Self-medicating today. Need the coffee to combat jetlag and not quite enough sleep the last few days (weeks, months...). And having a beer (or two) to soften the blow of my good friend's passing. We had a really wonderful too-brief time in DC to celebrate sy's sis and her newly minted hubby. Now we are part of the anti-diaspora of folks descending on Brooklyn. Travelling thru the eastern seaboard by train is every bit as romantic and sweet as I'd hoped it would be. The train rolls in a lulling rhythm (bad for the employee's knees, but good for business class traveller--in typical classist dichotomy). The verdant green makes me miss the original home of the Moleywole, Massachusetts. And I'm overwhelmed by the combination of beauty and intense sadness and futility of it all. All those near and dear to me, I want to wrap up and keep safe under my wing. But alas i have no wings and cannot keep anyone safe, least of all myself.
So tired I could weep, but utterly unable to sleep.
I dozed off in the car for about 15 minutes this afternoon and BOY did that screw me over.
I was awake until almost 3 am and had to get up at 5.30.
beating my jetlag (and hangover) at the blue lagoon before heading to my hotel in reykjavik.

Eclettici come non mai, i Fat Freddy’s Drop e il loro miscuglio di dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm ‘n’ blues e techno arrivano in Italia per un’unica data martedì 30 ottobre 2018 all’Alcatraz di Milano.
Nei loro ultimi quattro lavori, i sette neozelandesi si sono fatti strada dall’incubatrice del reggae attraverso una coloratissima psichedelia soul, svoltando bruscamente su una superstrada desolata di Detroit nel cuore della notte. Il loro sound ha la sua migliore espressione durante i live, con un interessante mix di virtuosismi jazz e suoni che rompono ogni schema.
Queste influenze sono frutto del gusto personale e delle esperienze on the road dei singoli membri della band, come l’esibizione al Movement Festival di Detroit nel 2006, che ha costituito un vero spartiacque nella carriera dell’ensemble. L’ultimo lavoro dei Fat Freddy’s Drop, Bays (2015), è stato registrato nella natia Nuova Zelanda, mentre i precedenti album hanno preso forma durante i numerosi tour e i loro pezzi sono stati perfezionati durante le esibizioni sui palchi di Womad UK, Sonar, Bestival, Lowlands, DEMF, Pukkelpop, Glastonbury, The Big Chill e Roskilde.
Nati nel 1999, i Fat Freddy’s Drop si stanno avvicinando a grandi passi all’importante traguardo di 1000 show insieme, con oltre 500 apparizioni in Europa, quasi 30 tour in Australia e più di 300 concerti nel loro paese, con importanti picchi come due sold out consecutivi alla O2 Academy Brixton per un totale di 10,000 spettatori. La band ha ormai consolidato un’affezionata fanbase in Europa e Regno Unito grazie alle esibizioni di alto profilo accompagnate da album a cottura lenta che rivelano nuovi dettagli ad ogni ascolto, preparando il fan al prossimo live. Si tratta di un gioco lungo, un percorso costituito da un’attenta evoluzione stilistica, oltre a produzioni di valore sempre crescente e una reputazione live che precede il materiale in studio.
