Three hours and more than 250 km into our train ride we passed this isolated village at the foot of the mountains.

6" thick slab on grade with a 6" thick slab raised 2" on spring isolators. The red iron around the perimeter are snubbers, which steady the slab in case of an earthquake and keep it from moving laterally. The insulation is stuffed under the slab so screws and other detritus don't sneak under the slab during construction and short circuit the isolation. It will be removed right before they close up the walls. The circles on the face of the slab are the heads of the spring isolators; the check marks are the number of rotations they've been spun to raise the slab and make it level.

The Trona Pinnacles is one of the most unusual geological features in the California Desert National Conservation Area. The unusual landscape consists of more than 500 tufa spires (porous rock formed as a deposit from springs of streams), some as high as 140 feet (43 m), rising from the bed of the Searles Lake (dry) basin. The pinnacles vary in size and shape from short and squat to tall and thin, and are composed primarily of calcium carbonate (tufa). They now sit isolated and slowly crumbling away near the south end of the valley, surrounded by many square miles of flat, dried mud and with stark mountain ranges at either side.

Set: Italy - Matera, Basilicata - UNESCO World Heritage Site and location of the film "The Passion".

It really surprised me, given just how isolated the city/town is and how inaccessible it was from the rest of the world, even as recently as the 1970s and 80s, just how many tourists there were and how quickly the locals seemed to have adapted to this latest invasion, some of them having set up stalls selling "objets d'art" from their front doorstep or passively watching us pass by with our cameras and guide books. I would love to know what this man had seen in his life time, but he would only have spoken to dialect and there was something about his pose that said he didn't want to be disturbed.

Most of the town/city is now located above the former cave dwellings and churches (or sassi), many of which are condemned and/or being restored, but there are still some that are inhabited. It was rather eerie to wander through the maze of steep pathways past empty houses, which look like normal houses from the outside, but are dug deep into the rock itself, and then round a corner to find someone sitting on a plastic chair on their doorstep or collecting the laundry that had been hung out to dry.

Apologies for the lack of visits and comments, but I'm still on holiday/travelling - I really appreciate your visit though!

These isolated falls some 7 miles north of Sedbergh are well worth the treck up the valley of the River Rawthey. I got absolutely soaked walking the four or five miles up the valley from Rawthey Bridge. It actually stopped raining whilst I took these shots. It rained all the way back down the valley!

The falls are about 15 metres in height as the river plunges into a rocky bowl on its descent from Baugh Fell.

This was shot at 10 am on a bright, yet overcast day. I set my camera to "spot metering shadow" which exposed for the flower and then made the dark areas darker. I like the result.

Gympie is in flood again. First the Kid Bridge was cut as per the photo. Then the Normandy Bridge over the Mary was closed this morning and the Bruce Highway has been cut. Might not get to work tomorrow morning.

One guy found the perfect spot on a paved portion of hill to watch the race alone. He has to drink his 2-liter of Coke all by himself.

That is not the appropriate way to hydrate.
