We came across this Black-Crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) just off the trail at Circle B Bar Reserve (CBBR) near Lakeland, Florida. Initially, he appeared to be sleeping but then he opened his left eye. It may be that one way birds lose body heat is through their beaks. This guy seems to be keeping his beak warm by tucking it under his feathers. He measures 23-28 inches (58-70 cm) from beak-tip to tail-tip.

It doesn’t take a complicated subject with a busy background or foreground to capture my attention. Beauty can be as easy as some might say “Keeping It Simple,” Beauty can speak to us in its most basic form, simplicity. Thanks for viewing my work. Gratitude and Kindness can also be simple.

Fledgling owl and adult cozy up.
This is the first GHO nest of the season for me. I got some info that there is at least one other family nearby. I've seen as many as three active GHO nests in this area. Great fun to watch the fledglings develop their strength and courage to move about in the trees.
A Sandhill Crane keeps a wary eye open while its companion grabs a bite. I really love those heart-shaped red marks on their foreheads, seen on the feeding bird... Vicinity of Jasper Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in Indiana

I watched this osprey for a full half hour, hoping to see it strike but it was quite content staying perched in the same place in this tree.
Santa Fe SD75M No. 228 glides up the west slope of Olathe Hill on the Emporia Subdivision headed for Chicago with Q-LANY9-09.
Somewhere on the far west end of the railroad, these cars were setout bad order from a hot train and to make their scheduled arrival in Chicago, Santa Fe ran this special train when repairs were complete to get them to the Windy City. Needless to say, this train was hotter than anything on the railroad.
Santa Fe was truly special when it came to handling its intermodal traffic.
Redefining birdbath once again, this little wild one found a swimming hole that was just the right fit.

Joshua 1:6-7
New International Version
6 Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.
7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.
Sitting silently on the prairie like a lone sentinel, this old barn that is no longer needed by modern agriculture sits patiently waiting in the constant dread that someday soon it will be sold to the barn wood recyclers and that in the end it will be used merely to decorate the walls of a suburban steak house restaurant. With lumber prices skyrocketing, it’s only a matter of time. So is the fate of all workers who are no longer needed in a modern economy. You will be repurposed.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

My photostream is becoming quite gingery. I tried to focus on Ella this week for Happy Caturday but let's face it - it's tough in the winter. She and I spend our day in dark little office room, she's in the shadow of the computer monitor and when she sleeps, she's pretty much a skinny black blob. Not even her green eyes show up. So I'll keep trying for Ella. In the meantime, here's Mack napping on not one, but two, fleece blankets.
Happy Caturday: Keeping warm
Hard to believe a fish this big was in a shallow tidal pond. The Heron stabbed it with its sharp bill and flew around the pond area trying to outrun other Heron and an Eagle. I think my proximity to the Heron may have made the Eagle think twice about going in for the grab. This is a big crop, the long bed of seaweed is extremely slippery.
