my first time visiting here...April 2015

Meet Pam, a proud mom, grandma, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to many people in Joplin. Born and raised here, living in the same neighborhood throughout her life, Pam is a very proud member of her community.

On May 22nd, Pam was doing what she would normally be doing on any warm spring evening - sitting on the porch with her daughter and Larry, her husband, talking with her family that lived nearby. When the dark clouds began to roll in, they decided that it was time for everyone to go inside to take shelter. They received a call from Pam’s daughter-in-law who lived on the west side of town who told them her house was completely gone. Fortunately, she and her children had taken cover under the stairwell and were all alright. At that point, the call was disconnected as the tornado reached Pam’s neighborhood. She and her family took cover in one of the bedroom closets as the windows began to shatter and her roof began to twist away. At one point, Pam peeked out the door during the storm, and all she could see was black. “Never in my life had I seen a night that was as dark as that was,” she said.

Pam considers herself very lucky that everyone in her large family made it through the storm safely. However, she did have some heartache after the storm. “I lost a lot of friends in the tornado. Living here all your life, you know everybody,” she said, “but we have really been so blessed.” Pam’s old home surprisingly stayed together, but there was a lot of damage. To try to secure her home from further damage from the elements, she hired someone to put on a new roof. Unfortunately, the roof was not adequately repaired, leaving several broken rafters and causing further damage to her home.

Despite the problems Pam has faced, she is incredibly positive. She says that the volunteers that have come to help in Joplin are “absolutely fantastic and phenomenal.” She also says that her husband Larry used to be able to fix up everything in their home, but his health condition doesn't allow him to do that anymore. Pam is very excited to get things back to normal and to again be able to watch her beloved grandchildren in a home that is completely safe for them to visit.

Dan is a kind, soft-spoken man who takes time with his words as he describes what the months have been like since the storm. A lifelong Joplin resident and war veteran, he followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, becoming a third-generation electrician. On May 22, 2011, Dan had gone to visit his brother and assist him with a home repair. Little did he know, when he returned to his house on Kentucky Avenue, he would no longer have a home. Still, his selflessness showed, as he did not first look to his own home to salvage possessions, but rather began to search for his neighbors to check on their well-being.

The storm destroyed the two-story home he had owned and lovingly restored since 1988. The roof was completely torn apart and the interior framing severely damaged. In addition, all of his appliances and furnishings were completely ruined after rain continued to pour in for two days. He counts himself lucky that he was unharmed and able to salvage some clothing, kitchenware and a few photos. He smiles when he recounts his experience of meeting and shaking hands with President Barack Obama the week after the tornado as he surveyed the damage during his visit to Joplin.

Forced to make a choice between prescription costs and home insurance, Dan had no coverage to help him rebuild in the aftermath of the storm. He received assistance from FEMA to help with repairs and fund his temporary housing but due to the extent of the damage in his home, the grant will soon run out.

Unwilling to be deterred, Dan has been able to fix his roof thanks to the help of volunteers, but much still needs to be done. With your help, we will be able to return him to the safe, comfortable home that he deserves.

When asked why he is returning to his neighborhood when many of his friends are not, he has a simple response. “I have only had one zip code my whole life. This is home, and the only place I want to be.”

Just finished documenting Joplin. Very sad, and utterly inconceivable. This is a quick iPhone panorama.

Lived in Joplin: She has lived in Joplin her whole life.

Occupation: She currently cleans people’s houses and does other jobs around the community.

Relatives: She has 4 children- ages 10,11, 12 and 21. Her parents live in nearby Duquesne, MO.

Project Type: A lot of finishing work to be done.

Currently Living: She and her 10 and 11 year old children lived in the FEMA trailers for a long time after the tornado, but they now live with her parents in Duquesne.

Setbacks in Rebuilding: The rebuilding process has been fraught with setbacks for Teresea. Her house has been robbed several time. She has been the victim of several bad contractors, and has had a couple contractors quit. This has left the house with a lot of finishing work needing done, yet uninhabitable.

