Ant Damsel Bug;
'damsel' is such a strange name for a ferocious predatory stabber of a thing but apparently damsel bugs are so called because of their way of raising their front legs up as if (use your imagination) lifting the hem of long skirts from the floor for a spin around the dance-floor or a quick sprint for the bus, or whatever.
Godshill Model Village, Isle of Wight.
Set in the grounds of the old vicarage.
Since 1952, Godshill has been the home of a model village portraying itself and Shanklin's old village at a scale of 1:10. It is so detailed and on such a large scale that it contains a scale model of the model village. Within that second model there is a third, even smaller model of the village. The site is also an RHS Partner Garden showcasing around 2,000 conifers and shrubs. Many are coarse bonsai-treated trees, to retain scale with the models.
Day trip to IOW with Chris. Visited Osborne House, Needles Battery, Appuldurcombe House and Carisbrooke Castle
but not sure which one, but looks like abutilon perhaps from the pronotum 'eyes' and habitat: found several in a hot sandy arable field been left to revert with minimal intervention, has developed a fantastically rich flora with ground lichen communities and much patchy bare ground; really fantastic for inverts (and birds - good winter woodlark spot).
Osbourne House which was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's summer retreat to escape from the stresses of Royal life. The setting of the house which they bought in 1845 appealed to Albert as it reminded him of the Bay of Naples in Italy. However the existing house was too small for their needs so they pulled it down and rebuilt it. Prince Albert designed the new house himself in collaboration with builder Thomas Cubitt and it was rebuilt in the style of the Italian Renaissance complete with two pseudo campanile towers between 1845 and 1851 (source - Wikipedia)
Unusual fact: During World War 2, Hitler planned to use Osbourne House as a home for himself if the invasion of Britain was successful, so he ordered his Luftwaffe to make sure they didn't bomb anywhere near it.
