This splendid stone-built three-road through running shed at Lauda was really quite unusual as German steam sheds went and, despite the delightful fluted doorways, could have passed off as a UK shed in its own right. Standing outside in the pouring rain on 19th May 1972 ready for its next passenger turn was DB 2-6-2 023 027-6. The 2-6-2s of class 23 were introduced in 1950 and were built in the years up to 1959, when No.23 105 was completed, the last steam locomotive built for DB. The final Class 23 survivor was withdrawn in 1975.

Also known as the Long Beach (California) Grand Prix. This year was the first time that Formula One cars competed in the race.
This is the Ferrari 312T driven by Niki Lauda, the last race in which the tall air boxes were allowed. This was before Lauda's fiery accident at the Nürburgring later that season.
The 1976 Formula One season is the one featured in Ron Howard's movie Rush. View that movie for the details of what happened.

In 1976 Niki Lauda crashed badly at the German Grand Prix at Nürburgring and almost died (he received the last rites in hospital). At the end of that year we moved to Germany and racing enthusiast friends asked if they could come and stay and we could all go to the 1977 German Grand Prix which had been moved to Hockenheim, about an hour south of us.
From our seats there was little to see due to a huge Ferrari flag being waved by fans and there was certainly no opportunity to use panning to photograph any cars, but I was rather pleased with the photo of the flag - it summed up the atmosphere of Niki Lauda's return to the German GP and winning it.
The difference in exposure between the flag and the background was marked and with digitisation the picture no longer worked, all but the distant tree line appeared bleached out. The picture languished. Niki Lauda passed away this May, and recalling I had this picture, I used GIMP to selectively reduce the exposure of the background and adjust colour saturation levels to squeeze out every pixel. It's far from perfect (or good, even) but brings back the memory of that time.

I was ecstatic to read that Lauda Air would be operating the Ryanair flight from PMI-NCL for summer 2020, unfortunately due to Covid that never came to be. Thankfully Ryanair scheduled Lauda to operate the saturday and sunday flights for the last two weeks of the season before it reduces frequencies and returns to the standard 737 equipment.
