First ever experiment of this kind!
Spinning a LED lamp (27 white leds) on a string, slowly turning around my own axis!)
(I had a piece of white paper taped around the lamp, to diffuse the LED's a little :)

Now I tested a new tube lens with the Mitutoyo BD Plan APO 10x microscope objective. I bought an inexpensive 200mm focal length achromat lens. It was unmounted and uncemented from two elements, thus I did them myself. The lenses were fitted in an M42 extension tube and cemented with olive oil.
207 led light exposures at 1/10 sec., ISO-100, 10x magnification. Stacked in Zerene Stacker's PMax method.

Playing again with the subject from the previous jewel beetle post. Now I changed the angle, we can see it almost from back. I used the Schneider Componon-S 2.8/50 enlarger lens reversed on bellows at 2,6x. LED-illuminated shots at 1/2 sec., f/5.6, ISO-50. 94 exposures stacked in Zerene PMax.

3444 : Gouvy - Trois-Ponts, schooltrein
Aankomst bij eindstation Trois-Ponts
Een nostalgische foto van de P-trein ingelegd op schooldagen tussen Gouvy en Trois-Ponts. Deze bestond uit één M2 rijtuig gesleept door meestal een zware dieselloc reeks 55. Een loc reeks 62 was logischer voor deze dienst maar dit kwam zelden voor doordat de locs voor diensten vanuit Gouvy te licht uitvielen. In 1997 hadden we geluk. Loc 6260 had net de scholierentrein naar Trois-Ponts gebracht. Traditioneel zette de loc te Trois-Ponts om waarna leeg terug naar Gouvy gereden werd. Om ritten uit te sparen werd meermaals kreatief omgesprongen. Zo namen 2 55'ers de lege rit voor hun rekening zoals volgende foto toont. De zware diesellocs hadden een houttrein naar Trois-Ponts gebracht.
Na al die jaren blijft het een gek zicht om deze Kempense loc als tractie voor de Ardense scholierentrein te zien. De machine was een tijdlang actief op lijn 42 tijdens de elektrificatiewerken. Een gegeven dat mij geïnspireerd heeft om een Roco 62'er om te nummeren tot 6260. Nu 25 jaar later werd deze deskundig herbouwd en kreeg de ingewanden van hedendaagse locs dankzij een nieuwe motor, ledlampen en een ESU V5 decoder. Met deze superloc rijden heeft me geïnspireerd om deze dia's op te zoeken en in te scannen. Meer dan 1 M2 rijtuig heb ik niet nodig om een overtuigend treintje samen te stellen.

