JOHN PICKHAVER from Cornwall was called to a shop to investigate problems with the hot water supply, where he found the water heater had been installed on a staircase landing. The stairs led to an attic room that – at least since the heater had been installed – was only being used for storage. Steps taken were to ensure the door was sealed up and the attic room made accessible via another route. Also, the blow-off pipework was reconfigured correctly.
It seems to me that since my 365 ended I do more flying and less landing in Flickr. I love this web site, it's been my photographic learning ground. I've got to come up with a way to be more consistent without resorting to another 365...

Die Familie der Entenvögel (Anatidae) ist die artenreichste aus der Ordnung der Gänsevögel (Anseriformes). Sie umfasst 47 Gattungen und etwa 150 Arten. Zu dieser Gruppe gehören so bekannte Typen von Wasservögeln wie die Enten, Gänse und Schwäne. Vielleicht abgesehen von den Hühnervögeln hat keine andere Vogelgruppe so zahlreiche Wechselbeziehungen zum Menschen: Allein fünf Arten wurden domestiziert, Entenvögel werden wegen ihres Fleisches, ihrer Eier und ihrer Federn gejagt und gehalten, und in vielerlei Form haben sie Eingang in Märchen, Sagen und Comics erhalten.
Entenvögel sind auf allen Kontinenten mit Ausnahme von Antarktika verbreitet. Sie kommen in allen Klimazonen von der hocharktischen Tundra bis zu den tropischen Regenwäldern vor. Dabei findet man sie an allen Arten von aquatischen Habitaten. Die meisten Arten brüten allerdings am Süßwasser und kommen nur auf dem Zug und im Winter ans Meer; das gilt selbst für die meisten der so genannten Meerenten. Mit der Rostgans und der Streifengans gibt es zwei Arten, die im Gebirge selbst noch in 5000 m Höhe anzutreffen sind.
Während tropische und subtropische Arten meistens Standvögel sind, unternehmen viele Entenvögel der gemäßigten und vor allem der polaren und subpolaren Zonen ausgedehnte Wanderungen. Bekannt sind vor allem die Züge der arktischen Gänse, die mehrere tausend Kilometer zurücklegen, um ihre Winterquartiere zu erreichen.
Man findet unter den Entenvögeln sowohl tag- als auch nachtaktive Arten. Die meisten sind jedoch nicht festgelegt und vor allem in der Dämmerung aktiv. Oft schlafen Entenvögel auf dem Wasser, wobei sie den Kopf unter einen Flügel stecken. Einen großen Teil des Tages verbringen sie mit der Pflege des Gefieders, das mit dem Sekret der Bürzeldrüse regelmäßig eingeölt wird. Auch die nicht tauchenden Arten benetzen ihr Gefieder regelmäßig mit Wasser, indem sie mit den Flügeln heftig auf die Wasseroberfläche schlagen.
Während nur wenige Arten in Kolonien brüten, findet man Entenvögel außerhalb der Brutzeit oft in großen Ansammlungen. Diese können auch mehrere Arten umfassen – so mischen sich Schwimmenten und Tauchenten oft unter andere Arten des gleichen Tribus. Nur drei Arten sind strikte Einzelgänger: die Saumschnabelente, die Blauflügelgans und die Sturzbachente.

I used my real digital camera rather than my VGA "hat cam" to record this nice landing by my instructor Ed, arriving in his Citabria. He wasn't happy because he said it was "tailwheel first" - maybe by one inch! This is what I've been practicing over and over the last few weeks with Ed in this airplane, and recently I've been making some good landings and getting more consistent on my patterns and approaches. Watching this, it sure doesn't LOOK that hard. But it's all about doing the right things at the right time!

Captured through the scratchy window of Cathay Pacific Airways A340, the activities on the wing and engines were quite amazing during our landing. We were landing at Chek Lap Kok Int'l airport, Hong Kong, after a short 2 hour flight from Bangkok.

Lucerne landing was formed by the outwash of Railroad Creek - the largest stream feeding into Lake Chelan. Not only did the Wolverine fire burn through here in 2015, but the stream has been contaminated by a copper mine far up this valley.

The long-awaited return of the ferry service for the Düsseldorf Rhine Fair has hit a significant setback due to severe low water levels in the Rhine River. After a hiatus lasting since 2019, the ferry was highly anticipated to connect the Old Town (Altstadt) directly to the festival grounds, offering a scenic alternative to crowded buses and streetcars. However, an intense summer dry spell caused the river's gauge to drop dramatically to around 40 centimeters, rendering immediate operations at the fairgrounds impossible.
The primary issue preventing vessels from using the blue landing bridge is the high risk of running aground. Because the water is so shallow, even empty boats attempting to approach the dock risk striking the rocky gravel bed along the shore. Consequently, the planned launch for the opening day of the fair had to be called off because a safe docking and boarding process for passengers could not be guaranteed under these conditions.
To resolve the issue and make the landing bridge usable, operators have deployed an excavator directly into the river. The heavy machinery is actively working next to the structure to dredge a deeper navigational channel through the shallow gravel. By carving out these underwater obstructions, workers hope to create just enough depth for the boats to safely approach and tie up to the floating pontoon.
Because of these emergency dredging efforts and the need for subsequent empty test runs, the ferry service remains delayed. While operators initially hoped to clear the channel for the first weekend of the fair, the local transit authority adjusted expectations, noting that regular passenger service likely will not begin until the following week. Until the channel is successfully cleared, the blue landing bridge remains temporarily idle on the riverbank.
The children's department at the Oak Creek library has a transportation theme. There's a plane coming in for a landing etched into the glass of the windows at the end of the center aisle.
