The Aurora Borealis put on quite a show last night. I rushed out to catch some of it and I could have been better prepared. Standing around with my camera at -25C in a pair of Jeans isn't the smartest way to go. To say I was cold is a bit of an understatement. Still, I did get a few nice shots before I absolutely had to come home. It was one of the most spectacular shows I've seen in many many years. The greens and reds were dancing all over the sky. In this photo, I captured near the end of my time out there, the lights were really truly kicking off. They were dancing all over the sky in front of me above me and behind me. A few other cars had also arrived with people to look and wonder at the majesty of it all.

Mid 1950's Simplex Automatic

Simplex was founded by Paul Treen (father of United States Congressman and Louisiana Governor David Conner Treen) in New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 1920s with an initial investment of $25.00 Treen had been a dealer in Harley-Davidson motorcycles and had pitched them the idea of making a lightweight motorcycle for young riders. When Harley-Davidson rejected the idea, Treen decided to enter the market himself and designed his Servi-Cycle. The Simplex Servi-Cycle was introduced in 1935.

Although Simplex Manufacturing Corporation produced motorcycles for over 20 years, the last Simplex Automatics looked almost the same as the company's original 1935 Simplex Servi-Cycle motorcycle. Paul Treen would often visit the factory's tool shop and work with the engineers on new ideas himself, resulting in continuous improvements to Simplex products instead of annual new model introductions.

The two-stroke engine had a rotary valve and an "overhung" crankshaft with only one main bearing. A kick-starter was added by 1953.

Western Auto sold Simplex motorcycles under the Wizard brand in the mid-1950s.

Simplex's minimalist philosophy was maintained throughout the company's history, whose designs changed little after 1935. By the 1950s Simplex's designs were primitive, leading to the end of Servi-Cycle and Automatic production in 1960. Simplex continued to make minibikes and karts using proprietary small engines until 1975, when Simplex went out of business. Treen had sold the company three years earlier, in 1972

I got this shot of Kara, the Kickboxer, practicing her Jumping Spinning Kick. She's quite fierce! :-)

Well, what else would you do on a motorbike other than take off horizontally?

Robin and I have been working nonstop remodeling a house. This is the first photo I've shot, outdoors, with a real camera, in 5 months. Whew.......need to just sit and watch a sunrise....ya know.

My son the defender. The striker.

I almost did as I photographed items of interest at Dawn.

Kick it...because this kick drum looks oh so inviting.

CSX train Q635(24) heads west through Guilderland, NY with a lash up consisting of a YN2 GE, 2 SD40-2s and EX LMS 7929. Not a bad lashup for the Selkirk sub. Minutes before we shot this, local police kicked us off of the abandoned overpass, in an attempt to quickly relocate before the train arrived, we ended up at the construction company next door, little did we know we would soon run into some pissed off ground bees in the process of climbing the dirt mounds.

The opening lines of the Beastie Boys 1986 classic “Fight For Your Right” seemed fitting for this scene of DM&IR 215 and company kicking the last two cars of the cut in to their respective tracks. Railroading sure isn’t what it was back in 1986, not is the music or much else really. Still it’s nice to see some of the old ways still in action.

Taken during summer on the Kicking Horse River.
