Entre los años finales del XIX y primeros del XX, se produjo en Madrid un boom por la afición al juego de la pelota vasca y a las apuestas con él vinculadas. Se construyeron en la ciudad, en muy poco tiempo hasta cuatro grandes frontones.
El mayor fue éste, el Beti-Jai, con capacidad para más de cuatro mil espectadores, en un estilo ecléctico, el de la época en la capital, que sumaba influjos de la arquitectura tradicional en ladrillo, con elementos decorativos hispanomusulmanes, pero también aportaciones de la arquitectura del hierro. Su éxito fue efímero, apenas cuatro años, tras los cuales y hasta hace poco tiempo, su existencia fue languideciendo, siendo albergue tanto de personas, en los tiempos inmediatos al final de la guerra civil, como de los negocios más diversos y, finalmente, del abandono y la especulación. Esta última motivada porque constituye un espacio muy goloso para la construcción en pleno centro de Madrid. Finalmente, la resistencia de los particulares, constituida en asociación de defensa del Beti-Jai, ha conseguido que sea restaurado, a la espera de darle un destino adecuado.
Many years ago I was in Nepal.
Most Nepali are either Hindus or Buddhists....though other religions are also represented.
One day I felt suddenly impelled to go into a Buddhist monastery for a month, and while there, to cut off my hair.
I came out of the monastery, my hair grew back.......and I carry Nepal inside me.
These are little paper replicas of Buddhist prayer flags that hang from the valance of a window.
And now impel me to send hope and energy to the Nepalese people and their land.
Many international relief efforts are underway that need funding.
I am not soliciting, but for those who are able and interested, here is a partial list. There are others....including Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross.

Beti Jai es un testigo vivo del auge del juego de pelota vasca a finales del siglo XIX, cuando este deporte estaba de moda en Madrid. Los aficionados acudían a los partidos, los pelotaris gozaban de fama y dinero y los periodistas escribían las crónicas. En este contexto social se inauguró en 1.894 un nuevo frontón en la capital, bautizado en euskera Beti Jai, (Siempre Fiesta). Cerrado en 1.919 y utilizado para otras actividades entró en abandono y ruina absoluta.Recuperado y reformado desde 2.015, ha reabierto como espacio de visita.
Beti Jai is a living withness to the rise of the basque pelota game at the end of the 19th century, when the the sport was fashionable in Madrid. In this social context, a new pelota court was inaugurated in the capital in 1.894, christened Beti Jai in Basque language (Always a party). Closed in 1919 and used for other activities, it was abandoned and fell into absolute ruin. Recovered and reformed since 2.015 it has reopened as a visitor space.
Jais era una palabra que se oía y leía mucho después de mediado los años 70 y, también, en la década de los 80. Luego cayó en desuso.
Lo recogía y definía Umbral, don Francisco, en su Diccionario para Pobres: La jai es tácitamente la mujer joven y atractiva. Es prenda que se ofrece en primavera a la vista del personal y en esas fechas luce pierna lírica y helado de fresa en la mano.
Umbral, obviamente, era un machista, para qué nos vamos a engañar. Pero en lo del helado acertó de pleno, porque estas dos jóvenes, en su mano, portan helados de fresa. Y con bola doble.

Ce jour là, il n’y avait que deux kitesurfeurs sur l’Étang de Berre. Le vent n’était pas très fort, mais comme il passe sur l’étang avant d’arriver sur la plage du Jaï, il faisait vraiment froid en ce début janvier. Ça caillait !
