has landed. There is at least 4 runs a day running Monday to Friday and can use any vehicle depending on the passenger numbers.

The Irish Police/Gardai were told to 'lay off'.

The author Dan Brown made a fortune from the Da Vinci Code in which he concocted tales of Vatican criminality, intrigue and murder.

It now appears that the Irish Catholic Church, the Irish Police/Gardai/Irish State and the Vatican conspired together to cover up the murder of a beautiful little 10 year old girl on a lonely country road in County Sligo in 1970. Some months after her murder her little body was discovered dumped in a Sligo bog...a long long way from the opulence of the the Vatican City. Only the investigators of Barnadette Connolly's murder would have known of this connection because, just when they were homing in on the main suspect, word came down from 'above' telling them to lay off.

The suspect priest was 'moved' to somewhere in Africa during the investigation and died - far too late- in 2001.

One can't help wondering, if it was so easy to get away with such a crime in Ireland in 1970, how many children could have been raped/murdered and dumped in the African bush by Vatican lunatics.

To progress the 'theory' further: How many children's bodies all over the world down through centuries have been similarly dumped by the 'pie in the sky salesmen' from the Vatican which sent out the message..."Keep your mouth shut and it will be sorted".

I know that there those out there who think that, just like the bible, I'm making this up as I go along to suit the occasion. Well, all I can say to those people is: Reality is a bastard but, some of us have to deal with it.

When you think of all the saints who were 'created' by the Catholic Church over centuries - many of whom were persecuted for their 'faith' - what about creating a real saint of someone who was murdered by the Catholic Church?

What about SAINT BERNADETTE CONNOLLY?

I'd like to see the expressions on the faces of 'frail' little cardinals when that request comes in. Of course, it never will.

Now, isn't that a lovely little story for the 'faithful' to consider as they genuflect before one of the Vatican's alters somewhere in Ireland tomorrow!

Who wants to come

visit?!

With love,

PS: We're still mulling around with names, but we're not telling anyone

till she's born! :D

Not to lay off doctors only cut costs!

Text adapted by me from the lead paragraphs of Wikipedia articles. Thank you Jimbo Wales! Thank you Wikipedians.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook

Farcebook is a social shafting website operated and privately owned by Farcebook, Inc. Since September 2006, anyone over the age of 3 with a valid e-mail address can become a Farcebooker. Farcebookers can add fwends, send them flapdoodle and silly messages, update their personal pwofiles to baffle their fwends with more hot air, poke one another and throw cakes and cows at each other. Additionally farcebookers can join shamworks organized by workshaft, schoolshaft, or frat cluster. The website's name stems from the colloquial name for confetti given to jokers at the false start of the academic year by university dicks in charge aimed at helping novice farceurs to shaft each other better.

Myface is a group adulation website. Its headquarters are on Fantasy Island, California, US, where it shares an office building with its overlord, Mews Corp. Digital Media, owned by Mews Corporation. Myface became the most abused social shafting site in the United States in June 2006. According to popScore, Myface was overtaken internationally by its main competitor, Farcebook, in April 2008. Myface employs 10 peeple, after laying off 90% of its workforce in June 2009; the company does not disclose revenues or profits separately from Mews Corporation. The 100th account was created on August 9, 2006, in the Netherlands.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter

Titter is a social guffawing and microlaffing service that enables its well-paid clients to send and read wisecrackes and pranks known as teets. Teets are joke-based puns of up to 140 characters displayed on the satirist's stage and delivered to the satirist's subscribers, known as wall klowns. Misanthropes can restrict joke delivery to those in their circle of clodhoppers, or, by default, allow open access. Since late 2009, buffoons can follow lists of cavilers instead of following individual jokesmiths. All blockheads can send and receive teets via the Titter website Short Pun Service (SPS), or external speakers with ultra-tweety sound. While Titter itself costs nothing but laffing gas to use, accessing it through SPS may incur annoying fone charges. Since its creation in 2006 by The Joker and Catwoman, Titter has gained notoriety and popularity thruout the solar system. It is sometimes described as the "SPS of the galaxy." The use of Titter for sending and receiving gags by external buffoonery often eclipses direct use of Titter.

