Also known as the Brazilian Pygmy-Owl, on account of it being almost endemic to that country, the Least Pygmy-Owl occurs from northern Bahia state south to at least ParanĂ¡ state, and has been recorded in neighbouring Paraguay, as well as being speculated to be present in adjacent northeastern Argentina. This species formerly comprised part of a much wider species complex that also includes Tamaulipas Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium sanchezi), Colima Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium palmarum), and Central American Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium griseiceps), as well as the recently described Subtropical Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium parkeri). However, in terms of identification, it overlaps geographically only with the near-ubiquitous Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum), which species has a quite different voice, is larger, with a streaked (not spotted) crown, and a more barred tail. Least Pygmy-Owl is also never found in second growth or the more open country frequently favored by the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. Instead, it favours evergreen Atlantic Forest and its edges, and is found at elevations up to about 1000 m. Like other pygmy-owls, this species is partially diurnal and is easily attracted using a whistled imitation of hollow-sounding, double- or treble-noted song. Despite being relatively abundant, currently very little is known of the Least Pygmy-Owl’s ecology. It is very small - 14–15 cm; c. 50 g - almost a house sparrow size.

Estero Llano Grande State Park is a great winter location for ducks and grebes and some amazing song birds. I was glad to get some close up time with this least grebe. Unfortunately an angry birder chased it off, but I digress......

I know this is a Least Flycatcher because I saw it give its CHEbek! song which distinguishes it from the others in the tricky Empidonax Flycatcher genus.

I finally found my first Least Tern chick for the spring! I hunkered down and waited motionless for over an hour, hoping a parent would show up and interact with the chick. Didn't happen!!

A least sandpiper makes its way across the shallows searching for food. Weighing in at about 1 ounce (28 grams) it is the smallest shorebird in the world. Just a bit larger than a sparrow. They winter across the south-most part of the United States, down through Central America and the top of South America

I had my camera sitting on the ground for this shot to get a super-low PoV. I like the soft reflection the low PoV yields

A hulking warbler that resembles Eurasian Reed-Warbler in coloration but far larger with a proportionately more massive head, heavy bill with a dark tip, and a broad, pale eyebrow. Breeds in reed beds, crashing through the reeds in short flights and bending stems when perched. Song short but very loud and memorable with repeated phrases of "karra-karra-karra gurk gurk gurk chirrr-chirrr karra karra." Call a high-pitched “krrrrr." (eBird)

--------------

Beautiful warbler who defied convention to come out into the open and regale us with his lovely song.

One of the smallest inhabitants of the western mountain forests we visit is the Least Chipmunk, weighing in at just a couple of ounces. At the opposite end of the mountain forest wildlife scale is...come back tomorrow.

I've been doing my best to take video footage of my finds lately, you can see this small fella (the smallest shorebird on earth!) here:

I found this Least Bittern slowly climbing through the reeds at the edge of Olney Pond at Brazoria NWR yesterday morning. They cam move so slowly it’s pretty amazing. Most of the time the bird was buried too deep in the vegetation to get a photo but eventually he crossed an opening big enough to get most of the bird in view.

Ixobrychus exilis

This is a photo of a male least bittern, Ixobrychus exilis, taken at Sweetwater Wetlands Park. These little bitterns rarely pose out in the open, so I had to take the photo, even though it was pretty far away.

With lots of rain and high water, it has been a slow, late start to the Least Bittern nesting season. But this male bird in breeding plumage was actively courting a shy mate so there is yet hope for nature to take its course on Horsepen Bayou.