Tornado Experience: Teresea was down the street from her house, babysitting her neighbor’s 2 kids, blocks from the high school. Her own children were on their way back from their grandparent’s house. As it was beginning to hail, she went outside. The neighbors were setting up a barbeque grill, and she leaned down to pick up a piece of hail, her ears popped. She knew this would be bad, and went quickly back into the house. The younger girl was terrified, and began pulling a mattress into the bathroom. Teresea helped her cover herself with the mattress in the tub and then covered herself and the other girl with a mattress on top of the first mattress. Tersea’s mattress was ripped away by the winds, but the three of them rode out the storm in the bathroom. Teresea’s mother and children had stopped in Webb City, and rode the storm out there.

Goals/ Hopes for the Future: Tersea looks forward to living peacefully again. She wants to get home and live the way we want to live and do what she and her children want to do.

Meet Rebecca. Rebecca is a gentle, soft spoken woman who experienced firsthand the devastating effects of the Joplin tornado. Rebecca has lived in Joplin her entire life, attending school at Joplin High School and finally settling into her own home with her three daughters just down the road from where she went to class. On May 22nd, 2011, Rebecca was attending a weekly Sunday dinner at her neighbor’s home. Rebecca and her neighbor left the dinner to go to the grocery store when sirens started going off and store employees moved customers into the freezer in back.

Upon arriving back at her house, Rebecca noticed the overwhelming damage the tornado had caused in her neighborhood. Rebecca found her fiance, Darren, back at her neighbor’s house, where the group had hid in the garage during the storm. Darren had rushed outside to check on the other neighbors when he stepped into a hole where a tree once stood, breaking his leg. Darren and Rebecca rushed to Freeman Hospital and waited to be seen. Meanwhile, Rebecca still didn't know if her daughters were okay. It wasn't until 10:30 that night that Rebecca finally heard from her daughters, and fortunately all of them were safe.

The May 22nd tornado has left both physical and emotional scars for Rebecca and her family. Rebecca’s house suffered severe roof damage, in addition to the windows being blown out, 2x4’s sticking through the walls, and terrible water damage that came from the rainy days following the storm. Rebecca and her family stayed with friends in a hotel room for three months, and when they were finally able to move back into their old home, they lived without running water and electricity for an additional two months. Rebecca says that they tried to make some repairs themselves, but due to Darren’s injury on top financial difficulties, these repairs proved difficult.

When Rebecca found out that Rebuild Joplin was here to help, she said that the support is “such a big burden off of our shoulders. I can’t wait to get back to normal and not stress every day.”

When thinking about the volunteers in Joplin, Rebecca is touched by their character, “The volunteers have been so wonderful. You can’t really get down in your spirits. Just when you think you've had enough, somebody will come and lift you back up.”

Janis Joplin drawing I made using graphite pencil

Lived in Joplin: She has lived in Joplin since she was 14, and it feels like she is a lifelong resident.

Occupation: She’s retired, but worked in shirt and blouse factories, and had worked at an electronics store for 15 years before retiring.

Relatives: She has three children in Rolla, MO and Yukon, OK.

Project Type: Minor Repairs

Currently Living: Her original home was completely destroyed by the tornado. She bought her current home with the insurance money, and since it is an older home it requires some repairs.

Setbacks in Rebuilding: After the tornado, she lived with one of her children in Oklahoma, but hated it there. It never felt like home. So a year after the tornado she moved back to the Joplin area.

Tornado Experience: Velma had been monitoring the weather on the television and through weather radio all day. There had been reports of bad storms, and reports that the tornado was going to bypass and miss her. Satisfied she was safe; Velma began getting ready for bed. Her phone rang, and her nephew told her the tornado was heading for her, she needed to take cover. She argued with him, that she had been tracking the weather and the tornado was over in Webb City. Her nephew told her one last time to take cover and hung up. She looked out the front door and the tornado looked like it was across the street. She found her two small dogs, grabbed them and a pillow, knelt on the floor and prayed. She doesn’t remember much of what happened, as the tornado tore her house apart. When the tornado had passed, her neighbor across the street came over and helped her escape the ruble. He had lost his house also, but insisted that she come with him to be safe. The two of them, and the dogs, went over to his house and eventually to his step-mothers house, where they spent the first night. Velma’s daughter came up to check on her mom, but was unable to find or reach her. It was only later on Monday that the two were able to connect.

Goals/ Hopes for the Future: Velma hopes that she never has to live through something like that again. She hopes that her new house will feel like home and enjoy the repairs.

