For the first time in a long time I was completely uninspired for today's project 365 shot!

I even drew a blank from my list of 365 possibilities!

Then, as nighttime came, I saw my alarm system keypad glowing in the darkness, and I knew what I wanted to shoot!

I'm actually quite pleased with how its turned out, but I hope tomorrow is more inspirational!

If you do a lot of labeling, on object that is, this new Dymo LabelManager Plug and Play will be extremely helpful. I love Dymo for their embossers, especially those made in the old days (this, this and this), but really hate those electronic ones with keypads on them. They are clumsy to type, difficult to choose the right font and size without wasting a few inches of tapes. Worst of all, if you loose the manual, it will be very difficult to find out how to get that special character you knew its there inside.

This plug and play model is easy to, well no need to install, just plug in to your Mac or PC, a built-in flash memory appears as a disk on your computer where you will find the software to run. It is that easy. Simply start typing, changing the font as you would on your typical word processor and press print. It uses the fonts available on your computer so you don't need to feel like being forced to accept ugly fonts from the machine. Works great on Chinese and Hong Kong specific characters.

If you press enter during your typing, the font automatically shrink about half the size and you can do double line, triple or more within the height of the D1 tape. One interesting feature is screen capture. Just press a button in the software and your cursor changes to crosshair for selecting part of your screen, once done the captured image will appear right on the on-screen tape and you can print right away. Resolution is of course low and dithered, but that allows you to quickly put a company logo or small images on tapes.

It will be available at city'super soon selling at HK$680 with free gift (I heard that it will be a 2GB USB memory while stock last). Here's the promotional video of the machine.

So tonight, I graciously decided to let my cousin Dalton bring his friends back to the pool provided Cody stay away from the beverages. But this time it was Cameron who got out of hand. He kept going on and on about Miss Virden and 'them digits'. When I said it was a no go he got sassy and started asking too many questions. I wasn't having any of it, so I had to put him in his place and remind him who's the boss. I also let him know that my cousin Robin would have worked him over twice as bad. Cody got a kick out of it and kept mocking with "Look who just got punked!" Guess he had enough of Cameron giving him hell for pissing in our pool Sunday.

Ok, so nobody got "punked", nor did anyone receive a beat down. But that black eye is real. No, I said I didn't give it to him dammit. And since the black eye was real and Cody and Cameron wanted to do another photo with me, I whipped out the "No More Mr. Nice Guy" concept I've been wanting to do for a while now and ran with that black eye...

Even the Iphone keypad is sexy lol

This is a current state snapshot of some icons I've been trying to churn out for the X-Keys keypad for controlling my mini mill. The hotkeys I've mapped, and where I've mapped them can be found in the previous screencap.

I think the Increase/Decrease Jog Speed buttons will be some form of the usual rabbit/turtle dichotomy, stretching my skillz to their absolute limit :) The X, Y, Z, and A are actual letters, so I can't fuss much with their presentation. I'd like them to be thicker, though, and I will likely go back and make them bold. It might be nice to have the E-STOP letters be hollow, with a thick black outline, and a red fill, but I only have a black laser printer. Maybe I can just paint them in with a red Sharpie. These are just printout keycap button legends, after all.

I haven't decided on the directional/clockness buttons look yet, either. They don't match above, because I'm testing ideas, though I kind of like the yin-yang effect of each being the others inverse. The buttons do double duty, because with my configuration, I must select a current axis with X, Y, Z, or A, and then increment/decrement with - and + (actually with - and =, because EMC2 doesn't recognize the actual plus (i.e. shift+=)).

I must also decide what graphic I want to represent "program," for the "Reload Program," "Run Program," and "Stop Program" buttons. At first I was thinking things like a play triangle, recycle loop, and stop sign around a "C:\>," but then realized how very Windows that is, and I'm not even using Windows at home now, so forget that. Then I thought of something like those ideas, but with #/bin/sh, but I think I just want to get rid of the whole idea of text. Maybe a little computer logo with those things on its screen, or surrounding it would work.

As for continuous, and incremental jog, I just don't know. I considered a jogger in profile leaving a solid, or dotted line, but that seems a lot to convey in a small square, and probably not very obvious anyway. I also thought of something like a bee's flight path shown solid, or dashed. Again, kinda weak.

The core concept for all of these buttons is not to make flashy Mac/Vista icons with glass, and smooth gradients, but to make something very simple, very high contrast, and very readable at a glance, like warning signs. You don't want to mistake a button, or press the wrong one when working with machines with motors, and sharp, spinning bits.

It's a kind of sad photography right of passage to take some crummy macro shots when you first get a macro lens, so this and the bed sheets are mine. I'll try for a better picture next time.

This ATM keypad overlay allows the underlying keypad to function properly while it stores all keystrokes put into an ATM (i.e., your PIN).

Today was a somber day. I went to my good friend Jason Flowers fathers funeral visitation. Later in the evening I went to our city park to do this photo. Being the same age, Jason (#27 of 365 Project) & I grew up together here in our hometown- our friendship goes back to grade school. Oh how time slips by us so quickly. I attended for him and his family despite my disdain for the experience. I'm no stranger to death might I add. After graduating college for mortuary science in 2000 and working in the profession for four years, I now have mixed feelings on the industry. My personal opinion is that it's a depressing, outdated standard that takes advantage of people in their most vulnerable time. Why? The cost of the average funeral is $6500 and can easily reach $10,000 after you factor in burial plot, flowers and other costs. The markup funeral directors gain is astronomical. All of this can be avoided by choosing direct cremation- a loved one can be laid to rest with dignity for less than $800 and having a get together back at your residence. Also something I find disturbing is the gross misuse of resources and materials the casket industry wastes only to be placed into the earth!? Not to forget the chemical formaldehyde- a carcinogen, once in the ground is seeping into our planet poisoning our waterways. Yes, death is a part of life. I personally do not need to see a friend or family member lying in a casket to come to grips with reality. It's not how I want to remember them- I would rather remember them as they were without that final, traumatic image. Again, these are only my thoughts on why I feel this process is a huge waste of money, resources and land. There are more safe, sustainable alternatives. Regardless of my opinions, my heart goes out wholly to my buddy Jason and his family this week... If you read this and you need someone to talk to or hang out with call me and I'll be there.

This is what I see when my phone decides to hate me today

Editorial shooting for KEYPAD Magazine Sept / OCT issue 9.

A flip phone with keypad, considered cutting edge when the Kamen Rider Faiz series debuted a decade ago, may look quaint and old timey today but surprisingly, these gara-kei (phones embodying Galapagos syndrome) still do well in Japan.
