John Ray wrote the first proper bird book in the English language in 1678 (though he published the same work in Latin two years earlier). There were earlier books that referenced birds, often with a more general natural history theme, but Ray's was the first devoted to birds. In this first bird book Ray gave three names to this species; "The common Barn-Owl, or White-Owl, or Church-Owl". So one name referred to its unique owl colour, and two referred to its habitat preferences. Interestingly Ray gave the name "Ivy-Owl" as an alternative to our Tawny Owl, and I usually find them roosting in Ivy. The next major work on birds was Thomas Pennant in 1768, though it was a more general work on Zoology. Pennant coined the term warbler used for so many of our birds, and he often led the way for the selection of the accepted British name. But Pennant backed the wrong horse in this instance and chose White Owl. Later authors were reluctant to lose Barn Owl and often kept both names, such as William Yarrell in 1843. He listed both names but in his text showed a clear preference for Barn Owl, and the BOU officially adopted Barn Owl in 1883. So that is why a bird that nests freely in holes in trees, nest boxes on posts, and a variety of old buildings, has become linked to barns. Before I leave the names, the name Screech Owl was widely used and pre-dates Ray as it was first used in 1593. And Barn Owl does indeed screech. I photographed this hunting Barn Owl recently not far from my home while I was out for an afternoon walk. It was hunting over an abandoned grass field. You can see by the bramble over the wall that the field hasn't been used for some time.

In the Royal Palace of Madrid, some street lamps ("farolas" in Spanish language) with symbolic decoration have been restored.
Here you can see one of them, in the Plaza de la Armería, where you can see several crowns, a fleur-de-lis and some pine cones.
The fleur-de-lis is a symbol that takes us back to ancient times with the mythical King Solomon and the no less mythical Queen of Sheba.
It is considered a symbol of royalty, found on the coats of arms of several royal dynasties, such as the Bourbon dynasty, which continues to rule in Spain and others.
The fleur-de-lis is part of the coat of arms of several cities, such as Paris, Darmstadt, Elda, Lincoln (UK) or Wiesbaden.
In some cases it is also considered a religious symbol, representing the Virgin Mary and the religious military order of Santiago. And it is part of the coats of arms of the families of several Popes.
It is also considered an alchemical and Masonic symbol.
It even appears in some mafia (mob) organizations: it was adopted by the Hachel Mafia, known as the Virgin Escribana, as an emblem in the 17th century.
In Germany, more specifically in the municipality of Hachelbich, their meetings were held.
Any person not affiliated with the Hachel Mafia who tried to stop them from achieving their goals ended up brutally murdered.

Aquí se puede ver una de ellas, en plena Plaza de la Armería en la que se pueden ver varias coronas, una flor de lis y algunas piñas.
La flor de lis es un símbolo que nos lleva a tiempos ancestrales con el mítico rey Salomón y la no menos mítica reina de Saba.
Se considera un símbolo de realeza, que se encuentra en los escudos de varias dinastías reales, como la dinastía borbónica, que sigue gobernando en España y otras.
La flor de lis forma parte del escudo de varias ciudades, como París, Darmstadt, Elda, Lincoln (UK) or Wiesbaden.
En algunos casos también se considera un símbolo religioso, que representa a la Virgen María y a la orden religioso militar de Santiago. Y forma parte de los escudos de las familias de varios Papas.

Is mathematics the language of the universe?
I find it neat that many plants (haha, but not all!) follow a mathematical rule called the "Golden Ratio" when they grow. Using this ratio (and a numbering sequence attributed to Fibonacci but known in India for hundreds of years before), each petal is able to get the maximum amount of sunlight it possibly can. Next time you see a sunflower, take a close look - its growth pattern can be described using mathematics!

Orchid Island (Yami language: Ponso no Tao or Pongso no Tao; traditional Chinese: 蘭嶼; pinyin: Lán Yǔ; POJ: Lân-sū) is a 45-km² volcanic island off the southeastern coast of Taiwan island and separated from the Batanes of the Philippines by the Bashi Channel of the Luzon Strait. It is governed as Lanyu Township of Taitung County, Republic of China (Taiwan). The island is home to the Tao, an ethnic minority group who migrated to the island from the Batan Archipelago 800 years ago. The island is known to them as Ponso no Tao or Pongso no Tawo (island of the people) or Irala. The island is also known as Botel Tobago.

This lovely woman is Chrystal, who has tried to teach me American Sign Language (sadly Canadians use American sign) for the last two semesters. She is a lovely, bright and funny woman. When she was a little girl, the doctors told her parents she was retarded because of her inability to speak. I'd say perhaps they were the ones with the problem. Turns out she was only operating with 15 % of her hearing. Since then, she has lost it all. She uses a cochlear implant to hear and is fluent in sign as well as an excellent lip reader.
Tonight I write my final exam for Level 2. I've been reviewing so long I'm getting cross-eyed, or cross-fingered more accurately. The end of this class means I get a certificate. Yee haw!

