I had a chance to spend some time chatting with a Elkton MD resident who grew up near this bridge.

While we talked, he mentioned the arson fire that burned down this bridge in 1987.

A great effort was made to recover as much of the original wood as possible for the rebuilding, and if you look at the floor in this picture, you will see small indentations, which are the remains of where the bails of hay where used to start the fire.

Some of the vertical post still have charring from the fire

The two men responsible for the bridge fire are still in jail, and have been linked to other arson attacks in the area.

"In the 9th Century AD, the Pope reportedly decreed that every church in Europe should prominently display a cock on its dome or steeple as a reminder of Jesus' prophecy that the cock would not crow the morning after the Last Supper, until the disciple Peter had denounced Him three times (Luke 22:34). Originally these cocks were just static figures but eventually they evolved into rooster-shaped wind vanes. It is not known exactly when these church steeple roosters were converted to weathercocks or vanes, but mention of cocks turning with the wind in Chaucer's works suggest that this had occurred by at least the thirteenth or fourteenth century in England. (Curiously, Roman Catholic churches are no longer capped by weathercocks, and the ecclesiastical roosters found today generally top Protestant churches, both in Europe and America.)"

This decor is a monument in Hyner View State Park. The shape formed by the cement on the ground is a keystone, the state symbol. I am not sure what a keystone is! This park a beautiful place on the top of a mountain in Hyner, PA. We found it by accident while driving around. The viewpoint here is in Hyner View State Park. This view point is only open in the late spring to early fall months.