I have always been a fan of the late Janis Joplin - I woke up to her singing "Get It While You Can" on my alarm-radio. She has been on my mind all morning. So, I thought I'd pay tribute to her in my own way - on flickr.

Meet Rhonda, a single mother, grandma, and long-time Joplin resident. While she used to consider 22 as her “lucky number”, May 22nd was not a lucky day for Rhonda. On that Sunday, Rhonda was watching her young grandsons play outside in the yard. Suddenly, her son yelled across the lawn that he saw a nearby church get hit by a tornado. Rhonda knew she had to get everyone inside immediately: “My sons ran in and the whole place got totally dark. We were under the table, every single one of us. All of the glass from the windows went in, our belongings started sucking out and everything in the house was just a mess… We were just petrified.”

Fortunately, no one in Rhonda’s immediate family was seriously injured, despite a cut her youngest grandson suffered. However, events that occurred in the months after the storm have been more than challenging. Rhonda’s sister spent her last days living in a FEMA trailer, where she eventually passed away. With no insurance and few resources, Rhonda has struggled to fix the damage to her own home, which remains difficult as a single mother and grandparent. Despite her hopeful spirit, Rhonda says there are constant reminders of the tornado everywhere she turns.

Rhonda remains hopeful for the future. When Rhonda found out that Rebuild Joplin was able to help her, she expressed her gratitude knowing that people are traveling far and wide to lend the Joplin community a helping hand: “I am so glad Rebuild Joplin is here to help us. We have no insurance and it has been impossible to repair everything myself. I have tried to keep it up, and it’s just difficult. I bought a new lawn mower and then it was stolen days later. I have been just devastated over and over.”

Rhonda is anxious and excited to see her home rebuilt to the way it was before the storm; a home that has been a part of her family for three generations, and hopefully more to come.

Cuanto canto, no pienso.

Solo cierro los ojos y siento, me siento bien. Es realmente como una fiebre. Es como cien orgasmos con alguien que amas. Vive por esa hora en el escenario. Esta llena de sensaciones.. Es una Fiebre, carino... Janis Joplin

Brown front-facing chips. Her little wing tips look a bit uneven because some was braided by accident. :P

Joplin is my 1970's project, with a bit of flair. Her dress was hand-made with glittery, textured paisley, and fully lined in deep purple. Her wild waves are so soft and fun to play with! I didn't want to go the route of straight black hair (a la Cher), so I went with light blue to complement her milk chocolate skin tone. *Her original hair style can be replaced.

Name: Shirley and Michael

Lived in Joplin: 6 years

Occupation: Shirley is a cook. Her husband, Michael, is a contractor.

Relatives: She has a daughter and 2 sons in the area. Her one son, daughter in-law and grandson lived with her during the tornado.

Rebuilding Needing Done: Her kitchen needs completely redone, because of a leak in the roof. A small portion of her roof needs repaired, and some of her siding was blown off her house.

Currently Living: Shirley and her husband are currently living in the house, which needs repairs.

Setbacks in Rebuilding: They were fortunate enough to not have run into any setbacks in rebuilding and recovering after the tornado. Hesitant to ask for any help, a former Rebuild Joplin client strongly recommended she apply. Now that she has been approved, she truly appreciates Rebuild Joplin’s help.

Tornado Experience: Shirley, her husband, son, daughter-in-law, and grandson were home watching the weather. They watched until the television station went dark, and then raced towards the bathroom. As they looked outside, the tornado looked as though it was headed straight towards them. After rescuing her two dogs from under the bed, Shirley and her family piled into the bathtub. Shirley and her husband held the mattress, as the others huddled in the tub. The tornado turned before reaching their house directly, hitting an area about three blocks away. After the tornado, Shirley and her husband, a contractor, went outside and offered to help people board up their homes. Shirley had never experienced a tornado before, and hopes to never experience one again. Shirley says, “I really appreciate {the volunteers} being there”.

Goals/ Hopes for the Future: As a professional cook, Shirley used to cook Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for her family. Since the tornado, she has been unable to do that, and looks forward to being able to cook for family holidays again.

Meet Christy

Lived in Joplin: Christy has lived in Joplin her entire life

Setbacks in Rebuilding: Six years before the tornado, Christy spent a lot of money paying a recommended contractor to fix her flat roof. Being pregnant with her daughter, she never got on the ladder and checked to see how the work was looking. The poor quality of work became apparent only after the tornado, when it began to leak. The humidity and particles caused health problems for her young daughter.

