All the way over in California my dear friend Jess has produced this painting of me, showing a heady night under the lights of Soho when she visited in the Summer. My first portrait and I am speechless (at last!).

Jess Kinzie has been the Formula Hybrid Program Coordinator at Thayer since 2019 and, in 2020, became an advisor to underrepresented student groups.

“I was a high school English teacher for about 8 years in North Carolina. Then, in 2012, my husband and I decided to move back north to Vermont where I’m originally from. I worked for a year at a school where my morals were challenged to the point where I didn’t think I was going to go on teaching anymore. And so, I abruptly quit my job and had a massive reckoning with what I was doing and why.

At this point, I can look back and say that it was a phoenix moment for me because all I ever knew was teaching. It was all I thought I could do. And my god I just quit. I just walked out.

After a few years working at the hospital, I got a job as the Program Coordinator for Formula Hybrid at Thayer. I had no idea about engineering. I am an English major. I read poetry. I write stories. And here I am at an engineering school. But here, I feel like I finally came into who I want to be, and it’s emotional because I wasn’t expecting it. I realized that I could shed this persona I thought I had to be because I was surrounded by people who were so kind, uplifting, confident, and who wanted to see me succeed. It was one of the first times that I was truly surrounded by people who just wanted me to succeed, and this is huge because...I’m not young. It took me a long time to find that.

Later, I jumped on the opportunity to be a program advisor for underrepresented student groups because one of the pieces that has been missing since I left the classroom was working with students. I adore working with students. I love learning from them. I love encouraging them, I love trying to problem solve with them. And I felt I was finally in the position where I could finally give back. I can now truly help others in a way that was unavailable to me before I came to Thayer.” - Jess Kinzie

“And what do you find that you need to thrive today?”

“I think a lot of it comes down to trust, people trusting me to do well and people having confidence in me, seeing something in me that I can’t see myself. Trust helps me do my best work and be happy and keep pushing my boundaries.” - Jess Kinzie