This is my skate/bike/scooter gang. Aka the skullz (self appointed name by the kiddos), #mywhy

Although they are loving the skate life on these sunny lockdown days the photo is them showing us what they think of COVID and lockdowns.

If you think the hell raiser in the pink skirt looks a bit like the girl from the ring you’re not wrong. I can confirm she has been attempting to climb on the ceiling at home, She’s even earned herself the nickname Sleia during Level 4.

The next mini me aka Bloody Mary (her self appointed skate gang name/she may need to lay off the YouTube) was kind enough to tell the girl from the ring in the line at the diary last week that she (Sleia) has COVID. This escalated to Sleia chasing her sister around like a cage fighter yelling I don’t have COVID, I don’t have COVID. The spectators really enjoyed the show.

My 10 year old bonus child must think that if you wear your COVID mask when you flip the bird we won’t know who it is 😂😂. At least her hands are clean - she is a super sanitiser and washes her hands every chance she gets in a slightly OCD way. A world full of this new virus is pretty overwhelming for kids and it has turned her into the germ police . When she grows up her Dad and I think she’ll end up as a medical scientist, which isn’t a bad thing.

The eldest in the pic has enough sense to take some action on getting out of these lockdowns plus is worried RnV will be cancelled so she, her Dad and myself have all had our 1st vaccine as we believe herd immunity is the only way to prevent future lockdowns, keep everyone safe and keep the economy going. #mywhy, lots of whys

We can’t wait to get back to normality soon, Sleia, Bloody Mary, the Super sanitiser and the Festival goer really need it! We all want to go on adventures outside of our neighbourhood again and see all of our family and friends that we are missing. #mywhy, lots of whys. A vaccine that takes 10 seconds is a small price to pay.

P.S. turn the sound on for the vid…. City in lockdown….. got nowhere to go

the trident is in the lay off (soon to be the bus stops) at the railway station

Stupidity drew me out of my nice warm, dry house with GB Curling on the box, to see a Tractor in the pouring rain at Kempston Hardwick on a Derby Test Train, 3Q35 Derby to Reading Triangle Sidings, This is heading for Bletchley via the Marston Vale Line where it will reverse back to Bedford to take the MML south to the Cricklewood Curve to Acton and the GWML.

On the second day of operation of the D Trains after a lay off of several weeks since before Christmas, a Bedford bound service calls at KH.

The baby squirrel that wouldn't lay off the nosh and made the woodpecker chick very annoyed :-)

I took the shot from my balcony.

I used a Bauer E 528 ABS flash mounted on my Panasonic Lumix FZ30.

I like the result, but (and this is quite interesting as far as the animal eye constitution is concerned), the squirrel got awful red demoniacal eyes, which I removed in PS, while the woodpecker didn't seem to be affected at all.... I think I'll post this in the animals group :-)

Bell media, is a proud Canadian Company ? It's Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas Nevada USA. Prior to the big game CTV has been flooding North American airways with ads to promote their full coverage of the upcoming American Superbowl and they will then broadcast 10 straight hours of uninterrupted prime time live T.V. coverage of this prime American sporting event on Superbowl Sunday 2024 ? However, on the other hand, back home in their home country of Canada, they don't broadcast anything at all, nothing (zero) blanco, zilch, silencio, not even 1 minute of CTV coverage of their own 2024 Canadian Grey Cup game for their fellow Canadians to enjoy ? www.flickr.com/photos/74039487@N02/53523500175/in/datepos...

Feb 2024 - Halifax Nova Scotia,

Bell media and CTV have deafened and blindfolded many East Coast residents after eliminating many critical hours of local and community news programming in the Atlantic region ?

