I awoke this morning with the air conditioning having kicked in at some point during the night, and I was cold. I thought the coffee shop in the main building sounded interesting; but when I went over there, it was already queued up to the door. So, not having learnt my lesson from previous day, I thought I would stop off and get something on the way down.
Looking at the map, I thought route 1 passed really nothing of much interest once it left 101, so I thought I would continue on 101 right to Los Angeles. Once 101 ran beside the sea once more, we passed wide sandy beaches, dull Californian coastal towns and the occasional island just offshore. Elsewhere, the road ran through brown, rolling hills and vineyards.
Santa Barbara looked fine, from the freeway; palm trees mixed in with the faux Spanish villas. I stopped off at some nameless town to look for somewhere for breakfast; but could either find no where or find no parking spaces. In the end, I went into some sprawling town, along a strip mall; and ended up in a Subway; by that point I was too hungry to care. The weather was fine, hot and sunny, and getting warmer with every mile I went south.
As we approached Los Angeles, the urban sprawl got ever thicker and 101 ever wider. I thought that Los Angeles airport, LAX, would be signposted of a major north/south route; but as ever, I was wrong. I headed ever deeper into Los Angeles, the traffic got heavier, and the turnoffs ever more familiar. By the time I got to Hollywood Boulevard I was worried. Stuck in a traffic jam, I looked at my guide book and realised I should have turned off miles before and headed to Santa Monica. I thought I worked out a route, and headed into the Downtown area before eventually heading west towards Santa Monica. As I approached Santa Monica, the signs for the airport appeared, and I began to relax. However, it was not easy, as LAX is as surrounded by sprawl as Heathrow is. In the end, after driving round three quarters of it, I saw the signs for the hire car drop off, and once I was satisfied where to go in the morning, I checked into the hotel nearest the Hertz yard. It turned out to be the Sheraton, and I was on the 300th floor, or something. By this point, I was hot and bothered, and all I wanted was air conditioning and cold drink.
After staring at my luggage for some time, I got down to work to pack; repack; and repack again. The case weighed a ton in the end, but it had wheels. My rucksack was to be left behind, and everything else jammed into the camera bag I bought in Portland.
That night I went to the bar to find that there was beer tasting available. Not clever, but I did partake. I got talking to a guy from Minnesota, and he was fine. He was on a business trip and missed his flight home this afternoon. We included a German in our conversation, out of politeness really; big mistake. The German thought he would try to teach us some words, and was insistent we learn this word which meant something bet; or he could have been trying to tell us his name; who knows? I did drink a little more than I intended, but they had Hoegaarten in bottles, which was too good to pass up; at least I lay off the whiskey.
I was hoping that my trip down to Athens would allow me two visits in a row when I wasn't tear gassed and up till late in the afternoon of Tuesday it seemed that was exactly what was going to happen. Despite the massive crowds that turned up in Syntagma Square to mark the visit of German chancellor, Angela Merkel the mood of the people was peaceful if not calm.
Despite draconian security measures which included a ban on any form of gathering or assembly along the planned route from Athens airport to the centre between 60,000 and 80,000 turned up to voice their anger and frustration not only with EU - IMF imposed austerity but also their own corrupt government coalition.
As the day wore on groups of stone throwing youths started their ritualised attacks on the riot police units that had lined the square. It's hard to express the surrealistic nature if such clashes as they seem to serve little purpose with both sides acting out a pre-arranged script which they've failed to share with the rest of us. To add to the sense of the unreal the small army of photographers and camera operators present gave the scene the feel of some alternative sports match.
Of course, the tear gas and the chunks of marble which often filled the air were real enough and at one point I was forced to retreat as I had not brought any protection. Fearing the possibility that I'd be stopped by the police I'd left my gas mask at home rather than face a day in police custody while they checked out my ID.
