Funky direction signs at Hall Gate- this one points to Jallianwala Bagh, the site of a big massacre of unarmed Indian civilians by the infamous Gen. Dayer. More about that later. We are at Hall Gate now, (nowadays called Gandhi Gate) which is one of the entry gates to the Hall Bazaar, an open air market in the city of Amritsar. . The Amritsar Town Hall and Company Bagh can also be visited after shopping at the Hall Bazaar. (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)

Bright signs at the entrance to the Dotonbori food street in the Namba-Dotonbori district of Osaka, Japan. Once known as the theatre district, declining interest in traditional arts and drama and heavy bombing during WW-II has resulted in Dotonbori re-emerging in a new avatar as the foodie district of Osaka. Detailed notes about Dotonbori appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). Although bright LED signs proliferate in this area, I was surprised at the clarity and life-like resemblance of the one in the foreground- the ad for Asahi beer- compete with water droplets on the outside of the can! (Osaka, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

The 10 Bit LED Sign is a personal project to create an analog LED sign. It uses an LCD screen as the source. Photodiodes arranged in a (10X10) grid read the light output from the LCD, then directly output to each LED on the sign. There are no electronics, other than LEDs, Photodiodes and lots of wiring.
These are some of the instances why a LED sign is preferable than a neon sign. Daily drink specials can be altered into a LED sign while a neon sign cannot be modified. In addition, a LED sign is easier to repair as compared to a neon sign. It is also more energy efficient so bar owners can save money on the electric bills. As evidence that they use less energy, they are cool when it is touched. Unlike neon signs, LED does not heat up the room if displayed indoors.
