I don't know who was more surprised: The Peacock for having a guy show up unexpectedly - in biking outfit - with a camera or me for being able to get that close!

Required sibling shot on the sandbar in the unbelievably shallow Gulf...it looked better further away, but I'm attempting to bring back the fifties with my sarong suit and Dad's "lady golf hat."

I think this is one of the few trees left from the concrete rehab of Hobie Beach--guess it isn't even called that anymore! I miss the old days!!!!!

Key Biscayne, Fla.: ADA beach wheelchairs usually come in two varieties -- one with elevated leg support and one without -- and some include an umbrella stand and drink holder. Her, Kenny Civil, a longtime member of Shake-a-Leg Miami enjoys getting down to the waters edge. The staff and volunteers at Shake-a-Leg Miami are passionate about getting people of all abilities out on the water.

These 2 were inseparable over the course of several days of shooting following the passage of TS Isaac. I couldn't help but wonder if they formed a bond weathering the storm together.

The little Semipalmated Plover migrated all the way from the tundra region above Canada to experience a tropical storm in south FL. As I watched it I saw the "foot trembling" feeding method as it jiggled the sand with its forward foot. (Thanks so much to Dave 2X for giving me his awesome shorebird book,"The Shorebird Guide", when he relocated from the USA to Taiwan.) Thanks Dave....you are forever present in my birding life....lol)

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

Yesterday I drove back to Crandon Beach Park in the late afternoon to shoot a Heron with her chicks. An experience I've never had and always wanted to photograph too. I got stuck in traffic and I didn't make it into the park area until sunset. About an hour too late!

A few weeks ago I saw a bird flying in and out of a tree, with a large pond in between, in almost perfect striking distance for my Canon 400mm lens on my 7D. At that time I made a mental note to check back if there was a nest building going on. I forgot.

Then, last Thursday, during my morning bike ride resting stop at the park, I saw action in the tree again. This time I saw the nest. In order to even have a chance to shoot a decent picture I would have to come back in the afternoon for lighting, with proper boots and jeans - to find a way through the ground to shoot at a closer distance - and at least bring a monopod. And that's what I did yesterday.

Pushing my luck, I ended up shooting almost by nightfall, At ISO 1200 and 1/250s without IS. Framed in camera. No cropping. Let's say I'm extremely happy with the outcome of this image, and very thankful for today's post technology, besides the image quality of my just-serviced Canon lens!

I will try to be back at this nest's location, to shoot more of these images, before the little ones take off. And for sure, I'll be there a little earlier in the afternoon.
