Green Cay Wetlands

Same male Least Bittern as the previous, at the moment he launched in my direction. Unless there is a nearby nest involved, it is rarely obvious which way these birds are going to head so I hang back far enough that I can react (hopefully) in time to track them as they zip away. In this instance, I barely had to move the lens at all. Even better, the camera's attention stuck with the bird rather than its default Background Clutter Focus. On Horsepen Bayou shortly after sunrise.

These little flycatchers are tough. I think the eyering makes this a "Least"

I want to get up early one more morning,

before sunrise. Before the birds, even.

I want to throw cold water on my face

and be at my work table

when the sky lightens and smoke

begins to rise from the chimneys

of the other houses.

I want to see the waves break

on this rocky beach, not just hear them

break as I did in my sleep.

I want to see again the ships

that pass through the Strait from every

seafaring country in the world -

old, dirty freighters just barely moving along,

and the swift new cargo vessels

painted every color under the sun

that cut the water as they pass.

I want to keep an eye out for them.

And for the little boat that plies

the water between the ships

and the pilot station near the lighthouse.

I want to see them take a man off the ship

and put another one up on board.

I want to spend the day watching this happen

and reach my own conclusions.

I hate to seem greedy - I have so much

to be thankful for already.

But I want to get up early one more morning, at least.

And go to my place with some coffee and wait.

Just wait, to see what's going to happen.”

After being driven off by a pushy Sanderling he ventured over close to me! Why can't they just all get along! lol!!

A Least Tern pulls up from a dive into a tidal pool with a pretty big catch for his size.

NC, May 2020

There are many dangers at a Least Tern nesting site. Besides, foxes, raccoons, gulls, unleashed dogs etc., adults must guard their eggs and young against the ever present Ghost Crabs.

Very well, then. It's a series - once I have a name for it. At least it's not facing left, though.

After all, what's better than a constant, when combatting the restlessness brought about by impending change?

I'm always looking for the least bittern. In addition, I'm looking for a certain pose, i.e., hanging on to two reeds and out in the open. This one comes close.

Wishing you a lovely and blessed Friday !!

Captain's log, stardate 6102.1. While investigating a distress call from a star cluster in the Protari system our ship, the U.S.S. Constitution and its crew, were pulled into a mysterious tractor beam. All data shows that we've somehow been transported to another dimension.

Myself, Captain Jezebel Kraai along with Science Officer Cidni Starchild, Chief Engineer Harper Blackwood, and Lieutenant Moran have set foot on what appears to be a post apocalyptic world. The surface appears to be like our own Earth and so far we're reading no life forms.

Could this be Earth and could we have somehow traveled back in time? Is this the year 2231, just after the first nuclear strikes of World War III? I will update when we have more data. Kraai out.

I appreciate these wonderful ladies and fellow artist for helping me out on this one. It's been a long time coming as this shot was actually taken this past May.

I was sort of baffled about what I wanted to do with this capture then decided to do a fantasy composite with it. So this is my first try at this sort of thing. I hope you guys find it at least adequate. Thanks!♥

This the 4th capure I inducted to the In Good Company Erotica Gallery for their October show.

The gallery is owned and operated by my friend Marcus Strong. Thank you so much Marcus for the oppotunity.♥

Our guided birding group in Peru had only one sighting of Least Grebe in 12 days, and I was lucky enough to discover it (there weren’t many such occasions on my part) at a small pond near the Villa Carmen Biological Station on Manu Road. After I reported it to our guide Alex Durrand we all went together to see it. [This was on October 3rd 2022, and this species was not reported there again on eBird until March 15th 2023 as best as I can tell.] Overall of course, Least Grebe is widespread in Central and South America.

Small brownish wren, usually rather plain overall, with dark barring on the wings and tail. Lacks white eyebrow. Occurs in a variety of open or semiopen habitats, including suburbs, parks, rural farmland, and woodland edge with thick tangles. Larger, longer tailed, and generally slightly paler than Winter and Pacific Wrens. Often perches conspicuously when singing, but otherwise fairly secretive. Listen for bubbly song of chatters and trills, and harsh scolding calls. (eBird)

---------------

One of my favourite birds! For such a small bird they are both incredibly vocal and very fierce. This one was singing up a literal wind storm but didn't seem the least fussed about the wind mussing his feathers.

