Hear-Ring Lab student researcher Colleen O'Brien (2020) was recently selected to receive the 2017 Audiology/Hearing Science Research Travel Award (ARTA) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Through the ARTA, Colleen attended the 2017 ASHA Convention in Los Angeles, California in November 2017. She was given the opportunity to attend the conference, learn about innovative audiology research, network with other audiology students and professionals, and present her research. When not sleeping or collecting, live specimens are brought to the ship’s lab and identified and preserved for future work. The effort is carried out with a team of researchers focusing on different tasks. Those on the microscopes in the foreground are sorting and identifying planktonic larvae. Others in the background are sorting and preserving larger organisms.
