Unicode represents the Tower ob Babel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Babel In computing, Unicode is an industry standard allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. Developed in tandem with the Universal Character Set standard and published in book form as The Unicode Standard, Unicode consists of a repertoire of more than 100,000 characters, a set of code charts for visual reference, an encoding methodology and set of standard character encodings, an enumeration of character properties such as upper and lower case, a set of reference data computer files, and a number of related items, such as character properties, rules for normalization, decomposition, collation, rendering and bidirectional display order (for the correct display of text containing both right-to-left scripts, such as Arabic or Hebrew, and left-to-right scripts). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UniCode

A.J. Bocchino collects headlines and photographs from different media sources including the New York Times, The Washington Post and Newsweek. This information is used as data for systems that generate complex drawings and sculptures. His projects are driven by an analysis of the mass media as well as the processes of accumulation, archiving and record keeping. In these particular works, he has excised the main headline from the front page of the New York Times every day for six years: 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933 and 2008. The headlines are listed in chronological order and are color-coded according to subject. This project examines the parallels between the economic collapse of the 1930’s and that of today.

Since the Basque language is unrelated to Indo-European, it is often thought that they represent the people or culture who occupied Europe before the spread of Indo-European languages there.

It is thought that Basques are a remnant of the early inhabitants of Western Europe, specifically those of the Franco-Cantabrian region. Basque tribes were already mentioned in Roman times by Strabo and Pliny, including the Vascones, the Aquitani, and others. There is enough evidence to support that at that time and later they spoke old varieties of the Basque language (see: Aquitanian language).

In the Early Middle Ages (up to 9–10th centuries) the territory between the Ebro and Garonne rivers was known as Vasconia, a blur ethnic area and polity struggling to fend off the pressure of the Iberian Visigothic kingdom and Muslim rule on the south and the Frankish push on the north. A Basque presence is cited on the southern banks of the Loire river too (7–8th centuries). By the turn of the millennium, after Muslim invasions and Frankish expansion under Charlemagne, the territory of Vasconia (to become Gascony) fragmented into different feudal regions, for example, the viscountcies of Soule and Labourd out of former tribal systems and minor realms (County of Vasconia), while south of the Pyrenees the Kingdom of Castile, Kingdom of Pamplona and the Pyrenean counties of Aragon, Sobrarbe, Ribagorza (later merged into the Kingdom of Aragon), and Pallars arose as the main regional powers with Basque population in the ninth century.

The Kingdom of Pamplona (a central Basque realm), later known as Navarre, experienced feudalization and was subjected to the influences of its vaster Aragonese, Castilian and French neighbours, with Castile annexing key western territories of it in the 11th and the twelfth century, so depriving the kingdom of a direct way out to the ocean. Eventually the bulk of the realm would fall to the thrust of Spanish troops from 1512 to 1521 after a civil war. The Navarrese territory north of the Pyrenees remaining out of Spanish rule would end up being formally absorbed to France in 1620.

Nevertheless the Basque provinces enjoyed a great deal of self-government until the French Revolution in the North and the civil wars named Carlist Wars in the South when the Basques supported heir apparent Carlos and his descendants to the cry of "God, Fatherland, King" (Charters abolished). Since then, despite the current limited self-governing status of the Basque Autonomous Community and Navarre as settled by the Spanish Constitution, a significant part of Basque society is still attempting higher degrees of self-empowerment (see Basque nationalism), sometimes by acts of violence.

Mixmag's 6am Girl report on Different Language (HOBO - 13/03/2010)

Wyatt, the black GSD, has a strange attraction towards Ouzo. Every time he sees him, he runs and begs Ouzo to play with him, the only way he knows, by slapping my dog with his paws :) Ouzo tries his best to ignore him, but I believe Wyatt's just not capable of reading subtle signals.

So last Saturday, when this was taken, Ouzo finally had enough of Wyatt and discovered he has teeth that he can show and growl at the young admirer. Unfortunately that didn't make too much of a difference either - maybe gave Wyatt a bit more respect for Ouzo, but he continued to seek his approval and share his affection.

Here he's sniffing (and not sure if not licking) Ouzo's mouth, while my dog just wishes the black dog would freaking go away at leave him alone to play with his frisbee :)

Seems from comments that some of you are not familiar with these little magnetic word kits. I've had them for a long time and given them often as gifts to friends - I took some to China and gave them away to students etc. I've always seen them in large stationery stores. Now I see more elaborate kits and associated stuff online here.
