Jess is actually a veterinary tech and a dolphin trainer. At least she was back in Corpus Christi. Finding work in Philly has been difficult, she says, because places like the Camden Aquarium require certification, which she doesn't have.
Last week an acquaintance who'd asked for a place to stay ended up robbing her. She starts a new job next week (as a historical tour guide), but until then, panhandles for food money.
Welcome to hard luck Philly.
[UPDATE Mar 5, 2012: The job didn't come thru. She's still looking. But for now, still panhandling.]
[UPDATE Sep 16, 2012: A commenter tells me Jess has found full-time work as a veterinary tech.]

Canon Speedlite 177A on manual mode bounced into umbrella camera right. SB 24 zoomed to 85mm and aimed at face camera left. 1/100s, f6.3, flash white balance, 100 ISO. Taken with a Canon Rebel XT and 18-55mm kit lens. Flashes triggered with 4ch eBay remotes.
Jess in vivid color.
Alien Bee 1600 in large softbox on camera left, Alien Bee 800 with reflector on camera right, Alien Bee 800 in a beauty dish above for a hair light. I don't recall what lights were used on the background but they weren't from Paul C. Buff. They were obviously gellin'.
Here I am in my tux before I went out for a night of dancing with my girlfriend at the time, Jess. The picture was taken in the living room of my parent's house. The dance was at the Sunnybrook Ballroom.
Both Sylvia and I spotted Jess’ standout hair from the other side of the street and after a brief introduction on our intent, we were all walking down a side street looking for a suitable background.
The sun was out and with no shade in sight we made good use of the scrim to provide just the right amount of shade. Sylvia was brilliant standing on the tips of her toes and stretching right out holding the scrim in place over Jess’ head, doing her best not get in the frame.
Jess was an absolute natural in front of the camera, taking directions with ease and looking fabulous and relaxed no matter what angle I shot her from. To say that I was captivated by her natural beauty and poise is an understatement.
Believe it or not Jess had just stepped off a plane from Cape Town, South Africa only a few hours earlier to visit and work with her brother. She had the most intriguing accent and at the end of the shoot we chatted about how we thought she should look into doing some modelling work.
This shot is my favourite from the dozen or so I shot and think that it really shows her style. On a technical note, I have played around a little with the overall softness of this image, pulling down the details and moving away from the tack sharp portraits that I normally post. Personally, I think it suits Jess’ look. I have posted the sharper, less processed version for you to compare. Please feel free to let me know your thoughts… positive or negative… I can handle it!
Thanks Jess for being part of the project and I hope you enjoy your say in OZ.

This is the wonderful Jess who I had the pleasure of photographing at a studio lighting workshop I attended last weekend.
I also taught myself frequency separation in Photoshop to color match the skin tones. A fantastic technique.

Photoshop seems to remove the Exif details:
Fujifilm X-T2
56mm f1.2 (such a beautiful lens)
ISO 200, f4, 1/250
Godox AD400 and XPro trigger
This is Jess the Border Collie and she is one of Chelsea's mates.
Jess came to our house for a play date this week.
Whilst the humans had coffee and cake, the pooches had fun playing, playing and more playing. They can pack so much into a couple of ours.
Chelsea and Jess enjoy each others company and get very excited to see each other.