Recent Bell Canada Corporate decisions have now left many Maritimers in a vulnerable position ? East Coast Provinces appear to be the target of severe local live Newstime cancellations and these cut-backs have left many Maritimers without their daily Noon news hour updates that are broadcast everyday all week long ? ATV viewers will now be forced to tune into the other station (CBC) where CBC tends to run mostly world international news along with their select choice of the National News, along with lengthy live news conferences that are put on by the PM and other liberal party members ?

Aside from terminating the popular weekday ATV Noon hour news show, CTV has also downsized in half the very popular and iconic , 'ATV live at five' 5 P.M. local community news program, (prompting long time popular host Jason Baxter to seek early retirement) ? Adding to the devistating loss of this much needed news reporting that is traditionally broadcast every week, Bell will also now terminate all weekend Saturday and Sunday local news reporting currently running on ATV ? The cancellation and elimination of so much allotted local news airtime that is normally given to Atlantic Canadians surely threatens the safety and security of residents especially now that there will be a 24 hour local news blackout for 2 full days each and every weekend and even for as much as 3 consecutive days every holiday long weekend ? And so it seems that arch rival CBC has taken over prime time live local news reporting in the Maritimes and Bell Canada is blaming the Liberal Government's new Bill C-18 for them having to slash so many prime time hours of local and Provincial news coverage in the Maritimes ?

Now this was an odd little piece from Chevy, the SSR or Super Sport Roadster. Essentially, the SSR was built to compete with the likes of the Ford SVT Lightning, a supercharged version of their conventional Ford F-150. The SSR is similar in that it's powered by a 6.0L V8 engine, giving the car 395hp. Styling was largely influenced by the famous Advanced Design pickup trucks of the 1940's and 50's, being built onto the platform of the long wheelbase Chevy Trailblazer, but to be honest the connection between the two does strike me as rather vague.

Launched in 2003, the car went on sale for princely sum of $42,000, and sales in the first year were lukewarm at best, with only 9,000 cars sold by 2004. Eventually, lay-offs and labour disputes at the Lansing Craft Centre, where the SSR was built, resulted in the factory being shut down in 2006, spelling a premature end to the SSR.

In all, 24,150 SSR's were built, with only 24,112 being sold to customers. Today the SSR is cited as one of the most misguided ventures in motoring history, describing the car's styling as ugly, it's performance as unimpressive, and it's production an absolute shambles.

But for me there is something rather likeable about the SSR. Indeed it's not the prettiest car in the world, but for what it is as a small, versatile little pickup truck, I don't think it's as bad as many people make it out to be. I wouldn't exactly go out of my way to own one, but I can see what the attraction is. :)

If not for Chris Gayle's headline-grabbing antics, Dwayne Bravo might have expected a more torrid time this summer. The murmurs and rumblings surrounding his absence from West Indies' unpopular two-Test series against England threatened to bubble over - particularly as he went on to play a full and active role for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL - but Gayle's Test cricket obituary pushed questions over Bravo's motives to the background.

If Caribbean cricket supporters were upset with Bravo over his appearance in the IPL during a Test series, all is now forgiven. The Trinidadian allrounder turned in perhaps the most complete performance of the World Twenty20 to single-handedly guide West Indies to a stunning seven-wicket victory over the defending champions, India, before a febrile Lord's crowd. Evidently, Gayle is not the only player capable of carrying the West Indies.

Bravo's extended stint in the IPL - which ran concurrently with the West Indians' dispiriting Test defeats at Lord's and Chester-le-Street - appears to have done him no harm. His nippy medium-pacers and deft variations unsettled the opposition batsmen, and went far to restricting the Indians to their lowest 20-over total of the tournament. Gautam Gambhir, MS Dhoni and the brothers Pathan made for an impressive list of dismissals and, fittingly, his figures of 4-38 were the best of his Twenty20 international career.

But he was not done there. Debunking the "no-Gayle, no-Windies" theory, Bravo combined with the impressive Lendl Simmons (44 off 37) to steer his side home with eight-balls to spare. He did so in the most emphatic style possible - blasting Zaheer Khan over the extra-cover boundary - to round off a 36-ball innings of 66 not out; another career-best.

