Please know, dear Bo, that you are valued and cherished as you should be.

This is Benni's grave. I didn't know him. I found the grave in the largest cemetery in Cologne. Benni's grave, or what can still be seen of it here, seemed almost out of place there, where you can find some magnificent graves of local celebrities. Many thoughts went through my head. Who was Benni? Was he still a child? Why doesn't anyone look after his grave?

And today is the right day to think of him, I think. That's why this picture has a special meaning for me! I'm sure it's also representative of others - because there are many more Benni's lying forgotten in cemeteries.

I don't know much about cannons, I have a hard time seeing how they would be widely effective without an exploding round. Sure they could prove to make a lot of damamge. But the weight of moving these things around, could the same damage been done if it were men pound for pound.

That's not the real reason why the mountain has such name, (Pink Mountain) but I can say that yesterday it has really deserved it. The Massif, as seen from more than 150km, with a 400mm, at the sunset, when the peaks are covered with snow, takes a peculiar pink color while a sea of fog was covering the whole Padanian lowland. Some birds are crossing the frame, who can see them?

Sly eye baby fox knows what's coming. These curious baby foxes came out to play while moma was out getting food. Having a den in the middle of a town must be very interesting for these pups.

I know that this is the most popular waterfall of Oregon. It is spectacular and secondly, you can park the car on the highway and just walk there. Indeed, when I arrived the place was packed. Therefore, I know there would thousands of images of this waterfall taken that day. However, I think very few of these images would be without people on the bridge on that day. Patience sometimes may help. At the end I can add this to my collection of waterfall...(-:

There is only one place I know where I can consistently find these large turtles. I did not find out what they were called until just today.I had thought they were a larger variety of a Painted Turtle. But there coloration is different and they have grooved in maps on their shell rather than the smoother more green Painted Turtle.

“The Summer Knows” by Michel LeGrand (Movie theme from “The Summer of ’42”)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWMxX5MGuHI

I know this engine house has been photographed dozens of times before, but I'm afraid I find it irresistible. So I thought I'd try it from a different angle. This is the Towanroath Shaft engine house on the side of the cliffs in between St Agnes and Chapel Porth on the north coast of Cornwall. It is part of the Wheal Coates mine complex.

Earliest records indicate a mine at the site since 1692. The present mine opened in 1802 and came into full production in 1815. At the height of its production, 140 people were employed at the site to mine a seam of tin just below sea level. It closed for the first time in 1844 and was allowed by the owners to flood.

A new owner re-opened the mine in 1872 and built the Towanroath Shaft engine house to allow deep mining to commence. The engine house was used to pump water from the adjacent shaft which was 600 feet deep - well below sea level.

The mine closed again in 1889 when the price of tin fell. In 1906, new ownership hoped to work the mine for both tin and copper as Wheal Coates had produced a small amount of copper ore more than a century earlier. The period of operation from 1911-1913 was not very successful because tin production was sporadic and the mining boom was long gone. The mine closed for good in 1914.

Most of the mine buildings, which are Grade II-listed and from the 1870s, are on the top of the cliff out of shot. These, plus the Towanroath engine house, are preserved and maintained by the National Trust.

I know, I posted a Junco yesterday, too, but I really liked the wing position on this one so I decided to share it today

I also like how this shows off the orange feathers on its back.

I know I shouldn't really, but I think this might be one of my favourite portraits I've ever taken :) The only thing I might do differently, could I change it, would be to maybe include a little more foreground to balance it out a little better.

I've a had a lot of difficulty thinking of a title for this one...and then I thought, well, maybe it dosn't need a title. I think a title can add or take away a lot of what you get from a picture, everyone's going to see it differently, so for this one, I'd just like you to add your own, and get your own feeling from it :)

I know I said no more panning shots for a bit but I couldn't resist. Big thank you to the rider who spotted me and made the shot by giving me a cheeky smile:)

Everyone knows about the Sunrise and Paradise entrances into Mount Rainier National Park, those who enjoy the long beautiful drive go around to the Stevens Canyon entrance, but the lonely forgotten washed out Carbon River entrance is still there, you just have to walk it. I'm not fond of this pic, but it does show what the hike in looks like walking through 800 year old Douglas Firs. It's dark and where the light beams in the rays cause magic steam. the boughs hundreds of feet above you creek and a lot of them are falling. Moss inches thick covers the ground and down trees and more trees grow out of them. It's a tree lovers paradise as long as there isn't any wind. You walk on what was once the road which follows the river so it's sound is ever present and small waterfalls can be heard inland as well. It's damp, it was cold, the smell was amazing and my face still hurts from smiling. More (and better) shots to come.

blow it up large and take a look around. :-)

As you know the "Golden" gate bridge is not literally golden or is golden in color ... which made me think about this concept !

