A week ago, just as the sun peeked over the horizon and I was paddling beneath a hollowed-out cypress trunk on Mud Lake, Mr. Plieated Woodpecker popped out of a hole, stared at me as I stared at him, then quickly flew away for parts unknown. So this morning I approached the cypress with camera already in hand and just as the sun cleared the horizon, Mr. Pileated rolled out of bed again, gave me one brief look and again quickly headed off to work. Sure hope this is his homestead and not just an airbnb.

I know that just like when taking a photo of a train the going away shot hardly ever receives positive acclaim. Photo taken last week on a visit to the nature reserve at Vendicari. The subject a shellduck is seen feeding in typical fashion. These birds feed on the flowing tidal water, but not much around high or low tides, mostly sieving the mud for the tiny snail Hydrobia which forms the overwhelming majority of their diet. They also eat shrimps, small clams Macoma and ragworms; I don't known what the inland breeders feed on.

I know...photographed to death...but I like the tall grass...symbolising the city going to seed?

We all know that Tulips originate not from Holland but from the far-reaching Ottoman Empire. Much has been written about that provenance, and it's particularly relevant to the history of this Horned Tulip. It was described in Europe already in 1753 by great Carolus Linnaeus, who named it for polymath and naturalist Conrad Gesner (1516-1565). He writes that it comes from Cappadocia and was brought to Europe in 1559. Possibly, I might add, through the efforts of Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq (1522-1592), 'Austrian' diplomat to the Ottomans.

A quarter of a century before Linnaeus's description - during the bizarrely luxurious reign of Sultan Ahmed III (1673-1736) between 1703 and 1730 - Ottoman Tulip Craze frilled to a frenzy. That's testified to by a court painter Mehmet, who gives exquisite pictures of some 50 Tulips in his Osmanlı lalesi or Lale mecmuasi of 1725. Many of his flowers boast frills and filaments and quaintness not often seen in Tulips. One of these is this Tulipa acuminata.

I don't know when it was first cultivated in European gardens. But in 1876 Henry Harpur-Crewe (1828-1883), an English theological naturalist, waxes eloquent: "T. acuminata cornuta, with its strange narrow parti-coloured petals, is so quaint and curious that no one who has once grown it likes to be without it".

Here it's a staple of the Amsterdam Botanical Garden.

I know it is not the best shot, but it was a real oppurtunity to get a photo of this female in flight - she was planting her eggs inside the stems of reeds, I may post one of her later actually laying the eggs!

Since Bloodfall as we know it is done, there's no point hiding this guy away. So years ago, before Linda even, I had this idea to put Bloodfall in the neo-Gotham setting of Batman Beyond as sort of a "final season" to him. So I had Billy throw this together. At this point J would basically be a brain in a super powerful robot body with all kinds of crazy xenothium-fueled abilities. But then I had the idea to put Linda in some armor, had a bunch of fun with that, then we got to where we are now. Since this 'fig is cool and Billy worked hard on it I'll be sure it sees some use in the future, but as of now it's just a piece of a future we'll never see.

We do know there was once a great Pictish fort at Burghead, built between 2,000 and 1,500 years ago, though little of it remains today. Tradition held that the hollow visible in the corner of the ancient fort held a well.

When the planned town of Burghead was built in 1808, the well was selected as its water source. Excavations the following year revealed a solid rock chamber, with a flight of stone steps leading down.

Theories about the function of the ‘well’ include:

a shrine to Celtic water deities

a place of ritual execution

an early Christian baptristy

a Pictish cult centre, later converted to Christian use

I know that less is more but sometimes more is more. This could be a simple white flower on a dark background but add a bubble and there is suddenly so much more to explore. I will say that there is no clear area on which to rest your eyes and it feels a bit chaotic but it is definitely more interesting than what I thought I was going to get.

If you are also now playing with bubbles I'd love to see what you are working on.

I know its the second shot of this Vitesse, but I really like it! And except of this silly car in the background, the combo is very nice.

I know . . . I know. I just needed an afternoon away from the same four walls and technology. I took a drive to Rowley to find out that it was completely shut down and couldn't stay. I did get a couple of pics along the way though.

Yes, I know it's truly spring, and I'm posting a truly autumnal piece. Well, I've never been one to stand on ceremony (I'm not even sure that that metaphor is appropriate), but I came across a backup drive for my Windows 7 PC that finally gave up the ghost a year ago this week. That drive has some of my favorite shots from the last 23 years. Today, I'll start with January 2000...

Just kidding. It may be quite a while before there's a method to my madness. We have Monday Dogs (and a new one that I just took yesterday); Wednesday Woodpeckers, and on the drive, there are at least a dozen fairly good Nuttall's from a separate file I made for the year I was able to witness the female making the nest, then the two parents rearing the two chicks, and then them fledging and disappearing from this territory. With the other surprise of a whole file of butterflies, maybe Fridays should be Fluttering Friday. And on and on.

Anyway, there are a few very things that I miss about growing up in Massachusetts. Lobster, fried clams, blue jays, and autumn in a house surrounded by sugar maples. When I found this tree at the beginning of the pandemic, it brightened my mood, but I soon realized that one maple tree does not make for autumn. Still, it's better than nothing.

A word to the wise: If a 1T USB Flash Drive by SanDisk or Western Digital or some other established firm is selling it for $75, and you find a sale by a company whose name you can't pronounce (but think it sounds like one of the medicines you take) is selling it for $28.50, do not go by the price. Soime "USB 3" are "USB 2" and some won't even plug in. That's all I'm going to say, but if someone wants to buy two 1T drives, I'll sell them at the same price I got them for: $28.50.