At any point the police could have used their overwhelming force to clear the place in just a few minutes, but instead they chose to play a bizarre game of cat and mouse with masked protesters. Even when they managed to catch someone the crowds immediately swarmed around them hurling every kind of vile insult in the Greek language to show just what they thought of them.
True to form the Greek police managed to foul up their image once more, this time by using a woman detainee as a human shield against stone throwers in a narrow back street, an action which ensured the story went global.
Later on, like children bored of playing the same old game for hours on end the police entered Syntagma Square in force using batons, pepper spray and tear gas to clear the area, once gain using their doctrine of casual brutality in the name of restoring public order.
The same absurdist script was also playing out for the cameras in the streets behind parliament as Greek prime minister, Antonis Samaras and Angela Merkel strolled through the tree lined streets on the way to a joint press conference. I assume the images were intended to show that contrary to foreign press reports the PM could walk freely in public without fear of attack.
What the TV pictures did not show were the seven water canons parked just up the road and 1000's of heavily armed riot police that separated the leaders from the seething demonstrator in Syntagma. With security measures as tight as these even Barack Obama could happily spend a carefree morning window shopping in down town Kabul or Baghdad.
It hard to fathom what was the point of the whole expensive exercise since Merkel said little of substance and merely repeated her position that Greece needed to stick to the terms of the bailout deal and press ahead with yet more tax hikes, public spending cuts and lay offs. Instead of strengthening Samaras's position within Greece's shaky coalition government, Merkel underlined just how little real power Greece's political leadership has in its negotiations with the EU/IMF/ECB troika.
On the other hand the hardware stores in Monestiraki which do a roaring trade in improvised gas masks and marble wholesalers who regular replace the smashed stone work in Syntagma had a great day
Think about it first, what is your guess? Likely you already had a gender
in mind....Well if you expected we're having a *BOY*, you're wrong!! We're
having a girl! :) We had the long ultrasound appointment yesterday, and we
visited with my doctor today so she could explain everything to us. At
first the technician could not determine the gender because the baby was
sitting down sort of indian-style, so she had me get up and touch my toes 3
times. After that both she and the doctor were certain that it's a girl.
The ultrasound was the coolest experience ever! I feel so blessed that we
have moving pictures now to actually see the baby moving around. The tech
who performed our ultrasound, Joy, was an expert, she's been doing it for
30+ years. She said when she started they didn't even have moving pictures!
We got to see the baby moving her mouth in the drinking motion, so cute! We
saw all the bones of the arms, legs, fingers & toes. Everything appears to
be perfectly healthy with the spine, kidneys, heart, head & stomach. They
gave us a perfect report! Also, this confirmed that we have the lowest
chance of all that our baby has Down's syndrome.
The only thing that they said they're going to monitor, is a very slight
risk of growth depression due to the odd placement of the umbilical cord on
the placenta. My doctor assured me that it's not statistically proven at
all because she's seen plenty of baby's with this issue that are enormous.
But since our baby's umbilical cord connects to the edge of the placenta
(rather than somewhere toward the middle), theoretically she could have
trouble getting all the nutrients and growing. However, she said so far our
baby's even a little bit ahead so the ultrasound showed us having a due
date of Dec 27th, rather than the 30th, so we'll see! It's actually kind of
cool though because this means we get to do another ultrasound in 9 weeks,
when normally we wouldn't! I'm really excited to see the baby when she's
that big.
I attached a picture that has our 2 favorite pictures from the ultrasound.
You can see her cute profile with nose & lips (whose do they look like?!),
and the other one is looking directly at her face and she's smiling! I also
attached pictures of me in our new apartment! We moved last month to an
apartment in Chinatown and we're really enjoying it. Who wants to come
visit?!