Encounter, part 2. This is the same cinnamon Black Bear seen in yesterday's post. Its body language is very different. It takes a worried bear to give me a look like that. Interesting comparison, I think.
After I'd been working with it alone for 15 minutes or so and this bear had accepted me as non-threatening, along came a couple of tourists in their car. There was a slight bend in the road behind me, where my car was, about 50 feet away and slightly to the right. Instead of pulling up directly behind me, they stopped 75 feet short, triangulating the bear. Behind the bear was a mountain wall.
Its stress level went straight up. Ears back, fear in its eyes. I began talking to it in a soft voice and slowly backing up, trying not to trip over roots and branches, while it considered possible options. And all ended well, as I was able to give it a clear escape path, which it took.
Then I walked over and had a little talk with the tourists. I was calm. You can't teach people by yelling at them. I told them they had created a dangerous situation for me, and why: "You effectively surrounded the bear, and that put me at risk."
Of course, I knew from the start this might happen. I had my own escape route in mind all along. After a few minutes with this bear, I was pretty sure we could read each other and no one would get his nose out of joint. But tourists always increase the danger level, because "reading" wildlife is a foreign concept to them and they unwittingly do dumb things. I'd much rather photograph bears in the back country.

Mount Merapi, Gunung Merapi in Indonesian language, is a conical volcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. Its name means Mountain of Fire. It is very close to the city of Yogyakarta, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano.
Although smoke can be seen emerging from the mountain top at least 300 days a year, several eruptions have caused fatalities. Hot gas from a large explosion killed 43 people in 1994, mostly in the town of Muntilan, west of the volcano. Another large eruption occurred in 2006, shortly before the Yogyakarta earthquake. In light of the hazards that Merapi poses to populated areas, it has been designated as one of the Decade Volcanoes.
In April 2006, increased seismicity at more regular intervals and a detected bulge in the volcano's cone indicated that fresh eruptions were imminent. Authorities put the volcano's neighboring villages on high alert and local residents prepared for a likely evacuation. On April 19 smoke from the crater reached a height of 400 metres, compared to 75 metres the previous day. On April 23, after nine surface tremors and some 156 multifaced quakes signalled movements of magma, some 600 elderly and infant residents of the slopes were evacuated.
By early May, active lava flows had begun. On May 11, with lava flow beginning to be constant, some 17,000 people were ordered to be evacuated from the area and on May 13, Indonesian authorities raised the alert status to the highest level, ordering the immediate evacuation of all residents on the mountain. Many villagers defied the dangers posed by the volcano and returned to their villages, fearing that their livestock and crops would be vulnerable to theft. Activity calmed by the middle of May.
On May 27, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck roughly 30 miles southwest of Merapi, killing at least 5,000 and leaving at least 200,000 people homeless in the Yogyakarta region, heightening fears that Merapi will blow The quake did not appear to be a long-period oscillation, a seismic disturbance class that is increasingly associated with major volcanic eruptions. A further 11,000 villagers were evacuated on June 6 as lava and superheated clouds of gas poured repeatedly down its upper slopes. The pyroclastic flows are known locally as wedhus gembel (Javanese for shaggy goat).
Completed in 1873 the Hall of Languages is the oldest building at Syracuse University. For 14 years it was the university's only building.
It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), the name of this butterfly in North America, is called Camberwell Beauty in the British Isles. Other names are Grand Surprise and White Petticoat.
In several other European countries with Germanic languages is the name for this butterfly literally translates to "Mourning Cloak", such as in German "Trauermantel" and in Dutch "Rouwmantel".
The mourning cloak is found throughout most of North America and Europe and in a broad band across central Asia. The butterfly is one of the most widespread butterflies, but it is a rare migrant to the British Isles. They can usually be found in hardwood forests, though they have been found in virtually all habitats.
Mourning cloaks are medium-sized butterflies with a wingspan of 6-10 cm. The upper surface of the wings are purple brown or maroon coloration, with pale beige to yellow coloured edges and blue spots. They are easy to identify. The underside of the wings are blackish brown with lighter beige to brown edges. The species does not display any sexual dimorphism.
The Mourning Cloak enjoys a long life span of ten to eleven months. The adult butterflies hibernate in the winter and mate in the spring.
De rouwmantel of koningsmantel (Nymphalis antiopa) heeft een enorm verspreidingsgebied en komt voor in Noord-Amerika, Europa, en een groot deel van centraal Azië tot in Japan.
Vroeger was deze dagvlinder hier een standvlinder, maar in West Europa en op de Britse Eilanden is de rouwmantel tegenwoordig echter vooral een regelmatige dwaalgast. In 1995 en 2006 vonden er vanuit Midden Europa invasies plaats met enorme aantallen rouwmantels verspreid over Nederland en België.
De rouwmantel heeft open loof- en naaldbossen als leefgebied, maar komt ook in parken en cultuurlandschapen voor.
De gemakkelijk te herkennen rouwmantels zijn middelgrote vlinders met een vleugelspanwijdte van 6 à 10 cm. De bovenkant van de vleugels zijn paarsbruin of kastanjebruin van kleur, met beige tot geel gekleurde randen en blauwe vlekken. De onderzijde van de vleugels zijn zwartachtig bruin met lichtere beige tot bruine randen. De geslachten zien er gelijk uit, maar de vrouwtjes zijn iets groter.
De rouwmantel heeft een lange levensverwachting van 10 à 11 maanden. Ze overwinteren als vlinder en paren in het voorjaar.

