Facial casts of Nias islanders, J.P. Kleiweg de Zwaan, 1910
In the early 20th century, the Dutch anthropologist J.P. Kleiweg de Zwaan studied the physical features of human races. On Nias Island in the former Dutch East Indies, he recorded the appearance of a group of living men by making plaster moulds of their faces. The moulds were brought to the Netherlands, where lifelike casts were made of them. For anthropologists, these numbered casts embodied the ethnic diversity of Nias islanders.

This islands need no introduction nor could I define because of the kindness the islanders have shown towards me and helped me so much in bringing out one of the most successful projects ever implemented by UNDP Maldives.
With the help of Force of Nature Aid foundation, a donor agency from Malaysia - UNDP piloted a project on AUOTPOT SYSTEM, which was very successful in the island and as result of the project, the local community started to believe in themselves and have already gathered enough momentum to make it a much bigger success.
This picture was taken during the final evaluation of the project by the donor agency and the two ladies you see (one sitting and the other one taking the picture) are the senior grant officers from the agency. They jelled very well with the community and had a very successful trip both work wise and enjoyment wise.

Charles Avery - The Islanders
Fascinating artworks about a fictional island - contains a lot of interesting philosophy.
The light was subdued and the photographs are bad. But I post a few new ones because I got some questions about the artist and the book.

The Islanders: An Introduction
28 February – 7 June 2009
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
For the past four years, Charles Avery has been working on an epic project which seeks to define an imaginary island off the Scottish coast. Through drawings, models and texts Avery describes the topology, cosmology and inhabitants of this fictional territory, creating a challenging space for philosophical inquiry. With around twenty drawings and prints, ten sculptures and twenty works on paper with mixed techniques, the exhibition ‘The Islanders: An Introduction’ brings together the project so far.