This is my latest kit for focus stacking. In this shot I have the Nikon 10x objective fitted in front of the Canon lens to give an overall 5x magnification I believe. This is useful for really close-up images of (eg) the faces of flies. Other times I use a Raynox lens and often just the Canon macro lens is about right for shots of a whole insect. Omitted for clarity is the roll of paper that I use to shield the specimen (and lens) from the glare of the lamps. This is often draped in additional tissue paper to reduce the light so that I can use a long exposure time (eg 2 secs) to further reduce the effect of any vibration. The objective is to have everything rock-solid when the shots are taken.
Het doel van Doel als doel…
Waarom zou je als doorgewinterde urbexer een bezoek aan Doel willen brengen? Doel, een klein plaatsje aan de linker oever van de (wester)schelde, op de hoek van de haven van Antwerpen. Wie heeft er niet van gehoord? In 1999 is de bewoners medegedeeld dat het plaatsje in 2020 met de grond gelijk wordt gemaakt om de haven te kunnen uitbreiden. Vanaf dat moment zijn steeds meer inwoners het gebied ontvlucht. De huizen als prooi voor de natuur, inbrekers, krakers, vandalen, graffitispuiters en urbexers achterlatend.
Als je de verschillende verhalen op internet er op naslaat, lees je dat het ondertussen wel door heel veel urbexers is bezocht, soms in groepen van 20 man tegelijk. Het nieuwe is eraf, het is niet interessant meer. Des te interessanter voor mij en mijn urbexmaatje. Je moet er ten slotte een keertje geweest zijn, toch?
We hebben bewust een dag in het voorjaar uitgezocht, niet te warm en naar verwachting een beetje regenachtig. Dat scheelt enorm als je ter plaatse niet teveel andere fotografen wilt tegenkomen. Doel ligt redelijk dichtbij, een dikke 100 kilometer rijden, en we reden dan ook al vrij vroeg het plaatsje binnen. Wat direct opvalt is de graffiti op bijna alle huizen, de dichtgespijkerde panden, de brede straten en de stilte, de leegte…
De stilte en leegte wordt af en toe onderbroken door de stadsbus die nog steeds braaf zijn rondjes rijdt en bij elke bushalte stopt zonder dat er iemand in of uitstapt. Ook de postbus die nog steeds aan de gevel van het dichtgespijkerde gesticht hangt wordt nog dagelijks geleegd alsof er niets aan de hand is. Ook de politie doet nog haar plicht. We waren het plaatsje nog niet binnengereden of we werden achtervolgt door een politiebusje. Nadat we een parkeerplaats hadden gevonden bij de kerk reed het busje ons langzaam voorbij. Het was te verwachten dat ze, na een rondje door het plaatsje, nog wel een keertje langs zouden komen, dus we besloten de fotoapparatuur nog even in de auto te laten en, zo nonchalant mogelijk, een wandeling te gaan maken door de straten van Doel. En jawel, de politie reed weer langs. Het is moeilijk om je onopvallend te gedragen, niemand gaat daar voor z’n plezier wandelen en je komt er zeker niet helemaal voor uit Nederland. Kennelijk was dit hun laatste rondje want pas veel later op de dag reden ze weer rond. Het lijkt op een vaste patrouille die overigens niet veel voorstelt.
Met de rugzakken om en de camera’s op de schouder trekken we het stadje in. Weer vallen de brede straten op en de leegte. Het zijn natuurlijk helemaal geen brede straten maar het is er wel leeg, er staan namelijk nergens, bijna nergens, auto’s geparkeerd. Er loopt niemand op straat, hier en daar een loslopende hond en kat maar dat is ook alles. Elke auto die langsrijdt is een bezienswaardigheid en is voor ons reden om even weg te duiken. Hele straten met verlaten panden en soms, heel soms, een bewoond huis. Soms herkenbaar aan een auto voor de deur, het ontbreken van graffiti op de muren, behalve als de bewoners er zelf een protesttekst op hebben geschilderd, levende plantjes voor de ramen of een simpele tekst op de ruiten dat het pand nog bewoond is.
Op de achtergrond zie je de koeltorens van de kerncentrale van Doel. In gedachte is een relatie met Tjernobyl snel gemaakt. Ook Doel lijkt in één keer verlaten door al haar bewoners als gevolg van een nucleaire ramp. Even schiet het door je gedachte dat het misschien echt zo is, straling kun je niet zien…
Aan de straatkant is weinig te beleven voor urbexers. Alles is goed afgesloten. Sommige panden zelfs met metalen platen. Een ander verhaal wordt het als je de huizen vanuit de achtertuintjes benadert. Alles is open! Je hoeft nergens “in te breken”. Af en toe over een hekje klimmen of over een afvalberg heen stappen is voldoende om vrijwel elk huis van binnen te kunnen bekijken. En dat “bekijken” hebben kennelijk al heel wat mensen voor ons gedaan. Veel is gesloopt en beklad met leuzen en tekeningen. Enkele panden bevatten nog delen van huisraad, een omgevallen kast, een zonnebank, een kapotte stoel of een lege vrieskist. Andere panden zijn helemaal leeg en geheel gestript van alles wat een beetje waardevol was.
Het enige deel van het stadje dat nog intact is en er netjes bijstaat is de kerk en het kerkhof. De kerk staat een beetje scheef maar de klok loopt nog op tijd en af en toe zijn de kerkklokken hoorbaar boven het irritante geluid wat afkomstig is van de activiteiten in het havengebied. Een constante lage brom is hoorbaar evenals het piepende geluid van vrachtwagens die achteruit rijden. Maar je hoort geen mensen. Er zijn geen mensen.
We proberen zoveel mogelijk de moderne nieuwe huizen te vermijden. Onze interesse gaat meer uit naar panden waar nog zaken te fotograferen zijn waar het verleden van afstraalt en waar aan de stofwebben te zien is dat de tijd heeft stilgestaan.
Om 13.00 uur gaat een sirene af. Schuilend voor de regen zitten we net te eten in een van de panden. Het zal wel etenstijd zijn in de haven, is de eerste gedachte. Dan bekruipt ons toch een vreemd gevoel. Het is precies het sirene geluid wat we in Nederland op de 1e van de maand laten horen. Een snel repeterende alarmtoon. Het is de 26e van de maand. Het lijkt ons geen datum om een alarmsysteem te testen. Er is niemand in de buurt waaraan je kunt merken dat er iets vreemds aan de hand is. We gaan verder met onze boterham en de sirene stopt op een gegeven ogenblik. We besluiten er verder maar geen aandacht aan te besteden. Als het zo vlak naast een kerncentrale misgaat is er toch geen redden meer aan…
We komen in huizen die mooier en groter zijn dan wat wij thuis gewend zijn. Fraaie vrijstaande villa’s in een bosrijke omgeving met mooie bubbelbaden en enorme spiegelwanden. Als schril contrast ontdekken we ook heel kleine pandjes met het toilet in een klein schuurtje buiten.
In een van de huizen staat de kelder onder water. Terwijl ik de trap naar beneden afloop en deels al in het water sta, valt mijn ledlamp uit m’n jaszak. De lamp verdwijnt direct onder water. Een snelle reactie voorkomt dat de batterijen nat worden en er kortsluiting ontstaat.
Later op de dag begint het steeds harder te waaien en te regenen. Overal hoor je ramen en deuren klapperen en dichtslaan. Gordijnen bewegen heen en weer in de wind. De toch al lugubere omgeving wordt er niet vriendelijker op. We worden steeds voorzichtiger. Je weet tenslotte niet of zeker of het de wind is die de geluiden veroorzaakt…
Moe geworden van de huizentocht besluiten we dat het mooi genoeg is geweest. We hebben dan de helft van de huizen bekeken. Waar je in Nederland al blij bent met één pand waar je in kunt, is het hier al snel teveel van het goede en meer van hetzelfde.
Het stadje verlatend rijden we nog even langs de kerncentrale. We realiseren ons dat die centrale wel erg dicht in de buurt van ons eigen huis ligt. Een afstand van nog geen 130 kilometer. Een explosie en een verkeerde windrichting en…

