There is a very dominating idea that silverware has to be precious and sacred and I recall a lot of shocked faces when I explained my idea of cutting slit's into my hand raised bowls. I worked on them for weeks -even having to start over from the beginning several weeks into it, and I wanted to take the piece beyond what was assumed to be complete.

And my congratulations.
At this point in the second year I had decided that everything I had designed and made was interchangeable somehow and I thought it was time to move on from that idea. That is of course when we get given the brief that specifically asks for an interchangeable necklet.
I envisioned a bike messanger and the ultra hip 20 something guy dressed in orange and on a speedy bike in New York traffic, Chrome bag over the shoulder and a necklet that could replace the key chain.
Project number two during my first year at KIAD was to dress Miss Natalie Portman for the the premiere of the above mentioned Star Wars movie. We were asked to create something that would tie in with the concept of the movie but still be contemporary piece of jewellery.
I created an over-sized ring that was to be worn in a very regal way.
The ring can be worn with your palm both facing upwards and down. The intention was that the piece would appear regal, gracious and somewhat spellbinding. To add an extra feature to the whole idea and make it more contemporary, the sphere comes un-done in halves and fits a lipstick and other small items perfectly.
Silver plated gilding metal sphere and removable ring part, with nylon chords, bezel set cz's and faux pearls.
Our second project in the second year; which we had been encourage to design over the summer, was to be based on nature and all things organic; which was something I dreaded as it seemed all girls drew was flowers in their sketch books. I wanted to be original and decided to work with the scientific approach to nature and the plants and flowers found within it. With a sister who studied cell biology I raided her books for genetics pictures and diagrams.
I had also planted some house leeks at home in the garde that summer and loved the spider web ones that invited you to caress them.
Our third project was to study modern architecture and create a piece of silversmithing based on our found inspiration. I chose to base my work on a building in my home country, Finland. I was working with the lines of Kiasma, the museum of modern Art in Helsinki, that was created by architect Steven Holl.
The legs, the rosewood as well as the metal one rotate around the stem. Silver plated gilding metal.
There is an inside layer that pulls out of the inside half circle and comes around the back of the neck and slides back into position to form a complete circle.
On the inside of the two parallel curves there is velcro and specially made attachment holders that sticks into position.
I ended up making spirit levels fixed into position of the little attachments, but the idea was that you could have them shaped to hold anything.
My greatest achievement with this project was that the spirit levels worked perfectly laid on a surface; and I learned so much with all the milling machine work I did.
But it is also the project that caused me the most grief and certainly looks the worst.
I based my thesis on technology in jewellery, and for example as much as I believe there is a great future in making medical pieces for elderly looking more like an ornamental piece than just a surveillance piece, Oyster card information incorporated into a watch or bracelet, there should also be jewels for the sake of jewels. To adorn for no other reason than to adorn.
Our forth project was based on whatever topic we chose to create a cover for a torch of our own preference.
I based my studies on Pop Art and did two covers, one with coloured titanium that was riveted in layers and this one in gilding metal that sandwiches a double layer of rubber. The pressure that the plates put on to the rubber means that the torch slides in to it's position and is held there by the rubber expanding.
This project had also come home with us over the summer holiday's and I had a second cousin who is a carpenter and wood worker, so I asked him to form the birch wood for me.
When I got back to the UK and started the second year we were informed that this project would be skipped because of the prior two; but as I had a the wood already I decided to complete it anyway.
The locket part; which I made into a small drawer was placed in between the two outside sheets and easily pulls out to hold a treasure or secret.

Edwardian style diamond and sapphire flower ring. 1.30cts old brilliant cut diamond central stone with half-moon sapphires, brilliant cut diamonds and millgrained platinum setting. I photographed this for our brochure and website.
We recreated this ring from an old design... so although it looks old... it is in fact all new save for the old cut diamond in the centre.
Old cuts diamonds like this one are the precursors to the modern brilliant cuts we are all familiar with. They have less facets than the modern cut and (due to age) tend to look a little off-white!

This was a fun project that I completed on the side. I made up three different necklaces with silver cylinders and magnets all containing several strands of sellar tape. In between the tape that had been folded over on itself I had put in some 'faux diamonds'* (my university budget didn't allow me to use real ones though the project asked for it)

2ct brilliant diamond with 50 diamond pave set bezel. I photographed this on black mainly for Rumour's bespoke jewellery portfolio and website, but I also love the strong contrast and reflections provided by this background which many of my jewellery photos use.
