If you have lost a loved one, know that because of the Conservation of Energy, their energy has not died. Remember the First Law of Thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. All their energy, every vibration, every BTU of heat, every wave of every particle that was your loved one remains with you in this world. Know that amid energies of the cosmos, they gave as good as they got.
All the photons that have ever bounced off their face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by their happiness, by the touch of their hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by the one you love. And as you grieve, know that the photons that bounced from them were gathered in the particle detectors that are your eyes, that those photons created within their constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever.
According to the Law of the Conservation of Energy, not a bit of them is gone; they're just less orderly.

It's funny how such creatures, simplistic in so many ways, can inhabit personalities more complex and deep by comparison to the shallow, murky waters of the WalMart kiddie pools that some human beings are made of. He was my shadow, my sentinel, my buddy, my pal. Little did I know that this Valentine's Day gift from an ex would lead to a lasting companionship who's absence is felt, even to this day.
Some people would scoff and say "Oh, it's just a cat." As heartless as those people are, he was so much more than the sum of himself. He probably would've followed me through the Gates of Hell and back, if I'd let him... and give them a piece of his mind in the process, since he was a chatterbox.
Where people would often fail, he would succeed.
Rest in peace, buddy.

The Lesser Yellowlegs looks a lot like the Greater Yellowlegs. They are smaller, hence the name "Lesser", but that is a difficult feature to determine when they are not side-by-side with the Greater Yellowlegs. (see collage below).
The bill is shorter, the body less robust and the coloring is in a tighter pattern in Lesser Yellowlegs.
Life Bird Photograph #222, Lesser Yellowlegs, seen along the Black Point Wildlife Drive, Merritt Island NWR, Florida. In this photo, the Yellowlegs' leg is coated with swamp muck.
Less showy than her male counterpart, the female Black Redstart is a charming, subtly beautiful little bird. Very often choosing to inhabit urban areas, her choice of nest site will sometimes bring them into close proximity to people.
During a photography shoot in Hungary, we were lucky enough to have a pair nesting in an old barn, next to the villa where we were staying. The barn was being renovated & despite constant interruptions from the building works, the birds seemed undaunted, flying in over the builders heads to feed their young.

Suddenly It Stormed...
Clouds thickly gathered,
In the darkening grey skies
Over the trackless marshlands...
Suddenly it stormed,
A reminder to appreciate
The memories of less turbulent times...

When I asked her to describe herself, she said " ... gregarious, sensitive, hopeful ..."
Available light was from the kitchen windows. Attempting to get deeper richer tones, I shrank the aperture too much, with ISO 6400 a by-product, and, of course, a lots of noise! I have not tried to clean that up in these images. Instead, I resorted to sepia in two of the shots, resulting in the noise being slightly less obvious.
I find it quite challenging to attend to all the technical necessities while chatting with the subject. But, being housebound now, portrait and bird photography are two horizons for growth I can take on. Am sharing with you my maiden efforts, with all their imperfections. Elizabeth is beautiful and I hope to invite her to sit for me again after I have a little more experience with portrait photography.
Must confess Halloween is my most dreaded holiday.
The hype is impossible to ignore . . . and the fact this particular event has become as celebrated as Christmas is a bit disturbing to me. None-the-less, it's everywhere . . . and we do enjoy the other parts of this indoor/outdoor used book park!

This morning I discovered a literal example of the golden hour rule. I was actually headed home after a trip down Seward Highway hoping to catch the sunrise. Unfortunately I ran into rain and clouds. Then on my drive home the sun came out briefly. The funny thing is that this spot is less than 10 minutes away from my house.
Amboseli is known for large elephants, including the famous "Big Tuskers" which there are less than 25 left, due to massive poaching. This is not one of the famous guys, but still wonderful to see. They were spending a lot of time dusting this trip.
Wikipedia: The grey peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron bicalcaratum), also known as Burmese peacock-pheasant, is a large Asian member of the order Galliformes.
It is a large pheasant, up to 76 cm long and greyish brown with finely spotted green eyespots, an elongated bushy crest, bare pink or yellow facial skin, white throat, and grey iris, bill and legs. The sexes are rather similar, but the female is smaller, darker and less ornamented than the male. The young resemble the female.
The grey peacock-pheasant is distributed in lowland and hill forests of Bangladesh, Northeast India and Southeast Asia, but excluding most of Indochina as well as the entire Malayan Peninsula. The diet consists mainly of seeds, termites, fruits and invertebrates. The female usually lays two eggs.