Since I use two different lighting system for high magnification studio photography, was curious about the difference of the effects.
Well, I chose a tiny leaf miner jewel beetle from my collection and did two stacking sequence. One lit with a Speedlite 580EXII flash through a plactic diffuser around the subject, and another with 2 IKEA table LED lamps through the same diffuser. Find the picture of the setup below!
Shots were taken with a Mitutoyo BD Plan 10x microscope objective on a Apo-Gerogon 9/150 enlarger lens at 9,2x magnification. 105 exposures in each stacks. Shutter speed with flash: 1/100 sec. (live view mode), with LEDs: 1/3 sec. (live view, silent shooting mode).
I found no remarkable difference in the light effects. Perhaps when the flashlight is coming frontwise of the beetle looks more natural than the two separated light reflection. Another strange thing appears: the different color of the LED lamps. I have 4 Jansjö lamps and none of them has the same colors.
Then I looked at the stacks at the original resolution and surprised of the difference. I do not know why, the LED lit version has slightly finer and perhaps sharper details. Check out the comparison below side-by-side!
Today I decided to try something different and once I was done with some magazines shots I got rid of the speedlights, closed the curtains and put a polarizer on the lens. For this image I took 5 different exposures and in each one I painted with a Led light a different part of the subject. I then exported the 5 exposures to Photomatix and worked them as Exposure Fusion and not tone mapping. Once done I re-imported it to Lightroom and put the final tough to the shot. Was it worth? Not sure, but there is no better judge around than you guys :-)

Today on the 14th of December I have been one year on Flickr. It has been a very interesting time for me and I have learned quite a few things.
Thank you all for the comments and favs I have been given this year they have meant a lot to me.
They have meant that 27 of my photos have reached explore and two of them have reached the front page. So thanks a lot for that.

Apparently distributed (made?) by a company called Bikelight in Switzerland. There Website seems to be broken, but the domain name holder has a company in Hunzenschwil.
Costed me about 11€ with shipping and compared to the $20 without shipping for the René Herse's equivalent I thought I’d give it a try. Plus: judging by the pictures, these lights look an awful lot a like and they are both made in the EU.
This LED bulb will replace the old bulb in my Soubitez taillight. Let's see how, if and for how long it works. It even has a capacitor in it and according to the package stays on for 5 minutes after a 90 second ride … I am a bit skeptical.

I got a new objective, the Rodenstock Apo-Gerogon 9/150 enlarging lens. My friend John used the same as a tube lens for infinity corrected microscope objective.
After resolving the attachment to my Mitutoyo BD Plan APO 10/0.28 I made two stack sequence for the test. First at 8,5:1, then 10:1 magnification, playing with the bellows' length. As the microscope objective has been designed for 200mm focal length tube lenses, I was curious about the performance with the 150mm enlarging lens. Perhaps this jumping spider is not the best test subject, but the possibilities of fresh arthropods in winter are quite limited.
I used different illumination for the two stack. First (on this current image) with two LED lamps from that Swedish furnishings store. White office paper surrounds the spider diffusing the spot lights. 126 shots were taken at 1/6 s; ISO-50. Combined them using Zerene Stacker's PMax method.

Leaf miner jewel beetle (Buprestidae, Agrilinae, Trachini). Length: 2,35 mm.
These tiny jewel beetles are developing inside leaves. Their larvae make curved galleries under the surface of various leaves. The host plants of Trachys scrobiculatus are Glechoma species. Adults can be found on the leaves of the plant between spring and autumn.

Onder schaduwstation Troisvierges heb ik ledlampen gehangen om schaduwstation Kinkempois uit te lichten. Ditmaal koos ik voor ledlampen in buisvorm bedoelt voor keukengebruik. Ze zijn minder hevig dan de ledbattens die boven Troisvierges hangen. Maar dit komt mooi uit.
Intussen ligt overal kurk en kunnen we starten met het leggen van de laatste sporen.