Tornado Experience: Christy and most of her family were at Walt Disney World on vacation when the tornado struck. They were scheduled to come home on Monday, and the tornado struck Sunday night. The only family member left in Joplin was her grandmother. The family called her the night of the tornado. As Christy finished speaking with her grandmother, the tornado sirens wailed in the background. Her grandmother hung up the phone, and headed into the closet, the safest place in her house during a tornado.

Christy and her family returned to Joplin a day after the tornado. They found the chaos that comes with natural disasters, but wanted to check on their grandmother. Although, they were told they couldn’t go near her grandmother’s house, Christy and her family were determined to check on her. A police officer friend gave Christy a ride to her grandmother’s house. It was completely destroyed, and they found people stealing her grandmother’s jewelry from the rubble. Her grandmother was one of the 161 people killed by the tornado. Christy and her family mourned the loss of her grandmother, but kept busy running Stogey’s.

Goals/ Hopes for the Future: Christy simply wants to raise her daughter the best she can. She’d like to pay it forward, and is thinking of joining the Peace Corps when her daughter gets a little older.

Meet Beverly.

Lived in Joplin: She lived in Joplin for 5 years, before renting her house out and moving to Albuquerque, NM to be closer to her mother and sister. After the tornado, she decided she wanted to return to Joplin and fix her house.

Occupation: Beverly works in retail selling jewelry.

Relatives: She has a daughter and a son, and a total of 4 grandchildren.

Rebuilding Needing Done: She had paid for much of the work to be done already. She needs Rebuild Joplin’s help fixing some of the electrical, plumbing, and securing the overall structural integrity of the house.

Currently Living: She currently lives in her house in Joplin.

Setbacks in Rebuilding: Beverly spent all of her insurance money, plus all of her savings trying to repair the house after the storm. She had not been aware that programs like Rebuild Joplin existed, and wishes she had heard about them earlier. She appreciates all of the help and support of the community and volunteers.

Tornado Experience: Beverly was renting out her home in Joplin to a nice young couple, when the tornado hit. Fortunately, they were not at home. The bedrooms, located in the back of the house, had their windows blown out, and would have injured anyone in the room. After the storm, the house was so badly damaged, they were not able to return. Beverly came back from New Mexico to make the repairs.

Goals/ Hopes for the Future: Beverly had become part of the community in Albuquerque, and looks forward to doing the same here in Joplin. She wants to start volunteering in the community, and join the art community.

Meet Thomas, an American Red Cross worker and amateur radio enthusiast. Thomas has lived in the Midwest his entire life, finally settling in Joplin in 2003. Thomas holds a unique perspective on the tornado, seeing as both his home was damaged and he was called to provide disaster relief services through the Red Cross within hours of the storm hitting. He certainly has seen a lot of disasters in his time, but as he puts it the Joplin tornado was “definitely the worst I have ever seen”.

On May 22nd, Thomas spent much of his afternoon weather spotting prior to the tornado’s arrival. When the storm started to turn severe and radio communication mentioned that the tornado was heading toward his neighborhood, he knew that his life was about to take a drastic turn. Within hours of the disaster, Thomas was called into the Red Cross to aid in the communications side of search and rescue operations. From the Sunday the tornado hit until the following Tuesday, he remembers phone services were so backed up that people couldn’t even get their call through to request assistance. He continued to work selflessly throughout the emergency relief process, contributing much of his time to help others when parts of his own home had been ripped apart by the storm.

Unfortunately, devastation continued to take a drastic toll on Thomas’ life. Shortly after the storm, his wife was diagnosed with breast, bone, and lung cancer and relocated to Mississippi to be with her family during treatment. Thomas has not been able to find steady work due to a disability after receiving a hip replacement. Crippled by the growing medical bills from his wife’s cancer treatments, it has been difficult to save enough money to repair the damage the storm left. After he met Rebuild Joplin he remembers, “just feeling relieved knowing that I was able to access a resource. It really takes off a lot of stress”.

Thomas is impressed by the motivation and selflessness that Joplin volunteers have demonstrated over the past year: “I really think that the number of people that came in and are still coming in wanting to help…it’s remarkable”.