This planet seems good. One species seem to be so populous they have infiltrated every continent. They do have some rudimentary language skills but their mathematic ability is so basic they would never be considered an intelligent species. Atmosphere is very similar to ours with minimal terra and bioforming needed making it cheap to colonize.
The fingers quickly tapped the device sending a communication to corporate headquarters that they could apply to the commission to colonize earth with a high degree of probability of being approved.
Within a decade the ships started arriving. Humans objected to being colonized and threw every nuclear weapon they could scrap up. The colonizers retreated back to orbit, baffled by a species intelligent enough to create a bomb that could destroy the atmosphere and stupid enough to deploy it. The colonizers requested equipment to cleanse the atmosphere which was an extra expense. By the time they received approval and the equipment, all life forms on earth were dead except for cockroaches.
The colony shipped in fauna and flora from their original planet. It was much better really. Normally it was very difficult to get permission to make a planet exactly like home. There were groups that fought for planetary diversity but really it wasn't the colonizers' fault the original species killed themselves and almost everything else.
No one was happy about the cockroaches tho. Not even the groups for planetary diversity as cockroaches spread quickly across the galaxies once a few managed to get aboard ships. Major funding was approved to eradicate them. Nothing worked. The cockroaches kept surviving and coming back. Very irritating.

Note: I added texture and the aqua lighting on the right through Photoshop. For the texture, I used NightCafe to create an image with two planets on one layer and then used the SoftLight filter in PS at 40% opacity. The aqua lighting I brushed two circles of aqua, then Guassian Filter to spread them out, then Vivid Light filters at differing opacity for each circle.

October = LISTOPAD in the Croatian language means 'the month of falling leaves'
[LIST: 'leaf' + PAD: 'fall' = LISTOPAD: 'leaf-fall'].
The month of October was also called LISTOPAD in the old Macedonian (Листопад)
as well as old Bulgarian (Листопад). The month's name LISTOPAD exists or existed
in several other Slavic languages: Polish (Listopad), Czech (Listopad), old Slovenian (Listopad), Ukrainian (Листопад), and Byelarusian (Листопад). However in the latter
five languages the term LISTOPAD refers to the month of November. This is probably
due to differences in climate.
On the other hand, October is called "VINOTOK" [VINO: 'wine' + TOK: 'flow' = "the wine flowing month"] in the archaic Slovenian language, "ZHOVTEN" [ZHOVTIY: 'yellow' color = month when leaves turn yellow] in Ukrainian (Жовтень), and "KASTRYCHNIK" [KOSTER: 'bonfire' = month when leaves turn colour of fire] in Byelarusian (Кастрычнiк). These two languages call October the "mud month" - Finnish (Lokakuu) and Carelian (Ligakuu).

The city took its name from the hill. Mandalay Hill is known for its abundance of pagodas and monasteries, and has been a major pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists for nearly two centuries. At the top of the hill is the Sutaungpyei iterally wish-fulfilling Pagoda. A panoramic view of Mandalay from the top of Mandalay Hill alone makes it worthwhile to attempt a climb up its stairways. To get a sense of Mandalay’s pancake-flat sprawl, climb the 240 metres hill that breaks it. The barefooted walk up covered stairways on the hill's southern slope is a major part of the experience passing through and around a colourful succession of prayer and shopping opportunities. The climb takes a good 30 minutes, but much longer if you allow for stops en route. The summit viewpoint is especially popular at sunset when young monks converge on foreigners for language practice.
Just outside the North of downtown, Mandalay Hill which summit is 240 m above the surrounding plain is the natural watch-tower for the visitors to watch sunrise or sunset over the city plains. Every one who arrived in Mandalay, the ancient capital of Myanmar, usually goes to Mandalay Hill, the landmark of Mandalay, which overlooks the city.

Daarnaast is een beklimming van de Mandalay Hill, vlak voor zonsondergang een unieke ervaring. Via een trap van meer dan 1700 treden is deze beklimming een ware uitdaging, maar de beloning is groot. Vanaf dit hoge punt heeft u een uitmuntend uitzicht heeft over het landschap, waartussen de Irrawaddy rivier zich een weg kronkelt.
