Dogs greet the Greenpeace ship MY Arctic Sunrise as it docks at Key West Fla., Aug. 13, 2010. Several teams of independent scientists will join the crew on board the Arctic Sunrise for the next three months, to conduct a series of scientific research programs that will further understanding of the impacts of both oil and chemical dispersants on the Gulf ecosystem in the aftermath of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A BP leased drilling platform exploded April 20 killing 11 workers and causing a leak of millions of barrels of oil from a wellhead one mile deep 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Finally capped in August, the leak was treated with a million gallons of Corexit, a toxic dispersant. by Todd Warshaw

At 19 feet above sea level Lignumvitae Key is the HIGHEST point above sea level in the Keys which beats the island of Key West's Solares Hill by 1 foot. This dark green island is covered in rare tropical hardwoods such as the island's namesake, Holywood Lignumvitae. It is a great spot to kayak to if you can find a launch point. I think I have found that spot and will explore the island in the future. It is uninhabited and has been turned into a botanical park only accessible by boat.
