Between Joplin and Neosho, the scenery gets pretty nice again. Our late AM SBD rolls well on a perfectly clear day in SW Missouri.
On Sunday night a Tornado ripped through the town of Joplin, not far from where I live. Here in Overland Park, as the massive storm passed overhead, sirens sounded and shook our home. I know Joplin and made pictures there on one of my route 66 trips. This is one of them. If I wasn't leaving for NYC tomorrow morning I would drive down there with my camera..
You will notice the love for the arts as you drive through downtown Joplin, MO. On many of the buildings, there are these beautiful murals, such as this Pride Love one. What is great about them is they are kind of hidden. You will never notice if you are staring at your feet while walking down the street. So look up and enjoy.

There's not much for this Kansas City to Shreveport manifest to stop for in Joplin these days, but I imagine this grassy field was once filled with tracks. Just out of the frame to the left is the old Joplin Union Station, now nothing more than a decaying concrete shell.
This past Saturday I had the chance to visit Joplin, MO with my Son. He is a police officer and was sent here in the early days following the devastating tornado in May of 2011. Destruction in the city covered an area roughly 1 mile wide x 7 miles long. I believe there were over 160 people that lost their lives from the tornado. We went to see the city at what is now 14 months post-disaster. Many areas have been re-built and you would never know anything happened. Other areas are still very much affected and you can see the remnants of what used to be. This lone house is mostly standing but was severely damaged and stands just as it did when the tornado came through. The tree was stripped of the foliage and looks completely dead with the exception of the one branch full of leaves on the lower left. It is a haunting scene but is a reminder of just how small we all are compared to the forces of nature.
I'm glad I had the chance to go see this and to record this scene in my sketchbook.
I've had the opportunity to visit Joplin the past 3 years, stopping to photograph a few historic places in town. It's a nice town and good people.
An EF5 strength tornado swept through Joplin on May 22nd, killing at least 139 persons and devastating the town. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
I love her little guitar!
I've been thinking about painting her nails gold. Your thoughts? :P