The chimney of The Calico Printers Ass. At Rhodes nr Middleton. The LD drawing shows its original 11 ton cast iron cap, removed in 1922 and the RH drawing shows the chimney as it is now in 1977.
Built in 1846 for the then owners of Rhodes print works Salis Schabbe & Co. Its dimensions are 39'-0” ground to foundation, 321'-0” ground to top, 22'-0” dia. inside at base, 9'-0” dia. at top inside, 1,500,000 bricks used and the original cap, CI was 11 tons. This cap was removed in 1922 by John Faulkner and his men of Strangeways Manchester. The top was partly rebuilt. The chimney was not constructed by a huge building consortium but by plain John Ashton of Blackley with a few bricklayers and labourers and it took 4 years inclusive of laying off time for chimney to settle with such a weight of brickwork. It has only been repaired 3 times since built.
The chimney is on Manchester Old Rd on the right out of Middleton. The flues run under the road to the boilers on the left.”

The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary or United States Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island (often just referred to as Alcatraz or the Rock) was a maximum high-security federal prison on Alcatraz Island, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) off the coast of San Francisco, California, which operated from August 11, 1934, until March 21, 1963.
The main prison building was built in 1910–1912 during its time as a United States Army military prison; Alcatraz had been the site of a citadel since the 1860s. The United States Disciplinary Barracks, Pacific Branch on Alcatraz was acquired by the United States Department of Justice on October 12, 1933, and the island became a prison of the Federal Bureau of Prisons in August 1934 after the buildings were modernized to meet the requirements of a top-notch security prison. Given this high security and the location of Alcatraz in the cold waters and strong currents of San Francisco Bay, the prison operators believed Alcatraz to be escape-proof and America's strongest prison.
Alcatraz was designed to hold prisoners who continuously caused trouble at other federal prisons. One of the world's most notorious and best known prisons over the years, Alcatraz housed some 1,576 of America's most ruthless criminals including Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud(the "Birdman of Alcatraz"), George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Bumpy Johnson, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Mickey Cohen, Arthur R. "Doc" Barker, Whitey Bulger, and Alvin "Creepy" Karpis (who served more time at Alcatraz than any other inmate). It also provided housing for the Bureau of Prisons' staff and their families. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts during the 29 years of the prison's existence, the most notable of which were the violent escape attempt of May 1946 known as the "Battle of Alcatraz", and the arguably successful "Escape from Alcatraz" by Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin in June 1962 in one of the most intricate escapes ever devised. Faced with high maintenance costs and a poor reputation, Alcatraz closed on March 21, 1963.
The three-story cellhouse included the main four blocks of the jail, A-block, B-block, C-block, and D-block, the warden's office, visitation room, the library, and the barber shop. The prison cells typically measured 9 feet (2.7 m) by 5 feet (1.5 m) and 7 feet (2.1 m) high. The cells were primitive and lacked privacy, with a bed, a desk and a washbasin and toilet on the back wall, with few furnishings except a blanket. African-Americans were segregated from the rest in cell designation due to racial abuse being prevalent. D-Block housed the worst inmates and five cells at the end of it were designated as "The Hole", where badly behaving prisoners would be sent for periods of punishment, often brutally so. The dining hall and kitchen lay off the main building in an extended part where both prisoners and staff would eat three meals a day together. The Alcatraz Hospital was above the dining hall.
Corridors of the prison were named after major American streets such as Broadway and Michigan Avenue. Working at the prison was considered a privilege for inmates and many of the better inmates were employed in the Model Industries Building and New Industries Building during the day, actively involved in providing for the military in jobs such as sewing and woodwork and performing various maintenance and laundry chores.
Today the penitentiary is a public museum and one of San Francisco's major tourist attractions, attracting some 1.5 million visitors annually. The former prison is now operated by the National Park Service's Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the badly eroded buildings of the former prison have been subject to restoration works in recent times and maintained

