Working in collaboration with Eric Parry Architects and Latz + Partner, LUC was selected by Saxon Generali Real Estate to design a roof garden at One Fen Court, a new 17-storey mixed-use development at the heart of the City cluster in the City of London.
LUC’s services included planting design, pre-selection and specification, planning and inspection to deliver the soft landscape for the building’s 2,200m2 rooftop terrace. The garden, which is fully accessible to the public, sits 65m above street level and offers 360o views across London’s skyline.
The roof garden is designed to include all the best aspects of a public space whilst integrating building services and energy efficiency requirements. It provides a refreshingly tranquil escape from the dense City cluster and streets below. Our scheme sensitively combines seasonal herbaceous planting with exposure-tolerant and evergreen grasses, vines and espalier fruit. Its centrepiece is a grove of 88 wisteria supported on a pergola, providing shade, scent and shelter to the roof terrace.
As the visitor moves around the garden the quality of light changes with the aspect and the time of day and season. Moving water on the southern edge of the roof provides relief during warm spells.
“It’s gone beyond our expectations, simply because it has a wow factor that we were hoping for but we didn’t dare dream of.” Tina Paillet, Senior Executive at Generali Real Estate
Typically, social, physical, psychological or cultural factors involved in a learning environment deeply affect the learners’ learning capabilities. If the learning atmosphere is not conducive to gaining new knowledge or skills, it will be hard for learners to remain engrossed or interested.
That's how we developed our design thought of " Leadership School for the Arts and Pre-Professionals."

This picture shows the lower part of the garden being constructed using brick walls to create low raised beds and wide open steps up to the middle area. The object of the design is to open the garden out to its full size and allow the owner to navigate around the garden easily and comfortably. The garden is designed bt www.postalgardendesign.co.uk and is built by www.wyldlandscapes.co.uk.
Large multi-trunk tree-form shrubs are used along front walk. Low groundcover eliminates mowing around individual shrubs and in tight spaces. Walk should be wider...especially in its final approach to front porch.
LUC was appointed initially by The Crown Estate in 1996 to investigate the significance and feasibility of restoring The Water Gardens at Bushy Park in West London. Subsequently LUC was retained by a local Trust and later by The Royal Parks to provide a faithful interpretation of the original 1710 Gardens, made safe and accessible for 21st century public enjoyment.
The Water Gardens were created as a series of formal pools in a landscaped setting by the Duke of Halifax in 1710, but their shape and condition had been significantly altered following a variety of occupants and uses over time.
The challenge here was to re-establish a symmetrical layout of ponds and cascade — which had certainly existed — where there was disorder, erosion, invasion of vegetation and severed water supply. This involved extensive historical research, field archaeology and interpretation and ecological investigation. Careful design, challenging discussion and technical construction were necessary to achieve a suitable fit — faithful, respectful and pragmatic — with limited funds.
The Water Gardens stretch across the north-west part of Bushy Park. They use water from the Longford River — an artificial river which was constructed to supply the fountains and basins at Hampton Court. The restoration has returned the ponds to their original shapes (octagonal and clover-leaf), reconstituted the five tier cascade and alcove walls, and provided landform, footpaths, a bridge crossing to the nearby 1710 Brewhouse, seeding, planting and interpretive signage. Most important of all, it has re-established the water supply system from the Longford.
The restored gardens were opened for public access for the first time in Autumn 2009.

Incorporating the existing Coastal Live Oak and the architectural arches and sweeps, this grassland and Oak garden fits in with the surrounding woodlands. The water feature and flowers attract beloved hummingbirds and other wildlife, while the planting is deer resistant. The client relishes the all-season blooms in the side beds, and is soothed by the year-round sway of the ornamental native grass in the central focal area.
The client also wanted to brighten the driveway entrance and mailbox area a bit.

LUC has worked on multiple projects at The Hurlingham Club, providing Landscape Design and Planning services which recently culminated in the completion of the new Racquet Centre.
The careful design of the building and surrounding landscape was crucial to ensure the facility fitted sympathetically into the grounds, within a Conservation Area and Metropolitan Open Land, and met other requirements of the planning authority. We therefore helped the Club organise an architectural design competition which was won by David Morley Architects (DMA).
The building design had to incorporate a number of sustainable features while reducing light pollution and the visual impact of the roof line. Externally it was important find technical solutions to retain the mature London Plane trees and ensure that there would be no net loss of parking spaces or increases in areas of hard landscape.
With the Design and Planning teams working together, LUC submitted a detailed planning application which secured permission and coordinated the related Section 106 agreement.
The project was on site for one year, with LUC novated to the contractor. Regular site visits ensured that external elements were implemented correctly and to a high standard.
The new building fits gracefully into the surrounding landscape with a curving green roof and contemporary brick detailing, matching the quality of the older clubhouse buildings. It provides four high specification indoor tennis and squash courts, a multiple use games area with changing facilities and viewing gallery. Natural daylight and ventilation is utilised whenever possible with lighting and temperature control systems seamlessly integrated.
The building is accessed by a gently sloped path alongside the refurbished external tennis courts and entrance forecourt. It is finished with beech hedges, semi mature trees, shrub planting, reinforced grass parking areas and new paths.
The superb building and much improved facilities are now being enjoyed by members who appreciate the quality of detailing and well executed design.