I thought doing a very long exposure and catching the particularly yellow/white reflections of passing cars' headlights might fix that problem ! So I headed to the vista point at night and after a few tries with different durations and white balances I managed to get the Golden Gate to look Golden, as it should have in the first place (!).

It was a particularly cold night and I couldn't feel my hands after this, so I really hope you enjoy this one !

"The more you know, the more you can create. There's no end to imagination in the kitchen."

Julia Child

I believe that Julia Child was referring to the cooking process being involved in imagination. However, often I am easily distracted from the task at hand.

Being in the kitchen with sliced food or small kitchen tools, I see those items as photographic subjects. I think it's good to let one's imagination run wild...within limits, I suppose. :)

::: Nina Nesbitt - I'm Coming Home :::

I’m driving down these old dirt roads

I see the hills up on the right

White grass, artificial ski slope

Im speeding by the east coast train line

I’ve got a friend talking on the phone

He said he’d help me pass the time

I’m where the humour is dry as a bone

but it rains here every night

To see the faces that I know

Been away for way too long,

Where the trees always growin’

Wanna see where time has gone,

So put the kettle on the stove

Leave a light on so they know I’m coming home

I’ve got the wind in my sails

I’ve got the red in my cheeks

Cause I’ve been running from this place

Ever since seventeen

Cobbled streets

Evergreens

Castles and

housing schemes

That whisky taste

Out till late

See that man

He’s shitfaced

To see the faces that I know

Been away for way too long

So put the kettle on the stove

Leave a light on so they know

I’m coming home

Flashback I’m seventeen

in the passenger seat

You roll the windows down

808s and heartbreak plays

Even in this small town

We still had the biggest dreams

I always wanted something more

I always wanted to be seen

Still got that northern blood

I’ve still got a sharp edged tongue

I hold it like a sword

So everyone knows where I’m from

You take for granted all the things

That one day will be gone

I should’ve for held on for dear life

When I was young

I walk through the trees

I see the green

I see the reservoir

I see the nights

I see the lights

I see my family fall apart

I know the leaving

know the feelings

Know the seasons change

Things are different now

But I still feel the same

I’ve been around I’ve seen it all

There’s nowhere else I’d rather go

So won’t you let them know

I’m coming home

I think this is a juvenile Male, but if not, maybe one of my bird watching friends will let me know. I do know that I've had a male and female cardinal at my feeder and now a couple of newbies are showing up.

After being shut out the night before by a stubborn storm that refused to break up over Jasper National Park, we had our fingers crossed as we headed back to Maligne Lake the following morning. We all seemed pretty happy with our blue hour shots, but as sunrise approached, it really began to look like we might not see the sun at all that day. I think we had all resigned ourselves to the fact that we were looking at another completely gray day when I glanced up an noticed the faintest wisp of pink on one of the clouds. Sure enough, the sun broke through just enough to throw some fleeting color across the the clouds that were continuing to roll in from the West. I think Tom and I are the ones in our group who really have a problem standing still during moments like this. Both of us went off in all directions at once, and both of us had two camera bodies for just such an occasion. Leaving my D800 on the tripod, I took off running with my D750 and cranked up the ISO a bit while I looked for other comps in addition to what I was getting down at the lakeside.

As I was racing back to my spot in front of the boat house, this puddle caught my eye and I spent the next few minutes trying to shoot if from several different angles with the 14-24. There have been times where I have doubted my run and gun approach, but I usually reserve it for situations where I feel like I've got a decent shot on the tripod before setting of to see what I might be missing maybe just a few steps away. If I had stayed camped out where I was I would have missed this particular shot along with quite a few others. We ALL gave in to temptation two nights before when we had a perfectly good view of the late afternoon sun up at the Opabin Prospect, but curiosity got the better of us and we full out RAN back up the trail to get more shots of the larches behind us. So I think there is something to be said for making sure you KEEP MOVING once you believe you have a decent shot...especially when you might only have another few minutes of good light.

This being said, it helps to be able to TRUST the guys who you are shooting next to. Maybe leaving the camera on the tripod while you run like a maniac in all directions should be reserved for those times when you actually know the people around you...or you might not have a camera when you get back. :)

You just never know when you're going to get a chance to get a special capture. I had very little expectations today - and then the house thermostat broke. So I stopped late in the afternoon to do a Lowe's curbside pick-up and as I drive through the JC Penny parking lot I see a dozen birds feeding in a tree - hmph - I figure they must be Robins. I decide to take a closer look - mother-of-pearl, one of my favorite birds - Cedar Waxwings. Oh yeah, this day just got immensely better. .

the light was luscious on the path today...