I got my Century out for a day, after a long lay-off. I realised I haven't put a picture of it up here, so here it is. The little tripod is probably much too light for it, but it's the only tripod I own. You see the camera enjoying a day out in Knaresborough.
I worked out from the serial number that the camera was made in 1962. I bought it (over the Web) from a seller in California. I have three and a half lenses for it: the Graflar 101/4.5 that's on it in the picture is a common standard lens for it; a coated triplet. I also have a Tele-Xenar 240/5.6, and an Ysarex 127/4.7 (a Rodenstock lens made for one of the top-end Polaroids). The Ysarex is too close to the Graflar in length, I suppose; it's a Tessar type, I think, and very sharp (it would cover 4x5 inch, so I'm only using the middle of its image). I have set the rangefinder up for the Ysarex. The Tele-Xenar is a beautiful object, but I haven't given it the use it should have; the rangefinder can't be adjusted far enough to work with it, sadly.
The half-a-lens is a 60 mm Hexanon, taken off a Koni-Omega and mounted in a shutter (by someone else), which was cheap but is too scratched to be much use. I always feel the need for a wide lens though - maybe not 60 - a 75 mm would be nice. I have a 75 from an old folder, in fact, but it doesn't cover the big format very well.
[Edit: I finally got a 65mm f/6.8 Angulon for the camera, but it's not easy to use. Firstly, when it's pulled out to infinity, you can't use any movements comfortably; the standard is still inside the body. Also, the shutter doesn't have an attachment for a cable release, or 'T' shutter; to focus, I have to hold the release lever down on 'B' (somehow I didn't think this would be a big problem; maybe I'm getting old; or maybe I'm just not buying enough lenses to keep in practice at it..) Thirdly, f/6.8 is quite hard to use for focusing anyway, even under a dark-cloth. ]
The Century can use sheet film holders (2¼ x 3¼ inch), but I suspect it would have been rare to use cut film in this size even in 1962, so really it's for 120 roll film. I have backs to do 2¼ x 3¼ inch (6x9 cm-ish; actually more like 6x8; I use 6x9 in my tags, because the quarters are a bugger to type), 2¼ x 2¾ (6x7 cm) and 2¼ square (6x6).
Century_graphic used to be my name on here, because I'd just bought it, and was really excited about that, when I started my Flickr account up; I don't use the camera nearly as much as it deserves. When folded it's really compact, and the body is a bakelite-like resin plastic so it's light, and I get away with putting it on my light tripod: so it's a great lightweight field camera.
After spending some days out with my new Ensign Reflex, a much older camera and more clunky to use, the Century felt so modern and convenient!

Scatsta Airport closed back in June 2020 laying off 50 jobs with the oil and gas flights which the airport was used for moving to Sumburgh Airport. This has meant there is a bus required to go from Sellaness to the airport and the bus will pick up workers at either Sellaness or SVT to transfer them to the airport where it will wait for the flights and then depart back up north again once the flight has landed. There is at least 4 runs a day running Monday to Friday and can use any vehicle depending on the passenger numbers.

The Irish Police/Gardai were told to 'lay off'.
The author Dan Brown made a fortune from the Da Vinci Code in which he concocted tales of Vatican criminality, intrigue and murder.
It now appears that the Irish Catholic Church, the Irish Police/Gardai/Irish State and the Vatican conspired together to cover up the murder of a beautiful little 10 year old girl on a lonely country road in County Sligo in 1970. Some months after her murder her little body was discovered dumped in a Sligo bog...a long long way from the opulence of the the Vatican City. Only the investigators of Barnadette Connolly's murder would have known of this connection because, just when they were homing in on the main suspect, word came down from 'above' telling them to lay off.
The suspect priest was 'moved' to somewhere in Africa during the investigation and died - far too late- in 2001.
One can't help wondering, if it was so easy to get away with such a crime in Ireland in 1970, how many children could have been raped/murdered and dumped in the African bush by Vatican lunatics.
To progress the 'theory' further: How many children's bodies all over the world down through centuries have been similarly dumped by the 'pie in the sky salesmen' from the Vatican which sent out the message..."Keep your mouth shut and it will be sorted".
I know that there those out there who think that, just like the bible, I'm making this up as I go along to suit the occasion. Well, all I can say to those people is: Reality is a bastard but,some of us have to deal with it.
When you think of all the saints who were 'created' by the Catholic Church over centuries - many of whom were persecuted for their 'faith' - what about creating a real saint of someone who was murdered by the Catholic Church?

Think about it first, what is your guess? Likely you already had a gender
in mind....Well if you expected we're having a *BOY*, you're wrong!! We're
having a girl! :) We had the long ultrasound appointment yesterday, and we
visited with my doctor today so she could explain everything to us. At
first the technician could not determine the gender because the baby was
sitting down sort of indian-style, so she had me get up and touch my toes 3
times. After that both she and the doctor were certain that it's a girl.
The ultrasound was the coolest experience ever! I feel so blessed that we
have moving pictures now to actually see the baby moving around. The tech
who performed our ultrasound, Joy, was an expert, she's been doing it for
30+ years. She said when she started they didn't even have moving pictures!
We got to see the baby moving her mouth in the drinking motion, so cute! We
saw all the bones of the arms, legs, fingers & toes. Everything appears to
be perfectly healthy with the spine, kidneys, heart, head & stomach. They
gave us a perfect report! Also, this confirmed that we have the lowest
chance of all that our baby has Down's syndrome.
The only thing that they said they're going to monitor, is a very slight
risk of growth depression due to the odd placement of the umbilical cord on
the placenta. My doctor assured me that it's not statistically proven at
all because she's seen plenty of baby's with this issue that are enormous.
But since our baby's umbilical cord connects to the edge of the placenta
(rather than somewhere toward the middle), theoretically she could have
trouble getting all the nutrients and growing. However, she said so far our
baby's even a little bit ahead so the ultrasound showed us having a due
date of Dec 27th, rather than the 30th, so we'll see! It's actually kind of
cool though because this means we get to do another ultrasound in 9 weeks,
when normally we wouldn't! I'm really excited to see the baby when she's
that big.

