To the Mermaidian.
My late Nana Mercedes used to spend hours stripping all the paper and vinyl sleeves off the twist ties she and my aunts brought back from grocery shopping. She'd make little sheaves of these cat whisker wires, hiding them in innumerable cookie tins over the decades. "One day, these will come in handy." As I peeled the twist tie I needed for this, I wondered where my inheritance of lovingly pre-shucked twist tie wires ended up. Yet it wasn't the wires themselves that were the real legacy; it was the clever mind and kind heart of the lady who taught me to use the humble things around me to create something greater.