I know the school of thought that you should ask a human subject for permission to take their picture, which I agree is nice for some situations, but it doesn't allow you to capture the unselfconscious ballet of human behavior. (Here, admittedly, self-consciousness is on display, but that's the charming point.) We in fact did interact before and after I shot this, and they were aware that I was there shooting them shooting each other.

As you know by now, I love when artists use music to tell a story, weaving the music and the lyrics into a tale filled with emotion and colours. Don McLean is one of those Artists who masterfully achieve this. Vincent is an Ode to the dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853 - 1890). He struggled with mental illness all through his life and died at his own hands at the age of just 37. During his life, he barely sold any of his paintings. Which makes the fact that these days they are worth millions kind of a cruel joke. Don McLean weaved numerous paintings of VanGogh into his Lyrics, which is another nice touch

Vincent - Don McLean

Starry, starry night

Paint your palette blue and gray

Look out on a summer's day

With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills

Sketch the trees and the daffodils

Catch the breeze and the winter chills

In colors on the snowy, linen land

Now, I understand what you tried to say to me

And how you suffered for your sanity

And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how

Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night

Flaming flowers that brightly blaze

Swirling clouds in violet haze

Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue

Colors changing hue

Morning fields of amber grain

Weathered faces lined in pain

Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now, I understand, what you tried to say to me

How you suffered for your sanity

How you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how

Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you

But still your love was true

And when no hope was left inside

On that starry, starry night

You took your life as lovers often do

But I could have told you, Vincent

This world was never meant for one

As beautiful as you

Starry, starry night

Portraits hung in empty halls

Frameless heads on nameless walls

With eyes that watch the world and can't forget

Like the strangers that you've met

The ragged men in ragged clothes

The silver thorn of bloody rose

Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now, I think I know what you tried to say to me

How you suffered for your sanity

How you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they're not listening still

Perhaps they never will

Looking Close... on Friday: Hobby

I collect the bones of poor dead creatures I find to show the children at my Child Care Centre.

Here I have a tiny bird skull, maybe a rat, one I don't know and a baby crocodile skull in the background (from Kakadu N.T. Australia).

I also have snake, legless lizard, wombat, cow, goat, sheep ...

many in a Display Case for the children to see up close with magnifying glasses.

It's amazing to compare tiny snake backbones with large cow backbones and then feel our own :)

Most of you know by now how I love 'playing' with light, a never ending beautiful challenge, food for my creative soul, which I so desperately need at the moment...

Each flower or object, most definitely people, seem to have a different 'personality' which I'm trying to capture.

Alstroemeria, the genus named after the Swedish baron Alströmer who brought them back from a trip to South America in 1753.

Also called the Peruvian Lily or Inca Lily, is a South American genus of about 50 species of flowering plants.

The flower, which resembles a miniature lily, is very popular for bouquets and flower arrangements in the commercial cut flower trade.

They have a vase life of about two weeks.

Sows with cubs are known to be quite protective with their cubs. Everyone knows not to mess with a mama bear ... well except for the big boars who roam around with one thing in mind. They will do anything to get some "alone time" with the females, including kill their cubs so that they will be available. It's honestly one of the things that I fear the most when I'm out photographing the sows with cubs. I remember one day seeing a sow with 2 or 3 young spring cubs fishing a stream, then they disappeared. A while later we could hear screaming of the little ones and I feared the worse. I asked our guide if he thought the cubs were being attacked by a big boar we had also seen in the vicinity. He said no because the crying out was so prolonged. If it had been a boar attacking a cub, it would have been over long ago. We eventually found the little cubs way up in a tree ... unharmed. Whoever said only black bears climb trees?

So, this brown bear cub in the image wasn't one of those cubs, but it is another one seeking the same safety from a board in the area. Its mom sensing the danger for her cubs will send them literally scurrying up the nearest tree for safety. She will then fiercely defend against the boar. When it's safe, she will give a signal to the cubs who will shimmy on down the tree to reunite with mom.

These cubs in the trees are one of the cutest sights ever. So on alert and anxious about the frantic activity going on. They never question mom when she alerts them and promptly obey. So darned smart and adorable to watch.

Well, it's Monday again. Only 1 more after today before 2022. Yikes, where is the time going?

I know it's a sheep and not a bear , but we went to a great gig last night in Bristol, seeing Sea Power , a favourite band. One of Sue's favourite songs was Bear , and I had it as her ring tone so the opening riff reminds me of her texting or calling me. It was a great gig of largely more laidback songs including scores they did for the award winning Game Disco Elysium, so there were lots of younger fans there in costume. It was great for me to go with my three daughters, all in all a wonderful night. So Bear by Sea Power is the title of this beautiful sunrise.

You want to be me...