You can see her cute profile with nose & lips (whose do they look like?!),
and the other one is looking directly at her face and she's smiling! I also
attached pictures of me in our new apartment! We moved last month to an
apartment in Chinatown and we're really enjoying it. Who wants to come
visit?!

If you think the hell raiser in the pink skirt looks a bit like the girl from the ring you’re not wrong. I can confirm she has been attempting to climb on the ceiling at home, She’s even earned herself the nickname Sleia during Level 4.
The next mini me aka Bloody Mary (her self appointed skate gang name/she may need to lay off the YouTube) was kind enough to tell the girl from the ring in the line at the diary last week that she (Sleia) has COVID. This escalated to Sleia chasing her sister around like a cage fighter yelling I don’t have COVID, I don’t have COVID. The spectators really enjoyed the show.
My 10 year old bonus child must think that if you wear your COVID mask when you flip the bird we won’t know who it is 😂😂. At least her hands are clean - she is a super sanitiser and washes her hands every chance she gets in a slightly OCD way. A world full of this new virus is pretty overwhelming for kids and it has turned her into the germ police . When she grows up her Dad and I think she’ll end up as a medical scientist, which isn’t a bad thing.
The eldest in the pic has enough sense to take some action on getting out of these lockdowns plus is worried RnV will be cancelled so she, her Dad and myself have all had our 1st vaccine as we believe herd immunity is the only way to prevent future lockdowns, keep everyone safe and keep the economy going. #mywhy, lots of whys
We can’t wait to get back to normality soon, Sleia, Bloody Mary, the Super sanitiser and the Festival goer really need it! We all want to go on adventures outside of our neighbourhood again and see all of our family and friends that we are missing. #mywhy, lots of whys. I used a Bauer E 528 ABS flash mounted on my Panasonic Lumix FZ30.
I like the result, but (and this is quite interesting as far as the animal eye constitution is concerned), the squirrel got awful red demoniacal eyes, which I removed in PS, while the woodpecker didn't seem to be affected at all.... I think I'll post this in the animals group :-)

If not for Chris Gayle's headline-grabbing antics, Dwayne Bravo might have expected a more torrid time this summer. The murmurs and rumblings surrounding his absence from West Indies' unpopular two-Test series against England threatened to bubble over - particularly as he went on to play a full and active role for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL - but Gayle's Test cricket obituary pushed questions over Bravo's motives to the background.
If Caribbean cricket supporters were upset with Bravo over his appearance in the IPL during a Test series, all is now forgiven. The Trinidadian allrounder turned in perhaps the most complete performance of the World Twenty20 to single-handedly guide West Indies to a stunning seven-wicket victory over the defending champions, India, before a febrile Lord's crowd. Evidently, Gayle is not the only player capable of carrying the West Indies.
Bravo's extended stint in the IPL - which ran concurrently with the West Indians' dispiriting Test defeats at Lord's and Chester-le-Street - appears to have done him no harm. His nippy medium-pacers and deft variations unsettled the opposition batsmen, and went far to restricting the Indians to their lowest 20-over total of the tournament. Gautam Gambhir, MS Dhoni and the brothers Pathan made for an impressive list of dismissals and, fittingly, his figures of 4-38 were the best of his Twenty20 international career.

