Sternula antillarum

………Well at least another bridge to get over first!! This route was out of action for a few years after severe flood damage in 2015 during storm Desmond when two bridges were washed away & another severely damaged. The Penrith to Keswick branch line follows the River Greta from Threlkeld to Keswick - I can just imagine what a wonderful 18 mile train ride that was and the excitement of no less than 78 bridges! Yes SEVENTY EIGHT!! - 8 of which cross the SAME river (Greta). Thankfully the current rainfall hasn’t taken such a toll in the area by all accounts though it has been pretty rough. Alan:-)…….

Sometimes in the morning with the pickleweed and other plant reflections, the light hits just right and you get some interesting lighting and colors.

This Least Grebe snuck up on me while I was trying to get photos of some White-rumped Sandpipers. After I spent what seemed like an eternity getting close to the water’s edge and as low as possible, I looked up to see this tiny beauty just a few feet away; what a nice surprise!

I'd prefer to view this beautiful male un-blocked by vegetation but it's rare to find this secretive bird even this out-in-the-open.

After posting shots of most of the other kinds of peeps, I figured that a shot of this particular species would be a reasonable expectation.

Anything else would be 'non sequitur' to say the least.

I found this bittern in a marshland with a flooded road near Lake Huron. Because of the high water, I hiked in with boots into an environment empty of people where the animals contentedly went about their lives. As I enjoyed the solitude and relished the undisturbed lives of the marshland residents, I could hear the call of a Least Bittern. Within 10 minutes, I caught sight of this short little heron. While this image looks as though I am only a few feet from the bird, I am in fact about 20 feet away. The bird perched unperturbed for fifteen minutes--maybe longer.

Our recent trip through South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado produced a pretty good variety of wildlife sightings and photo ops. Trying to decide what order to present the first few posts from the trip I thought smallest to largest would be fun. So here's the smallest. Our smallest shorebird, weighing, .8 oz (22 Grams). I usually find flocks of Least sandpipers in Arizona during their spring migration to the tundra of northern North America where they nest.

Carolina Beach Lake, NC. - I took off the 2X TC for these shots since I was pretty close, and shot at f/2.8. I think the images are just as sharp WITH the TC!

This summer I had a few opportunities with up-close least bitterns. It was a treat!
