This was the last DC-6 variant in airliner passenger service in Europe. It served with Balair from 1969 to 1982 and I saw it a couple of times at Gatwick, though before I had acquired a camera.
This aircraft was built as a DC-6A (with a main-deck freight door) and delivered in June 1958 to the Northern Aircraft Operating Company as G-APNO. It went into service with Hunting Clan Air Transport and later British United Airways, after that company was formed.
It was sold to Balair in January 1969 as HB-IBS and in due course was used solely for passenger duties. In 1982 it was sold to Conair in British Columbia and became a water bomber, C-GIBS. At the end of this period of its career it was sold to Everts in Alaska as N501YP and flown to Fairbanks on 19 December 2013. It was registered N851CE the same day but so far has not been put into service by Everts.