Telecommunications, in my experience,—and I've worked in this industry since I got out of the Air Force in 1984—has always been volatile. My first post-military job was with MCI in Washington DC, and 2-1/2 years after I got that job I got laid off for the first time. In the time that has passed since, I've...
1) been fired for telling the truth about a mistake I'd made (had I lied, I would've kept my job);
2) resigned from a position because I found something I thought would lead to something better;
3) been laid off from a contracting position (almost, but not quite, self-employed, that is);
4) gone through five mergers/buyouts;
5) spent a short span of time working in retail (unloading trucks and restocking shelves);
6) was laid off from my previous job;
and now I'm facing the possibility of yet another layoff.
I've worked for ten different telecommunications corporations, nine of them in the cellular industry. I've pretty much been in cellular since it started. My employer recently announced that they would be laying off 8,000 employees come March 1st, and there are already rumours circulating that it will be more like 10,000. I understand that this news (of the 8,000) has already reached Europe.
I was working for the largest cellular carrier in the country, but recovering from neck surgery at home, when 9/11 happened. I lost my job that following October, shortly after I returned to work, only to have to face 18 months of unemployment and a marriage that quickly went down the tubes.
To say I've been through a lot would be an understatement.
When I went through those 18 months of unemployment, I spent my evenings writing and managed to write an 80,000+ word novel that never saw the light of day. Since then, I've written quite a few more stories, mostly short stories, plus a really bad 60,000+ word novel. Although my short stories have received only rejections, all but one have been the good, encouraging sort of rejections. By that I mean that editors have actually taken the time to write handwritten notes to me, when their normal practice is to have their first readers slip a form letter rejection into the envelope and send it back as quickly as the post will carry it. When an editor takes the time to write a handwritten note, it's a good sign, it's a milestone worth celebrating. (My track record with non-fiction is even better. All but one article I've written has been published, and the one got sent on to a second publisher by the publisher I'd sent it to, which is practically unheard of!)
Not surprisingly, I've grown tired of telecom and their heartless ways over the years. I'm glad that I'm now debt-free, as it means whether I get laid off or not, I'll be better able to handle this than in years past. I may still end up looking for employment in telecom since it's what I know, and since it does, admittedly, pay quite well. However,... there's little to be said for being paid a lot of money when your heart is not in what you're doing and when, to be quite honest, you've grown to hate it. As the Biblical writer put it, "the love of money is a root [NOTE: he did not say THE root) of all sorts of evil." For that reason, I'm thinking very seriously of forsaking telecom altogether and pursuing something, anything that will be far more fulfilling.
As with what happened to me following 9/11, this seems a most opportune moment to again try to make a change that I've longed after since before I graduated high school. (To give you an idea of how long ago that was—I'm gonna show my age now—for extra credit in my American Film class in my senior year of high school, I wrote a screenplay scene for Stephen King's novel 'SALEM'S LOT. I wrote this one year before the (absolutely horrible) made-for-TV movie, starring David Soul, came out.)

I've used your company a few times over the years and have struck me as being pretty switched on. So I'll be adding some extra information to let you know what I think the current state of the local job market. Especially the predicament local companies have to operate in, 'too much work, not enough workers'.
I made a move to work in the risky startup world in '95 way ahead of the curve in terms of job market, recognising early on there would be more opportunities in new and emerging fields of Internet related software development. I'm not adverse to taking on this risk because risk adverse jobs are usually A) less interesting ideas, technology and companies and B) mundane. So through the millennium and just beyond it I specialised working in small to smallish teams in companies that focussed mostly on building products, not services nor contracts for the Internet. I avoided working on desktop systems and anything really focused exclusively on Microsoft Windows for a good reason. The software I want to work on can be delivered anywhere and everywhere avoiding the technical and support problems associated. This is important. It not only exposes you to new technology but lets you create things you can potentially sell in the international market.
So what's happened since I've last talked? Well lots.
As the building frenzy of dot-com V1.0 boom tapered off, companies started maturing their development practices, re-aligning, laying off teams and re-aligning their strategies as they saw fit. This wasn't something local, this was a global practice. At about this time I made a (good) decision to hold back, look after my children and pursue other things. In that time I've paid off any outstanding debt, integrated into a local community and deeply integrate myself into the next phase of Internet growth, V2 (Web 2.0). So I've had lots of time to think about the opportunities available and where my priorities lie. They consist of three core concepts:
WORK
The nature of software development has changed to the point where 'mere coding' has now become commodified. This means any jobs available are now subject to market forces in the extreme. Therefore I've taken this as an opportunity to do work further up the stack. Instead of just doing software development for other companies I'm now in the process of creating a startup to develop my own product to sell. As such any ideas or expression of ideas I create in code are mine which I wish to capitalise on. Here's some constraints I've set myself:
* Time work for other companies full-time is not really an option
* Location currently at home via broadband.
* Tech skills concentrated on working with Internet related technologies (scripting languages, databases, html/css presentation layers) so working in areas with desktop development is not really an option.
* Soft skills finding/building ways to communicate to potential users in ways that scale.
* Process using processes to conceive, build and deploy products in 1/4yr spans.
* Networking building contacts within the software development market
* Entrepreneurship developing these skills to make, create profit
* Tools choosing my own toolsets to solve problems
* Control I'm in charge, technology, process, networking, comercialisation, reward, loss & risk
REST
Two important things, travel and exercise. The first means I no longer waste 3hrs/day traveling when I could be working. The next bit means I have the opportunity to maintain my fitness levels.
* Travel I have zero downtime on travel
* Exercise I have daily opportunity to exercise.
PLAY
Vitally important as it allows me to develop problems into potential product, tell people about it, listen and turn it into a product and sell it.
* Solve my problems - time to find and solve my own problems and build them into software
* Code - time to choose which
* Communicate - have my own blog, blog engine and photo site.
* Entrepreneurship - spent last 3 years honing my execution skills with a local organisation fund raising.
SUMMARY
So what does this really mean? How can a consultant in a company like yourself help me? Well here are my current priorities. They are pretty simple.

