Lapis lazuli is a hard blue semi-precious stone prized since antiquity for its intense, permanent color. Its name comes from the Latin words Lapis (= “stone”) and lazulum
(= “blue).
In antiquity, mines located in what is today northeast Afghanistan were the principal source of lapis lazuli, and it was widely traded as a valuable yet scarce commodity. Its use in jewelry and luxury objects goes back many millennia; beads made of lapis lazuli have been found in Neolithic burials. Objects made of, or decorated with, lapis lazuli have been discovered in noteworthy ancient archaeological sites, including the “Royal Necropolis” at Ur in Mesopotamia, and the tomb of King Tutankhamen in Egypt.
Beginning in the late medieval period, lapis lazuli began to be imported into Europe. Ground into a fine powder (not easy to do, since it is quite hard!), it became the pigment base for ultramarine blue, one of the most expensive colors used by Renaissance painters. Because of its value and rarity (at times lapis lazuli cost more than its weight in gold!), ultramarine blue was used to represent the sky of heaven in religious art, and was also used for the robe of the Virgin Mary in paintings of the Madonna and Christ Child. It was truly an act of devotion for a wealthy patron to commission a painter to use ultramarine blue in a painted altarpiece or fresco for a church, since its cost was so extravagant.

Saw some pretty polished blue stones in the scratch patch in a stone shop, collected into a pile they cried out to be pictured.
Lapis lazuli is a vibrant blue rock that is an aggregate of hauynite (which contributes the rich blue colour), sodalite (also blue), noselite and lazurite (an isomorphous combination of hauynite and sodalite). It also generally contains calcite and iron pyrite. For centuries it was ground into a fine powder and made into a highly prized (and expensive) blue pigment whose use was closely controlled by the Catholic church. The Venetians - who ran this trade - eventually broke this stranglehold and the paint was used for more than just the virgin Mary's cloak. Giotto was a great user of ultramarine blue!
Synthetic "French ultramarine" became an affordable alternative in the early 19th century.
The top (light blue line) spectrum comes from the sample in the photograph. The lower spectrum (dark blue) is from a polished stone from Pakistan. The fluorescence spectrum (red line) shows the typical 'disulphide vibronic ripple' from sodalite.
The deep blue colour of lazurite arises from the presence of sulphur in the form of a polysulphide consisting of three sulphur atoms with a single negative charge. It is the charge transfer between orbitals that produces the strong, broad absorption band at 600nm seen in the reflection spectra above. The fluorescence spectrum, however, comes from disulphide: two sulphur atoms again with a single negative charge.
For this photograph, the rock was illuminated with a 6500K LED which somewhat enhances the blue colour.

This attractive object is carved from lapis lazuli, a rare metamorphic rock dominated by a blue feldspathoid mineral called lazurite, (Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(SO4,S,Cl)2 - sodium calcium chloro-sulfo-aluminosilicate-sulfate. The highest-quality lapis lazuil on Earth is from the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan. Other lapis occurrences are Chile and Russia.
Sabe aquele esmalte que você empresta pra deus e o mundo e o coitado já ta quase acabando e você nunca tinha usado? eu não sei se vocês tem um desses mas esse esmalte é o que acontece comigo já perdi as contas de quantas vezes me pediram emprestado esse bonitinho e quando fui ver hoje estava com menos da metade do vidrinho, definitivamente só deu para uma esmaltação e está falecido o coitado preciso de outro mas já quase não vejo mais essa coleção por aqui :(
enfim, esse esmalte é lindo e fazia tempo que eu não usava um fosco! amei com o fundo do meu coração ♥
só mancha um pouco como qualquer esmalte azul desse tipo, mas nada que eu vire um smurf.

Mais um da série "me despedindo dos neons", é claro que ele não é neon, mas é uma cor que não poderei usar mais :(
Eu gostei do monstrinho ai, so que esse efeito tosco fosco dele, sei lá sabe?! hahaha
Não cobriu com duas camadas e eu fiquei com preguiça de passar a terceira.

UPDATE: Hoje 21/05 ele já esta completamente raxado, parece que esta esfarelando haha, e eu estou descascando tudo com prazer!

Entre as nuvens vem surgindo um lindo avião rosa e grená
Tudo em volta colorindo com suas luzes a piscar
Basta imaginar e ele está partindo, sereno e lindo
E se a gente quiser....... Ele vai pousar.
