This is Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. At this spot 75 years ago, on 6 June 1944 American forces invaded Nazi-held Europe.

The view is similar to what the German's would have had but the beach has since been completely cleared of obstacles. What had been a machine gun position is now a memorial. Many Americans lost their life here.

In the far distance we can see the remains of the "Mulberry" temporary harbour that was put in place by the British, to facilitate the landing of men and supplies at Gold Beach.

It was used for 10 months after D-Day and over 2.5 million men, 500,000 vehicles, and 4 million tons of supplies were landed. A similar harbour was constructed here at Omaha beach but it was damaged by wave action and was abandoned.

Behind me, when I took this picture, is the large American cemetery, where more than 9000 US men lie.

ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet landed on the steppe of Kazakhstan on 2 June 2017 with Russian commander Oleg Novitsky in their Soyuz MS-03 spacecraft after six months in space. Touchdown was at 14:10 GMT after a four-hour flight from the International Space Station.

Thomas spent six months on the International Space Station as part of his Proxima mission. During Proxima, Thomas took part in 60 scientific experiments for ESA and France’s space agency CNES and the international Station partners.

The mission is part of ESA’s vision to use Earth-orbiting spacecraft as a place to live and work for the benefit of European society while using the experience to prepare for future voyages of exploration further into the Solar System.

It has been a while Flickr. I've been gone for over two years and haven't had time to shoot much at all. I hope to get back to posting more frequently soon. Enjoy.

Here's a composite of 5 shots that I took recently showing the landing sequence of a Hoverfly.

I have always wanted to take a Hoverfly shot with the fly hovering above the flower and my previous attempts have been a thumping failures.

This time around I made sure that I had the correct equipment (a strudy tripod) and , patience. Luckily the light was good and the Hoverfly was very persistent and helpful (very lucky me). I took more than 50 shots and was lucky to get at least 15 which had the fly in focus :-) It was challenging try to focus on the fly with a big lens in manual mode.

And yes, I have to work some more on my compositing skills...

Hope you are all having a great week!

This past saturday I made my final trip of the year out to Cape St.Mary's to see the Gannets.

In this image a Gannet approaches the Colony looking for its nest and a place to land. The back lighting helped accent the feet and give them an orange hue.

A rather determined looking bee tries to find a landing place on a yellow rose. With the season in the Duluth Rose Garden coming to an end, it's not surprising that the tenants are in a hurry to get their business concluded for the year! Taken 30 September 2010.