In the section from where this still is captured the "ghosts" with hubcap heads pan left or right to follow the viewer. The remnant rusty auto parts stream out from the central area of the image like rushing stars, also following the motion of the viewer. Meanwhile, the smokey-dusty particle effect is randomly generated and responds to the viewer's position.
The background is a constantly changing grid panel of images of remineralising auto parts. It is these images that tie the work to its location and its reason for being. The McCreadys Creek wetland where the background images were taken is littered with remnants of car bodies dumped there over decades. The mangroves in the area are arguably, still suffering from dieback or, maybe on the way to recovery now that the car dumping has almost ceased. Most of wrecks are now encrusted mounds of hardly recognisable bits that look they may have once been mechanical.
For me the whole process of degeneration, degradation, remineralisation and reclamation of the autos by the wetland is a metaphor for what happens when culture is neglected. This has particular significance in regard to the process of Indigenous reconciliation that is still topical in my country.
I have reused an image series called "The Ghosts of GMH" that I exhibited way back in 1983. Back then I realised that they had stopped putting hubcaps on new cars and the local (Elizabeth, SA) Holden plant was laying off lots of workers. The images had different significance then. Today the auto plant is still operating and still laying people off from time to time.
In this iteration the images of the "ghosts" take on new meaning. I like the way that the wrecks in the yard where I photographed 'portraits' back then are reflected in the chrome.

Anyway that allows me to segue nicely into today's piece featuring a young lady doing her bit to get us back to top place. It's laser cut on wood then hand painted and features Revlon's snappy marketing line that fits so nicely and a little snippet from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's 'White Lines'. Once you've added a bit of crystal resin with some diamond dust glitter in then you're good to go with another certified id-iom piece.

While the Obama White House celebrated the US Supreme Court decision in favor of its health care bill, several hundred people gathered in front of Downstate public hospital in Brooklyn to protest plans to lay off over 1000 doctors and health care workers or close the hospital entirely. The hospital, serves a predominately low income Black, Latino and Caribbean neighborhood and is one of thousands of hospitals in minority communities closed or downsized in recent years. last year Downstate treated nearly half a million patients. It was a reminder that the gap between the reality and the political hype surrounding access to health care for low income communities is wide - and getting wider

I am sorry that I have not been around much lately. The past several months have been difficult for me. I have worked for the same organization for the past 13 years. Recently, the agency has had some severe financial issues. I had to lay off several staff members; people that I have known and worked with, in some cases, for the entire 13 years that I have been there. Then, I was told that I might also not have a position anymore. So, I started to job hunt. Thank goodness I was able to find a new position which I am hoping to start in about a week. So, here are to new beginnings and springing ahead! Hope you have all been well. I have missed your photostreams and will be visiting soon!
