A favourite from a last minute trip to the BM&LP last weekend.
My first experience with the BM&LP was in Oct 1990, just after we moved to the US for the 1st time, on a family vacation as we drove from the Grand Canyon to Monument Valley at dusk one evening. I recall seeing the catenary poles and crossbucks but my trusty Rand McNally Railroad Atlas didn't show any railroads nearby. What on earth was it?!On the return journey back to PHX I negotiated lunch by the mystery track making good use of the family '20 minute rule'. Sadly we saw nothing, unsurprisingly, and it was a couple of years later when I found out what it was, I think from a Train Mag article?
I returned and shot the BM&LP in the late 90's and in '03 with varying success, so when I realized it was almost 16 years since my last visit, and that the end was imminent, it just had to be done, and I'm very glad I did.
For me, this photo will always bring back great memories of my chases on this last visit....dirt roads (lots of them, mostly washboard!), flat tires, off roading without the road, chasing with a rapidly deflating tire and hoping to get back to a pavement, Page AZ Walmart at 7am on a sunday getting a tire plugged, the 55mph 'suggested' limit on Rt21, ploughing sand, bottoming out the rental in 'chase mode', returning the rental in 'less than ideal' condition, 1,676 miles in 4 days, the bugs, and so on......basically hardcore balls out railfanning.
EA022 and Co lead the 1st shift loads around the big curve between Cow Springs and Tonalea along Indian Rt 6261. I didn't know it at the time, but this was my one and only chance to shoot a loaded train in the big curve here as the usual running cycle was about 2 hours late while I was there. So I was fortunate to get these late running 1st shift loads in the curve itself by the skin of my teeth.....this is the 1st frame of the burst from the pole!
Farewell BM&LP. It was a blast.
