A pelican came in for a slow-mo landing. With its large majestic wings fully stretched it hit the brakes.
TRENTONIAN passes the stern of a landing ship discharging men and material to the beach. The ship would drive the bow up onto the beach and just before grounding a large anchor was dropped from the stern. Once unloaded the ship would use a winch to pull itself from the beach towards the anchor. In this photo the anchor chain is visible from the stern of the ship.

It started with a casual conversation at work about unusual names. My mother had a most unusual name. She was one of a dozen kids, 10 of which survived to adulthood. There must have been some deal between my grandparents, because every other kid had a conventional name and every other kid had a weird one. My mom had the strangest of the strange set.
Anyway, that evening at home I googled my mother's name for the first time in quite awhile, and was very surprised to get a hit. It led to a whole family tree, complete with citations.
There were some blanks I had the knowledge to fill in, and a form to contact the site owner. So I did. The very next day, I got a great email response back. And it had a 46 page PDF attachment mapping my mothers ancestors back to the 1500's in England.
45-3/4 pages of this attachment was news to me. One thing I noticed is several names on the list came over very early and landed in Newbury, MA. I also knew there is an organization for descendents of the Newbury first settlers, and a first settlers cemetery and monument. So, with a printout of the PDF, I traveled the short distance to Newbury to poke around.
The first thing I discovered is there is no place to park if you want to visit the first settlers cemetery. But, I figured it's only a mile or so from the Old Town Hill reservation, a place with parking I am familiar with. So I parked there. There is a trail from the summit of the hill I'd never taken before, and I thought it might go down to the cemetery. It actually led to a hayfield. I crossed the hayfield and ended up on pavement on the other side.
I followed the pavement in the direction I knew would lead to the road. The pavement turned out to be a shared driveway that put me on the road almost at the cemetery.
I couldn't find the names I was looking for in the cemetery, but there are a lot of missing stones, unmarked stones, and stones weathered to the point of illegibility.
From the cemetery, I walked the road back to the lower green and went over to the monument. I've actually photographed the lower green before. It has been one of the pictures on my personal web site for several years now. This time, I actually examined it...and I found the names I was looking for.
Now if I forked over a few hundred bucks, filled out a form, and got copies of the documents cited in the web site, I could be a member of the Sons and Daughters of the First Settlers of Newbury sonsanddaughtersofnewbury.org
Those of you who really know me don't need to worry. I'm not going to go all old-money-republican on you.
But, don't be dropping your banana peels on the lower green when you ride through, OK?

Short video of the approach and landing in dublin airport. This is sped up 302%.. dont ask about the extra 2% it just worked.... I was thinking what it would be like if planes actually landed this fast.... it'd be very efficient anyway... Shot on a compact Nikon... 720p HD video, pretty good quality methinks, considering it's out of a dirty scratched double window!

I visited Switzerland for the first time in my life last summer. And I was not disapointed, what a beautiful country with all its big mountains. The only downfall is how expensive it is ;)
Here you see a paraglider coming in to land in Interlaken. It is a very popular sport in this area....

Back to another photo from the 2010 Cumwhinton horse trials, this time a shot of a rider landing after our fence.
Plunging from the snowy sky, these Canada Geese gently landed on frozen lake in the heavy snow. This shot was not set as b/w, but it turned out to be almost b/w. I photoshoped it completely b/w.