"Chouchou is a historic location in Second Life. Each of us has visited it at least once, and it enchanted us.

At the point of arrival, water, and an endless horizon seemingly infinite surround you.

When you activate music, it’s magic. The music is original to the authors of the location, more specifically: Juliet Heberle is a vocalist, while Arabesque Choch is a composer. The original music of Chouchou on the official website of the sim: chouchou.cc/music/.

Chouchou is known for its music and for the location of water that inspired many other sites, but it is right to remember that the sim hosts two other exciting spaces in the sky, Islamey, and Memento, accessible by a teleport located at the foot of the staircase that leads to the air.

Also, the authors of the location have made artistic videos of high level, and they are visible on their website at the following link: chouchou.cc/music/, under the heading “music videos.”

Today, reading on Facebook, I learned that Chouchou is in danger of closing down.

Many people are worried about this news because Chouchou is a symbol of Second Life, one of many, of course. However, one of the most significant. I hope that the Linden Lab will accept the invitation to preserve this place that for many Second Life users is a corner of peace, harmony, and therapy to the greyness of everyday life."

This Least Sandpiper waded out into a small pool searching for morsels of food. I don't know why she is in this upright position, as you rarely see this sandpiper in that type of stance. Just prior to this image, the bird was in a skirmish with another Least Sandpiper, so maybe this is a defensive posture. Although the smallest of the peep species, definitely an attractive bird. Please view large for the best Least experience! :D

My goal this past weekend was to photograph shorebirds and to capture at least one species that I have not previously encountered. Mission accomplished, and I will be sharing a variety of shorebird species in the coming days. Stay tuned.

Once again, thanks to all who visit my photostream, and fave and comment on my images. Thank you!

Sternula Antillarum

It's said that once the babies hatch, the male leaves and lets the female fend for herself. It was evident here. At one point the mom took off to get food for the young ones and left them alone.

For this shot, we laid on the sand for a good amount of time and didn't move till the mom trusted us. She didn't mind we were this close. Only a couple of photographers walked to this spot to see the colony.

This image of a Least Sandpiper conveys the intensity of the bird’s focus as it searches for food, with that straight ahead gaze. This species is small, and its prey very small, but those things do not diminish the importance to it of its need to find sustenance. The “charismatic megafauna” tend to attract a disproportionate amount of attention, while the myriad smaller creatures play important roles in Nature that are often overlooked. This bird was seen foraging along the shore of a slough east of Airdrie in southern Alberta, Canada.

As the sun was slowly disappearing behind the clouds, I was happy that at least BLS Cargo engine 485 020 and the first few freight cars where not in the shadow part.. Seen here in Priort on May 15th 2021..

Large, black, crow-sized bird with decurved bill and deep red eye. In flight, white in primaries very evident. Struts around in family groups on the ground in open woodland areas around southeastern and eastern Australia. A variety of calls includes a plaintive, descending whistle. (eBird)

----------------

Although totally unrelated to crows, these choughs are just as shy. Everytime we came across a group, they would take off, much like this one is doing. Big, noisy and beautiful, they were fun to watch.

The White-winged Chough is one of only two species in their family. The other is the Apostlebird which looks very different to this bird. They are not related to the Choughs of the northern hemisphere.

Myers Park on Cayuga Lake will get some shorebirds from time to time. So I always check there during migration season. This little Least Sandpiper gave me some nice views and photos. This is my favorite sandpiper species and they are also the smallest shorebird in the world.

I hope everyone enjoys this image!

I have started a blog on my site discussing my switch from DSLR (Canon 90D) to mirrorless (Canon R7) for bird and wildlife photography. It might be useful if you are considering the change to mirrorless, and want to know how the technologies compare.
