Today is a good day of mine, hunting for photos.

Christmas is the best time of the year, and it is important to see how other cultures celebrate this special holiday. The World Language Trip took a trip to a German Christmas Village in Love Park in Philadelphia. Students were able to watch a glass-blowing demonstration, and paint their own ornaments. Afterwards, students shopped the village and ate German sausages while learning about the culture.
Student Jessica Ruble (Grade 12) says, "I didn't have German as a language so it was really fun walking around, shopping, and looking at German crafts. I really enjoyed what the village offered to give people a better understanding of the culture."
Students could learn more about the culture by doing a scavenger hunt that involved answering questions about German culture. Some questions involved how long German festivals lasted in Germany.
" I liked being able to shop and talking tot he shop keepers about the German customs. Apparently, the christmas villages in Germany begin on December 1st and last for about 4 weeks", says Jessie Ruble.
There truly was something for everybody at the German Christmas Village in Philadelphia. For some people it was the food, others the shopping, and some the glassblowing.
" My favorite part was the glass blowing. I made two ornaments for my younger brothers!"
The German village is still open until December 24th at Love Park in Philadelphia. Christmas is the best time of the year, so the village is a great way to celebrate the holidays with family and friends! Happy holidays!

I fell in love with real garlic when I was stationed at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California after I was commissioned an Army lieutenant after graduating from Texas A&M. There was an annual Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California that I attended.
Before being educated about garlic, I assumed, “garlic is garlic.” However, garlic is like apples or oranges — there are dozens and dozens of varieties. At the festival, I tasted raw garlic, roasted garlic, garlic candy, garlic beer, garlic wine, garlic bread, etc…
My favorite way of consuming garlic is when it’s roasted. I can stand in the kitchen and eat it right out of the oven with nothing else but a glass of bourbon. When I was stationed in/working in New Jersey, a good Italian restaurant would bring out freshly baked Italian bread on a tray with butter and a bowl of just roasted garlic bulbs.
I wasn’t roasting garlic very often because you had to preheat the oven, dirty a baking pan, and heat up the kitchen. Things have changed now that I have an air fryer!
With the air fryer, all I had to do was cut off the tops of some garlic cloves, place them in the fryer, pour some olive oil and salt over them, and “let ‘er rip!”
When the garlic is roasted, the top of the cloves are caramelized and the smell is delicious. For my first air fryer garlic experience, I stood there, bourbon in hand, and ate the first batch all by itself. As it was so easy to roast using the air fryer, I made a second batch. I muddled the garlic using the muddling stick I use when I make bourbon old fashions. I folded the garlic into some softened butter with some Italian herbs de province. I shall be using this concoction to garnish a flank steak I’m going to be cooking within the next 24 hours.
I remember when I was first stationed on the Jersey Shore, every Italian restaurant or pizza parlor used an abundance of garlic. When I showered, I noticed my body, especially my hands, smelled of strong garlic. I don’t smell it anymore. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve become used to the smell, or if when you consume lots of garlic on a daily basis, your body processes it better.

The reason for only partially covering with yellow petals and bright pink fabric....I was going for a situation which compares wordlessness for language and too much emphasis to be on the spoken stuff. The plants, even tha fabior, puts its emphasis on the wide open spaces surrounding the words.