From the Cornell Lab:
"The Lesser Prairie-Chicken is a pale grouse of the southern Great Plains, found only in prairie and agricultural land with shinnery oak and sand sagebrush. Once widespread and abundant, its numbers have crashed following heavy hunting in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and then conversion of its natural habitat to cropland and rangeland. Like its close relative, the larger, darker Greater Prairie-Chicken, male Lesser Prairie-Chickens gather in spring on “leks,” sites where males compete for females by performing spectacular displays."
This shot was taken at Smoky Valley Ranch, a Nature Conservancy property in western Kansas. More than half of all lesser prairie chickens in the world are in western Kansas. The Nature Conservancy is playing a key role in preserving the species.
Third and final installment in my grouse series.
I was lucky to have some color in the sky the evening I was in Bingen if only momentarily it made for a less than boring capture of the famous Mouse Tower.
In my previous post I mentioned the Bishop of Mainz extracted his tolls from the river tradesman with his three toll burgs, the mouse tower being on the river was the principal place of toll collection.
There is a story that goes the Bishop was also in charge of food distribution in the region and during a particular bad harvest season refused to let the backup stores be distributed and tricked the townspeople into a building that he barred the entrance to and set it ablaze.
Apparently laughing to himself about the townspeople tortured screams sounding like rats, he visited his own curse upon himself as that night a swarm of rats chased him down through town and cornered him in the mouse tower where he was devoured by the horde.
Disclaimer: Not trying to be realistic in my editing there is enough realism in the world, my style is a mix of painterly and romanticism as well as a work in progress.

For the art lovers amongst us...
This is a sculpture called "Butterfly" created by Henry Moore.
Seen and admired in October 2006 at the Henry Moore exhibition in Museum "De KunstHal" in Rotterdam. You can find more information HERE
“The secret of life is to have a task, something you devote your entire life to, something you bring everything to, every minute of the day for the rest of your life. And the most important thing is, it must be something you cannot possibly do.”
- Quote by Henry Moore -
Walled up arches beneath Victoria Viaduct in Carlisle.
Not the photograph I intended to take. In the other location (hopefully featured on a future date) there resided a lady who... was perhaps under the influence of illicit substances.
She was ranting and raving and agitating her large, savage-looking dog. Given it was a grim underpass in the dark, I gave it a miss. Sad. It was cold, dark and no place to be staying, under a bridge.
I'll go back tomorrow and if she's there I'll be more prepared (and less scared of the dog). See if I can help her in some way.
That's the first month done. Just the twelve to go.

It Is Said That Nothing Is Going to Last Forever
I’m just glad for the time I have now
Let the mysteries come
The confusion reign
The sun rise
The sun set
A new day begins
And then it ends
Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one early evening around sunset in the area around International Falls, Minnesota. The view extends to the west looking along the shores of Rainy Lake. Other than aligning myself up to more or less center the sun in the image, the rest was moving around the shoreline until I could find a look with that to complement the lake waters in the right hand portion of the image.
I chose to work with Camera RAW HDR merge tool to better bring that complete color setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 9 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.
Winter is almost over now
I spent most of the year
Dreading you
You are a curse that always
Lasts about 2 to 3 months
Though, each year I'm alive
Your visits grow shorter
You remind me of death
Everything will leave us in time
All living entities have an Expiration
Not all dates are readable or Predictable
But winter comes and takes so much away from us.
It is hard to even appreciate Autumn
When you think about
All of the beauty dying.
All of the colors drying out.
And the Withering…
The challenge to find beauty
In less expected places.
The air, although it seems, crisp at first, becomes
Far more chilling, and intolerable.
The greater the years I am alive,
The more brutal it feels.
It gets to feeling like
I have no skin at all.
But now, I realize
Spring is actually coming.
Spring is a hopeful time yet
Will I ironically miss the dread?
I feel remorse for the fact that
I have no excuse to stay
Inside, isolated, and depressed.
This feels much more like my
Genuine human state.
I cannot resist the world in Spring when life is reborn
I literally have no reasons left
To not go outside.
The experience of the world is
Waiting for me.
Am I ready?

When light is harsh and there is a composition to be had just go for it. When I saw this scene I thought mono but when I was on PS yesterday I was in two minds, then went back to my original thought and ran it through Silver Efex. I like the high contrast result now.
We went out this morning with a thought of going to some woods but the weather had other ideas for us, the rain came down in Biblical proportions and we ended up having to drive through floodwaters very cautiously, the woods are now so waterlogged i think you would need thigh boots to get through.
Never the less I did take some images to show in a day or so, now we are back home the sky has cleared the sun is out , more of the same to come the next two days .

Winter has shown us its less beautiful side in the last few days. It's actually cloudy, dreary and gray out there all day long. Probably at night too, but we are spared this sight because of the regular darkness.
Now it's time for me to change the seasons once again to at least spread a little light and color here.
And so we go back to a beautiful November evening in the beautiful Elbe Sandstone Mountains (on the outskirts of Lohmen) in a beautiful beech forest (someone might say I have a problem with superlatives) and enjoy the sun as it casts stripes of light and shadow on the forest floor.
By the way, the area directly in front of us spontaneously reminded me of a road, which led to the title of this picture.
