Stella Bella Blue celebrates la Fête du Canada!

Not the greatest start to Canada Day this morning as the dark clouds roll in over Orangeville with the rain not far behind it. Still raining here as of mid afternoon but the weather man says it should clear out in time for the fireworks. Happy Canada Day to all.

Happy Birthday to Canada.

You turn 141 years old, the Calgary tower with it's flame lit turns 40 and everyone sitting on Scotsman Hill enjoys the entertainment as the fireworks display over City Hall.

Happy Canada Day to all Canadians!

How lucky we all are to live in a country that provides us with amazing freedom to do what we want to do and to be who we hope to be. Something to be remembered and thankful for, each and every day! I have lived here since July 1978 and would never want to live elsewhere.

"Beavers are native to Canada and have been considered Canada's national icon for 300 years.

However, they were once endangered throughout much of their range due to over-hunting for their thick fur. Thanks to conservation efforts, reintroduction and better protection of floodplain habitats, they have made a remarkable comeback over the last century. In Canada, they are found in rivers, creeks and lakes. They have even been observed in creeks and rivers within many major cities." From The Nature Conservancy.

.... My favorite neighborhood to spend Canada Day in Toronto, is East York, where the Canada Day Celebration Festival takes place. East York's Canada Day starts with a grand parade and ends at Stan Wadlow Park, with Canada Day activities, music, and lots of food and fun!

An original photograph taken before the Battle. From GHQ

British losses 481,842

French losses 250,000

German losses 537,918.

My God such slaughter. lt was the largest battle ever fought on the Western Front.

lt was one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

More than one million men were killed or wounded.

On the first day alone the British suffered 57,470 casualties.19,240 of these were killed.

it was a battle that first saw use of the tank

There was a week long bombardment of the German lines before the battle which saw 1,738,000 shells fired by the British.

We should learn a lesson from all of this hell !!

How many families felt pain from loss.

I'm tired and I want to go to bed...

I had a little drink about half an hour ago...

and it went right to my head...

Oooh-so show me the way to go home...

( just an old tune from the by-gone days, guess you could call it a " war song ").

A repost.

Wishing all my fellow Canadians a really happy and SAFE Canada Day Take great care on the roads if you are going to be driving! How lucky we all are to live in a country that provides us with amazing freedom to do what we want to do and to be who we hope to be. Something to be remembered and thankful for, each and every day! A special wish and thank-you for all those Canadians who are serving our country, especially overseas! Now, if only the winters weren't so cold : )

One can't celebrate Canada Day without remembering the many Indigenous people and their long-time suffering. Though we have known about the many residential schools across the country and the mistreatment of their students who were removed from their families, the recent discoveries of unmarked graves of hundreds of children has really brought this issue to light. At long, long last, something is being done about this whole issue and these lost souls can be given the dignity that they so greatly deserve.

"Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada) is the national day of Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as among Canadians internationally." From Wikipedia.

This photo was taken on 27 June 2018, when I was at the Reader Rock Garden, looking across to the Stampede Grounds. The wind helped the flag stay unfurled, but was not helpful at all when trying to photograph the flowers.
