The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is considered as one of the most beautiful mosques in the Asia Pacific. This mosque is named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, Omar Ali Saifuddien III, who initiated its construction and is considered as the Sultan who brought Brunei to its glorious days.
The mosque, finished in 1958, is a great example of modern Islamic architecture, which shows a mix of Mughal and Italian Renaissance architectural styles. Today it stands as a dominant icon in the city of Bandar Seri Begawan –capital of Brunei– and serves as one of its main attractions.
Bayt Al-Suhaymi ("House of Suhaymi") is an old Ottoman era house museum in Cairo, Egypt. It was originally built in 1648 by Abdel Wahab el Tablawy along the Darb al-Asfar, a very prestigious and expensive part of Medieval Cairo. In 1796 it was purchased by Sheikh Ahmed as-Suhaymi whose family held it for several subsequent generations. The Sheikh greatly extended the house from its original through incorporating neighbouring houses into its structure.

The interior of Umamayad Mosque is as beautiful as the exterior. I love the way lights are played in this interior, not just the mechanical lighting, but also the natural lightings from the outside through the stained glass.
Location : Ummayad Mosque - Damascus , Syria
Mubarak Mahal, meaning the 'Auspicious Palace', was built with a fusion of the Islamic, Rajput and European architectural styles in the late 19th century by Maharaja Madho Singh II as reception centre. It is a museum; a fine repository of variety of textiles such as the royal formal costumes, sanganeri block prints, embroidered shawls, Kashmiri pashminas and silk saris as part of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum. A noteworthy display here is of the set of voluminous clothes worn by Sawai Madhosingh I, who was 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) wide and weighed 250 kilograms (550 lb) but interestingly had 108 wives.

Known to locals as Sultanahmet Camii, the Blue Mosque is one of Istanbul's great tourism draw-cards. Built between 1609 and 1616, the mosque combines Byzantine elements with traditional Islamic architecture. Depicted here is the central dome, which is surrounded by some 28 windows.

Calligraphy Reads:
"Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil" (Holy Quran - portion of verse 62, Suratul Naml [27])
The importance of tilework in Persian architecture arises from two important factors; first the need to weatherproof the simple clay bricks used in construction, and secondly the need to ornament the buildings. Tilework is used to emphasise certain motifs and descending patterns in the domes and door arches etc. and to emphasise transitional points in the design either by providing a patterned panel or border, or by incorporating calligraphy.
Two main types of tilework developed. The mosaic tilework formed by incorporating single colour tiles into the design and the so called cuerda seca technique where a range of colours is used on individual, generally square shaped tiles. This latter form developed extensively during the 17th century, Safavid dynasty, as the quality of glazes improved and because it was significantly cheaper to produce.
The principle colours used were blue, yellow, turquoise, pink, aubergine and green. These seven colours gave rise to the name haft rang - which literally means "seven colours"
The discussion of tilework on these pages falls into the following categories. You can study them in historical order, starting with Early Brickwork, or select a particular item of interest.

I'll be rebuilding this, replacing the Sand Blue w/Sand Green and the Dark Grey with White, for use atop a structure I'm currently building. You can see how I built it out of four components - a drum/base surmounted by two more hinged rings and then a cap made of slopes, 1x3 plates (mostly), and 1x1 round bricks.

Taken after an unusually heavy summer downpour, the "Grand Mosque of Damascus" is reflected in the wet marble of the courtyard. This complex is one of the oldest and largest in the Islamic world. Originally the site of a Christian church, construction of the current mosque began in the 8th century A.D. Importantly for Christians and Muslims alike, the mosque holds a shrine said to contain the head of John the Baptist.

After waking down one of the many small picturesque cobblestone streets within the Albaicín, do you know what was one thing I couldn't get away from? Advertisements like this one from CocaCola! No visit to the south of Spain is complete until you have visited one of Andalusia’s most unique neighborhoods, the charming Arabic quarter filled with Muslim influence. The Albaicín, is located in the city of Granada, across the Darro River from the Alhambra fortress and palace. This Moorish “barrio” is just one of the many treasures of traveling through Andalusia and southern Spain.

'LUX AETERNA'
21 Nov 2013 and we've had our first rainy day in Abu Dhabi this year.
I was very excited when the rain stopped for an hour or so because I was expecting to see some spectacular cloud formations...and to my big delight, the clouds turned out to be better than expected.
This was my first, the last and the only shot I've taken at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque today. I really didn't need another one.
Tech talk: This photographs was shot on a Canon 5Dmk2 and Canon TS-E 24mm II.
The lens had to be shifted all the way up in order to get a clean composition with perfectly straight verticals. There's really NO substitute for tilt-shift lens when it comes to architecture photography.
I usually shoot HDR photographs, but today, I decided to try a muted look with more dramatic lighting effect.
I noticed how fast the clouds were moving so I chose to shoot a single, long exposure frame in order to see the motion blur of the clouds. I had two LEE ND filters on me; the Big Stopper (10-stops) and a 3-stop ND. To determine the right exposure, I first measured the light which read 1/160s at f10. 'ND Converter' app on my Nokia Lumia 1020 determined an equivalent of 51 seconds exposure with 13-stops of light reduction.
For creamy long cloud streaks, 2 minutes would've been better but 13-stops worth of ND filters was all I had on me.
I set my camera to Bulb mode, I plugged the external shutter trigger and programmed it to shoot for 56 seconds. I prefer to have a bit more light in order to avoid crushed shadows.
RAW file was exported to Photoshop as a 16-bit TIFF file. Black and white conversion was done with NIK Software Color Efex Pro 2. I've finished it in cool selenium toning which really works in this type of mood. Selective exposure control was accomplished with Viveza 2 which is one of the most amazing Photoshop plugins for serious photographers and visual artists.

A long exposure shot of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan. Since the capitol itself has not much to offer we spent a few hours around the mosque taking pictures from every corner in the late afternoon and evening.
Pilgrims to this Muslim holy place wrapped rags around this stick: a very pre-Islamic custom.
