A 2001 installed bronze sculpture "Numbers are the Language of Nature" on Domain Walk in Auckland Domain.

The sculpture is by Italian born artist Chiara Corbelletto, a graduate of Modigliani Art School, Novara, in 1973 and gained a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Milan, 1979.

In 1981 Corbelletto moved to New Zealand.

For this sculpture Corbelletto used the concept of tessellation, a pattern created by repeating a shape over a surface.

Corbelletto fashioned a three dimensional form made up of twenty identical bronze modules.

I was going to translate it, but I'll leave the fun up to you ;)

I went to a memorial service today which was a real bummer. I've never been to a funeral for someone younger than myself and it was such a strange feeling, our lives are so delicate and can be taken so quickly. It can be difficult working in the supportive field because you care so deeply for so many people, it's hard to let it all go when the time comes.

I use 'sign' every day at my current job and it's become so much a part of my daily communication that I sometimes don't even realize that I'm doing it. Last night while at the grocery store, I had called down the aisle to Scott and when he didn't understand what I was saying, I signed it out....which only made things more complicated...sometimes I even sign to complete strangers, most often it's "thank you". It's amazing how quickly new skills can become habit.

From yesterday evening at the cabin. This storm cell blew in during sunset. These prairie storms can be impressive, but this one left us with only a few drops of rain. We cleaned up the yard, and closed up the windows. Then I hung out on the dock to watch and take photos.

Storms and skies like this make me realize just how small we actually are.

Also part of my figurative language set. Both of them go with the same idiom in my mind. A term we use when feeling a little ill. I'll retitle the pictures in a couple of days with the idiom, but feel free to guess in the mean time.

Lightshow on barque Passat, Travemünde Week 2019

"Passat is a German four-masted steel barque and one of the Flying P-Liners, the famous sailing ships of the German shipping company F. Laeisz. She is one of the last surviving windjammers. (The name "Passat" is German for trade wind.)

Passat was launched in 1911 at the Blohm & Voss shipyard, Hamburg. She began her maiden voyage on Christmas Eve 1911 toward Cape Horn and the nitrate ports of Chile. She was used for decades to ship general cargo outbound and nitrate home. [...]

In 1957, a few weeks after the tragic loss of Pamir in mid-Atlantic and shortly after having been severely hit by a storm, Passat was decommissioned. She had almost experienced the same fate as the Pamir when her loose barley cargo shifted.

Passat was purchased in 1959 by the Baltic Sea municipality of Lübeck and is now a youth hostel, venue, museum ship, and landmark moored at Travemünde, a borough of Lübeck in the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. [...]"

back to the worms I (selfportrait)

Today was a busy photography day, in the best way of course! It was so busy that this was the only time I actually had to sit and put something together for my own 365, all the other work is top secret (for now!).

The last few weeks have been both amazing and difficult at the same time, I've been fortunate enough to have been featured on some fairly popular blogs which has given me a whole new set of opportunities and offers and I'm excited about these new doors opening up, at the same time however, I've been feeling my own personal creativity and inspiration severely lacking which is making things a tad unbalanced in my own head. I'm hoping it's just one of those fleeting bouts of non-inspiration.....

Lehde (Lědy in the local Sorbian language) is a village situated near Lübbenau and meawhile integrated into that town. While Lehde had 298 inhabitants in 1929, only 150 people still live here (as of 2017). The place is a village consisting of many small islands. For centuries, until the early 1950s, Lehde could only be reached by water. Even today, practically all plots of land have their own access to one of the many canals between 0.8 and 1 meter deep, which largely have the function of roads. Postal deliveries and waste collection still take place by water. During the winter months, however, mail is delivered to mailboxes set up by the residents on the landside, by mail bike or car.

Due to the unusual location of Lehde and some preserved historical Spreewald houses, Lehde, which is completely under monumental protection, is a popular destination for tourists. Lehde can also be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car, however, the beauty and special features of the place can be experienced above all from the water side. (Wikpedia.de)

The Spreewald (German for 'Spree Forest'; in Lower Sorbian: Błota, i.e. 'the Swamps') is a section of the German state of Brandenburg located about 100 km sou It is known for its traditional irrigation system, consisting of more than 200 small canals (called Fließe; total length: 1,300 kilometres or 810 miles) within the 484-square-kilometre (187 sq mi) area. The landscape was shaped during the last Ice Age. About 50,000 people live in the biosphere reserve (1998). Many of them are descendants of the first settlers in the Spreewald region, the Slavic tribes of the Sorbs and Wends. They have preserved their traditional language, customs and clothing to this day.

