Tribal youth display a message in the Ojibwe language in opposition to a proposed open-pit mine in the Penokee Hills in northern Wisconsin. The problem with Gogebic Taconite's proposed mine is that it is located at the headwaters of the Bad River which flows into Lake Superior, but not before it flows through the Bad River Reservation and rice paddies the tribe have been maintaining for generations. Samples taken at the site have shown the rock to be loaded with sulfide minerals and asbestos. Gogebic Taconite has already started ripping up the land to take their own samples (in massive amounts). The powers that be have also managed to legally bar people from entering the area which is on public land normally reserved for recreation and hunting.

International students are learning Finnish language
Vicenza High School students visit their Italian partner school, Liceo Scientifico Statale G.B. Quadri in Vicenza, Italy, April 18 for a day of expanding language competence and cultural familiarity. Language teachers in both schools have cooperated for more than a decade to build their school exchange program.
VIRTLANTIS is a free resource and open community of practice for language learners and teachers in the virtual world of Second Life®. We offer free informal language learning activities for a growing number of languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, etc. All of our activities are offered free of charge by volunteer language teachers and/or native speakers.
Everyone is welcome to offer a language activity at VIRTLANTIS. We provide free resources and ongoing support. We also collaborate with and promote other language communities in Second Life.
In addition to our main island and the various social meeting points at Knowingly, we have additional locations which can be used when needed.

UW-Madison’s Language Institute hosted World Languages Day on November 7, at Union South. This exciting, college-for-a-day experience introduces more than 600 Wisconsin high school students and their teachers to many of the world languages and cultural topics offered at UW-Madison. The event aims to inspire students to pursue a second or third language regardless of their educational and career goals.

Traveling allowed me to learn a new language. In this picture we see the Greek Guards of the Parliament in Athens. But what I want you to look at is the Greek writing in the background.
When I decided to travel to Europe I knew I was going to Greece. There, not many people speak English in the smaller cities (like in Iraklio), so I decided to learn to speak Greek, although I lost a lot of it now that I no longer practice.
When we travel and need to use another language to be understood and get around, we have no choice but to learn it. I find that putting oneself in such a situation is a great way of learning a new language and the people I met in Greece were more than happy to help me learn.
