Douglas DC-10-30CF (c/n 46960/237)
Overseas National Airways
Genève-Cointrin (GVA/LSGG)
06 June 1978
Overseas National's engagement with the DC-10 was a rather short and unfortunate one. The first two examples were both written-off, the next two were operated for only about 18 months, and the fifth and last one was passed on only one month after delivery.
The third DC-10-30CF was N1033F, which was built and delivered in 1977, and captured at Geneva the following year on a charter service, named "HolidayLiner Enterprise". The photo was taken from the old, now demolished visitors' terrace.
Two months after the photo, N1033F was sold to Korean Air Lines as HL7339. This DC-10 also found an unfortunate end, as it was destroyed beyond economical repair at Anchorage in December 1983, when, on a cargo service, its crew became disoriented in bad visiblity and ended up on the wrong runway. During take-off it collided head-on with a departing Piper PA.31-350, and overran the runway by over 1,400ft. Three occupants on the Navajo and the crew of three on the DC-10 were injured.
