Former Safeway located at 923 West 4th St. in Joplin,MO. The building is currently occupied by a manufacturing facility operating under the name SMC Electrical Supply.
Note the facade of the former Safeway is completely unrecognizable, however the back of the building still has its gabled roof line.
Its also worth noting this Safeway store opened for business in 1960.
For my documentary series, I chose murals in Joplin. There were a lot of really cool murals to look at and honestly while we were walking the streets of Joplin I would look at each of the buildings for interesting unique pictures and messages. I enjoyed the "Joplin Hearts" but I could only find two of them. I included an extra photo to portray a variety of wall art.
A ghost sign that simply says "Buggies", on the side of a building in Joplin, Missouri. This one has got to be old.

Janis Lyn Joplin (19 January 1943 – 4 October 1970) was an American singer, songwriter, and music arranger, from Port Arthur, Texas. She rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later a solo career. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin #46 on their list of the 50 Greatest Artists of All Time.[1] Her career continued until her death in Los Angeles, California of a Heroin overdose, at the age of 27.
**The last verse of Don McLean's 1971 folk-rock song "American Pie" is believed to be referring to Joplin, when it says: "I met a girl who sang the blues, and I asked her for some happy news. She just smiled and turned away...
Joplin is part of a litter of 4 kittens that were rescued after a huge storm. They are 2-3 weeks old and the first bottle babies I have done in a long time! I am quickly remembering WHY I avoid bottle babies! They are sweet but needy little demons who need fed every 2-3 hours. I named them all after '60s singers. All of my babies have been adopted to great homes so now I have this last group. Once they are ready I will be taking a break from kittens... because it can burn you out fast!