Most inhabitants depend on tourism. Many tourists explore the Spreewald in punts. Agriculture, forestry and fishery are other important sources of income. The principal town of the area is Lübbenau. Alder forests on wetlands and pine forests on sandy dry areas are characteristic of the Spreewald region. Grasslands and fields can be found as well. About 18,000 species of flora and fauna have been identified. In 1991, the Spreewald was protected by the UNESCO under its Man and Biosphere Reserve Programme.

Helgoland is a German island in the North Sea. In the past, the island has been part of Denmark and the United Kingdom, but since 1890 it has been German property. It is considerably further away from the coast than the East Frisian Islands. Strangely enough, it is not part of the customs territory of the European Community. On Helgoland, Halunder freesk is spoken, a North Frisian language. The main island, with the recognizable cliff of Trias fur sandstone, which is subdivided into Oberland and Unterland. The small island of Düne is mainly covered with sand and popular with nudists. There is an airport on Düne and there are two bungalow parks. Helgoland is traffic-free: there are only a few cars, and cycling is prohibited. There is a small bus that makes a tour around the island. There are also some electric vehicles that serve as vans. Helgoland can be reached by high-speed catamaran, ferry or by small propeller plane. The island enjoys considerable fame among nature and especially bird lovers because it is an important breeding ground and stopping place for sea birds from the North Sea region and for migratory birds. The Northern Gannet is a seabird living at the coasts of the North Sea. Colonies are mostly located on offshore islands with cliffs, from which the birds can more easily launch into the air. Gannets breed here on the cliffs of Helgoland in the summer. The birds overwinter at sea and are known to follow ships. They dive for fish in a spectacular way and can do that at a speed of 100 km/hour if they drop.

The unique island Helgoland in the North Sea has great flora and fauna for nature lovers. The most preferred way of strolling around the island is by walking. At the northern end of the Oberland you can see "Lange Anna" a landmark of Helgoland. Lange Anna is a tall 47 metres high sea stack of Buntsandstein. Its real local name is Nathurn Stak. Climbing the stack is not allowed but tourists may view the rock from a distance. Northern Gannets started breeding on the German island Helgoland about 25 years ago. The colony, nowadays holding about 700 breeding pairs, birds annually die on the nest. Gannets build their nests on steep cliff faces. They used seaweed to construct the nest. Northern gannets exhibit many types of aggressive behavior while they are nesting. Confrontations normally only take place between birds of the same sex. A female will not react if a male approaches a nest but it will react fiercely if another female approaches. The fights between males occupying nests for the first time are particularly intense. Such fights can last for up to two hours and may lead to serious injuries. Birds lunge at each other and lock bills, wrestling for extended periods while neighbors peck at them. This shot was taken during the breeding season at the Breithorn rock.

A nice multiview postcard, my first one from Brno! It looks like a city worth visiting. The postcard is in Czech language. Ahoj, Blanka! ;)

Access cover of a water main in Uster, Switzerland. Switzerland is a multilingual country.

Oranjestad is the capital and largest city of Aruba. Oranjestad is located on the southern coast near the western end of the island country. In the local language, Papiamento, Oranjestad is often referred to simply as "Playa". As of 2015, the population of the capital was around 35,000.

The town was built around Fort Zoutman shortly after it was built in 1796. Initially, the town had no official name, being known only as the town on the Bay of Horses (Paardenbaai in Dutch), a place from which native-bred[citation needed] horses were raised and exported to neighboring Curaçao. The town has ever since been the capital city of the island.

The city is named after the first King William I of the Netherlands. The name was conferred on the city in the 1820s when interest in Aruba increased due to the discovery of (alluvial) gold deposits.

Air Aruba once had its headquarters in Oranjestad. Air Aruba suspended its operations on October 23, 2000.

Tiara Air has had its head office in Oranjestad since 2006, except between 2014 and 2016 when the company suspended services due to the Venezuelan Airline Crisis.

Aruba is an island and a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the southern Caribbean Sea, located about 1,600 kilometres (990 mi) west of the main part of the Lesser Antilles and 29 kilometres (18 mi)[5] north of the coast of Venezuela. It measures 32 kilometres (20 mi) long from its northwestern to its southeastern end and 10 kilometres (6 mi) across at its widest point. Together with Bonaire and Curaçao, Aruba forms a group referred to as the ABC islands. Collectively, Aruba and the other Dutch islands in the Caribbean are often called the Dutch Caribbean.

Aruba is one of the four countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with the Netherlands, Curaçao, and Saint Maarten; the citizens of these countries are all Dutch nationals. Aruba has no administrative subdivisions, but, for census purposes, is divided into eight regions. Its capital is Oranjestad.

Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm, sunny weather. It has a land area of 179 km2 (69.1 sq mi) and is densely populated, with a total of 102,484 inhabitants at the 2010 Census. Current estimates of the population place it at 116,600 (July 2018 est.) It island lies outside Hurricane Alley.