"I used the opportunity wisely today," Bravo said. "I've had two stints in the IPL and I've gained a lot of experience by sharing experiences with a lot of Test players. I'm happy and flexible and I don't want to play at a particular batting spot. It doesn't really matter where I bat."

Bravo returned from an eight-month injury-enforced lay-off in March, and his surgically-repaired left-ankle is in for its sternest test on Saturday. In a curious piece of scheduling, the West Indians will face the surging South Africans in the first match of a double-header at The Oval, having played the late game at Lord's on Friday. That represents a 15-hour turn-around; even less when commuting times and warm-ups are factored in.

Still, given the enormity of their accomplishment at Lord's, West Indies will presumably be happy to take on Graeme Smith's men at a time when the excitement of the victory over India is still coursing through their veins. A summer that began disastrously has suddenly, inexplicably, taken a dramatic turn for the better. The bedraggled bunch who limped their way through the series against England have taken on the visage of world-beaters. South Africa would be wise to treat them with respect.

52 Weeks - Week 2 (View On Black)

Telecommunications, in my experience,—and I've worked in this industry since I got out of the Air Force in 1984—has always been volatile. My first post-military job was with MCI in Washington DC, and 2-1/2 years after I got that job I got laid off for the first time. In the time that has passed since, I've...

1) been fired for telling the truth about a mistake I'd made (had I lied, I would've kept my job);

2) resigned from a position because I found something I thought would lead to something better;

3) been laid off from a contracting position (almost, but not quite, self-employed, that is);

4) gone through five mergers/buyouts;

5) spent a short span of time working in retail (unloading trucks and restocking shelves);

6) was laid off from my previous job;

and now I'm facing the possibility of yet another layoff.

I've worked for ten different telecommunications corporations, nine of them in the cellular industry. I've pretty much been in cellular since it started. My employer recently announced that they would be laying off 8,000 employees come March 1st, and there are already rumours circulating that it will be more like 10,000. I understand that this news (of the 8,000) has already reached Europe.

I was working for the largest cellular carrier in the country, but recovering from neck surgery at home, when 9/11 happened. I lost my job that following October, shortly after I returned to work, only to have to face 18 months of unemployment and a marriage that quickly went down the tubes.

To say I've been through a lot would be an understatement.

When I went through those 18 months of unemployment, I spent my evenings writing and managed to write an 80,000+ word novel that never saw the light of day. Since then, I've written quite a few more stories, mostly short stories, plus a really bad 60,000+ word novel. Although my short stories have received only rejections, all but one have been the good, encouraging sort of rejections. By that I mean that editors have actually taken the time to write handwritten notes to me, when their normal practice is to have their first readers slip a form letter rejection into the envelope and send it back as quickly as the post will carry it. When an editor takes the time to write a handwritten note, it's a good sign, it's a milestone worth celebrating. (My track record with non-fiction is even better. All but one article I've written has been published, and the one got sent on to a second publisher by the publisher I'd sent it to, which is practically unheard of!)

Not surprisingly, I've grown tired of telecom and their heartless ways over the years. I'm glad that I'm now debt-free, as it means whether I get laid off or not, I'll be better able to handle this than in years past. I may still end up looking for employment in telecom since it's what I know, and since it does, admittedly, pay quite well. However,... there's little to be said for being paid a lot of money when your heart is not in what you're doing and when, to be quite honest, you've grown to hate it. As the Biblical writer put it, "the love of money is a root [NOTE: he did not say THE root) of all sorts of evil." For that reason, I'm thinking very seriously of forsaking telecom altogether and pursuing something, anything that will be far more fulfilling.

As with what happened to me following 9/11, this seems a most opportune moment to again try to make a change that I've longed after since before I graduated high school. (To give you an idea of how long ago that was—I'm gonna show my age now—for extra credit in my American Film class in my senior year of high school, I wrote a screenplay scene for Stephen King's novel 'SALEM'S LOT. I wrote this one year before the (absolutely horrible) made-for-TV movie, starring David Soul, came out.)
