"De lichtste straat van Amsterdam is deze winter niet de door kerstetalages beschenen P.C. Hooftstraat. Het is ook niet de beroemde Trompettersteeg op de Wallen, slechts één meter breed, maar altijd druk bezocht. Nee, de meest sprankelen- de steeg gedurende de donkere wintermaanden is de Alley of Light, oftewel de Lichtsteeg.
Hij is te vinden op het Jonas Daniël Meijerplein, dat ligt aan de voeten van het Joods Historisch Museum en de Portugees-Israëlietische Synagoge uit 1675. Aan het ene uiteinde van het plein bevindt zich een verhoging. Je zou het kunnen zien als een podium dat ervoor gemaakt lijkt om als locatie te dienen voor het ontwerp dat de Amsterdamse architect Serge Schoemaker bedacht.
Alley of Light is een driedimensionale matrix van bijna 2000 ledlampen. Dit ‘gebouw’ van licht, een hangconstructie tussen een aantal palen, is vier meter hoog en twaalf meter lang. In het midden bevindt zich die lichtsteeg, een lange smalle passage waar je doorheen kunt lopen. In plaats van rode of grijze bakstenen zie je nu duizenden lichtpuntjes om je heen, die voortdurend van sterkte veranderen. Vergelijk- baar met het spel van de zon en de wolken, die met adem- benemende snelheid golven van licht en duisternis door een straat heen kunnen laten gaan. Open, dynamisch, betoverend – deze steeg vertegenwoordigt de beste kwaliteiten die een hedendaagse stad als Amsterdam te bieden heeft.
De lichttechnische kant van het kunstwerk werd uitgedacht door Luuk van Laake. Zijn bedrijf DigiLuce is gespecialiseerd in lichtdesign. Van Laake zorgde ervoor dat elk ledlampje in de matrix afzonderlijk kan worden aangestuurd en dat Alley of Light kan worden ervaren als een volume van licht. Alsof de lampjes werden bevestigd langs de contouren van een echt bouwwerk dat zich al lang bevond op het plein. Niets is minder waar. Alley of Light bewijst hoe je met behulp van licht uit het niets iets kunt bouwen. Een ander mooi voorbeeld van die gedachte zijn de 88 lichtbundels die in 2002 in New York werden geïnstalleerd naast de plek waar het jaar daarvoor de twee torens van het World Trade Center in elkaar zegen. Sindsdien worden ze elk jaar aangezet als eerbetoon aan de mensen de tijdens die aanval op 11 september hun leven verloren. De lichtbundels wijzen de lucht in en vormen samen twee ‘gebouwen’. Zo sterk is die illusie, dat vogels die de torens ‘in’ vliegen, er niet op eigen houtje uit komen en als gekken rondjes blijven vliegen tussen de verblindende stralen. De lichtinstallatie moet dan een paar minuten worden uitgezet om de vogels de kans te geven aan het licht te ontsnappen.
Ook Alley of Light neemt bezoekers gevangen, zij het op minder beangstigende wijze. Wie de lichtsteeg eenmaal heeft betreden, raakt betoverd en wil er zelf niet meer vandaan, ook al is de uitgang duidelijk zichtbaar. Veel gelukzaliger dan midden in de stad omgeven zijn door een flonkerende en pulserende sterrenhemel wordt het immers niet. Dat weet iedereen. Sinds 2008 runt hij zijn eigen kantoor en is hij gastdocent aan verschillende universiteiten in Nederland. Luuk van Laake (1981, Nederland) studeerde werktuigbouwkunde aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Hij heeft DigiLuce opgericht in 2011 en is gespecialiseerd in het ontwikkelen van nieuwe technologie voor uitdagende (licht)projecten.

Costed me about 11€ with shipping and compared to the $20 without shipping for the René Herse's equivalent I thought I’d give it a try. Plus: judging by the pictures, these lights look an awful lot a like and they are both made in the EU.
This LED bulb will replace the old bulb in my Soubitez taillight. Let's see how, if and for how long it works. It even has a capacitor in it and according to the package stays on for 5 minutes after a 90 second ride … I am a bit skeptical.

Erst seit kurzer Zeit in Betrieb. Die Spirale besteht aus Aluminium-Stäben mit eingelassenen LED-Leuchten. Die Aufnahme entstand an einem Sonntagmorgen. Da es kurz vorher noch geregnet hatte, glänzte die ganze Umgebung und es entstand eine schon fast mystische Stimmung.
