I've now uploaded the recording of Sunday's discussion about 'Second Life - Language and Culture'
Please join the 'Language and Culture Exchange' group in Second Life if you are interested in following up what was discussed.
I found this book in my father's book shelf. I found it really interesting. It may help people understand the real history of east asia, from people's side , not from the side of rulers. Taiwanese or Ho-loc-weei, was spoken in the central part of China thousand years ago , this language along with the people using the language move to the southeastern cornor of mainland china , Taiwan, Japan, vietnan, thailand, Philipines , Malaysia, etc , and created a marine business empire for hundred years ,yet not popularly known to most people. Through study of Ho-loc-weei, using your free association as you travel in these countries, you may find lots of interesting connections.

A statue of Irish language writer Pádraic Ó Conaire was erected in the memory in 1935. He now resides in the City Museum and cuts a rather lonely figure there. His removal was not without controversy. However, it should be noted that he was wearing away a little (not to mention a short separation from his head - www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/1999/0422/9904220000...

If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. -John 8:31
In his book on language, British diplomat Lancelot Oliphant (1881–1965) observed that many students give correct answers on tests but fail to put those lessons into practice. “Such undigested knowledge is of little use,” declared Oliphant.
Author Barnabas Piper noticed a parallel in his own life: “I thought I was close to God because I knew all the answers,” he said, “but I had fooled myself into thinking that was the same as relationship with Jesus.”
Faith is not accepting the fact of God but receiving the life of God.
At the temple one day, Jesus encountered people who thought they had all the right answers. They were proudly proclaiming their status as Abraham’s descendants yet refused to believe in God’s Son.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did” (John 8:39). And what was that? Abraham “believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness” (Gen. 15:6). Still, Jesus’ hearers refused to believe. “The only Father we have is God himself,” they said (John 8:41). Jesus replied, “Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God” (v. 47).
Piper recalls how things “fell apart” for him before he “encountered God’s grace and the person of Jesus in a profound way.” When we allow God’s truth to transform our lives, we gain much more than the right answer. We introduce the world to Jesus.
Father, thank You that You receive anyone who turns to You in faith.
Faith is not accepting the fact of God but of receiving the life of God.

When Colfax was new, back before motor cars and liquor prohibition, rich people lived here and shopped in Rodeo Drive like boutiques. Then the interstate came, and cross-country travelers drove AROUND Denver instead of through it. Now you can get any kind of product or service you'd like, except for the legal ones. I'm going to take some manicured pictures of parks and lawns too, just to balance it out.
Arabic language celebrated today as a symbol of unity and diversity
Baghdad, 18 December 2015 – Arabic, the language of religion, science and literature, was celebrated at an event organized in observation of World Arabic Language Day in the prestigious Sami Abdel Hameed Theatre located in the heart of the Al Mutanabi Street in Baghdad today, in the presence of artists, intellectuals, linguists and representatives of many national and international institutions, including the Ministry of Culture, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and UNESCO.
The event comes a week after Baghdad was designated as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of literature. Baghdad’s designation to the list recognizes the importance of the past and present intellectual and literary life of the city.
“Among all the contributions that Arab people gave to the universal human civilization, the Arabic language reigns supreme,” said Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) Gyorgy Busztin. “Arabic is one of the major languages not only on account of the Holy Qur’an, but also on account of the role it played in building and sustaining human civilization. Much of the heritage of antiquity survived thanks to medieval Arab scholars. Their contributions in various fields form the basis of modern science, and all that came to us in the Arabic language. Arabic therefore deserves to be celebrated as a language that contributed greatly to shaping our world”, added DSRSG Busztin.
Axel Plathe, Director of UNESCO Office for Iraq described the Arabic language as a “symbol of unity in diversity as it enables millions of men and women to make their voices heard and build cultural ties beyond physical borders”. He added: “Today, we pay tribute to Arabic and the great role that it has played over hundreds of years in the flow of knowledge on so many subjects ranging from philosophy to literature, from medicine to psychology, from astronomy to mathematics.”
This year, World Arabic Language Day is dedicated to science and scientific communication. The celebration aimed at highlighting the historical role of the Arabic language in research and the dissemination of knowledge, and the importance of multilingualism for the research community today.
The celebration, also attended by the Deputy Minister of Culture included panel discussions on the intersections of the Arabic language with the sciences, poetry, calligraphy and other topics.
Al Mutanabi Street, Iraq’s literary district, is where language and literary meet and where a cultural community has flourished for years. The unique street plays a crucial role in the cultural life and the constant revival of Arabic language and literature. Dating back to the 8th century, Al Mutanabi Street was a refuge for writers and authors of all religious and ethnic backgrounds. The street was a symbol of diversity and unity, emblematic of the day’s celebration
World Arabic Language Day was established by a decision of UNESCO’s Executive Board in 2012. The initiative, proposed by Morocco and Saudi Arabia, seeks to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity, as well as celebrate Arabic language’s role in and contribution to the safeguarding and dissemination of human civilization and culture.

The police language students at Sekolah Bahasa Polri (The Police Language School) in Jakarta, Indonesia hosted a “Multicultural Day” for special guests from France, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and an English Language Fellow from the United States. The Chief of Sebasa opened the ceremony and welcomed the guests to event. Each class researched a country where their language of study is widely spoken. They created booths to display cultural artifacts, including food, music, fashion, and iconic symbols to represent the country. After guests and students visited cultural booths, the classes performed skits, songs, and fashion shows demonstrating their cultural understanding.

I am the last advocate for reducing texts, scriptures and languages to mere graphic forms. The whole dimension of the text's meaning, histories, combinations, connotations, sound and craft is disregarded. What is more problematic is that I am ignoring the power of words to move and persuade people.
After first year and my first internship, I felt slightly disillusioned and confused by what Architecture meant to me. I took a trip to Myanmar and the trip recalibrated a lot things. I found it particularly grounding and inspiring for some of the things that I want to achieve in the future.
The spatial and formal organisation of the Burmese language in signage was something I found very compelling. At least with the handwritten texts, so much thought and effort was put into crafting every character. You see pencil marks, underlays, brush strokes and outlines. There is a combination of type faces and textures to create visual impact in different programmatic contexts that I find fascinating.
The Burmese name for the round script is "ca-lonh", literally translating to "round text". There are 33 main characters in the Myanmar language. Instead of words that are formed by a combination of alphabets (like in English), this language makes use of additional vowel shift symbols, tonal change symbols and consonant modification symbols. The rounded form of the characters is a result of the use of palm laves a the traditional writing material. Straight lines and forms would tear the leaves.
By compiling this, I am exposing my status as alien and an outsider. However, the focus on the visuals may have the inverse effect of celebrating the text, for text's sake, specifically, it is celebrated as visual form and not just a sign that says "eggs", or something.
Regardless, I tried to interpret the scope of "text" in a broad but focused way - text, in its literal form, text in prayer, text in recitation, text in architectural program (the stupas of Kuthodaw Pagoda). Photos are arranged in chronological order. The journey started in Yangon, then upstream along the Ayarwaddy river, to Mandalay and Bagan, then back again to Yangon.
These photos aren't really anything special in terms of photography, and I am not going to attempt to make sweeping claims about directing a new visual order, but as a composite they attempt to represent my yearning to celebrate a culture of appreciation for the process driven intensity in text making and in the creation of form.
