Carnaval de QuΓ©bec Canada

The Quebec Winter Carnival or the Carnaval de QuΓ©bec is a festival held in Quebec City.

After being held on and off since 1894, the Carnaval de QuΓ©bec has been held uninterruptedly since 1955. That year Bonhomme, the mascot of the festival, made his first appearance. Bonhomme – short for bonhomme de neige ("snowman") is the official ambassador of the festivities, the castle lord of the Ice Palace. Bonhomme is a large snowman sporting a red cap, black buttons and a ceinture flΓ©chΓ©e (colorful sash).

Up to one million people attended the Carnaval de QuΓ©bec in 2006 making it one of the largest winter festivals in the world.

via Instagram Dutch Harbor, AK. A devastatingly beautiful landscape. Bleak yet full of life. The oceans abound with protein that gets harvested and taken all over the world. In 2013 more than 752,000,000, yes 752million, pounds of fish were offloaded and shipped out. Opinions on the fishing industry aside, that is an incredible human feat to harvest, process, and distribute that amount of anything, in a year. This place is fascinating. Two islands along this chain were taken by the Japanese during world war 2, the U.S. had thousands of troops out here and battlements, this harbor was of strategic significance. Artifacts date inhabitants of the islands back 8000 years! Needless to say, I've kept myself entertained. Like mom used to say, "boredom is a choice." #keepexploring #boredomisachoice #yearofthegoshawk #dutchharbor #unalaska ift.tt/1iFzFoM

The Canadian Tulip Festival / Festival Canadien des Tulipes in Ottawa the capital city of Canada

The Canadian Tulip Festival began after the Second World War, when Princess Juliana of the Netherlands presented Ottawa with 100,000 tulip bulbs as a token of friendship in 1945.

Canada had provided asylum for the Dutch royal family during the war and played a strong role in the Netherlands’ liberation. While the royal family sought refuge in Ottawa, Princess Juliana gave birth to Princess Margriet on January 19th 1943 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. The Canadian government temporarily declared the room β€œDutch soil,” to ensure that the Princess would remain in line for the throne.

The Netherlands continues to give Ottawa 20,000 tulip bulbs every year.

Ottawa’s first Canadian Tulip Festival took place in May 1953 and opened with an inauguration ceremony at Parliament Hill.

The Canadian Tulip Festival has grown into the largest annual display of tulips in North America.

The Canadian Tulip Festival is also a celebration of the return of spring, with over a million tulips in 50 varieties blooming in public spaces across the National Capital Region.
